my Pismo's gone crazy

2004-08-02 Thread W. David Stephenson
Hi. My Pis worked like a dream for 3 years until two weeks ago, on
vacation, when it developed all sorts of problems:

  * it's taken me ages to type this short message, because I'll
suddenly find myself typing in the midst of the last paragraph,
or (this is a first) in a smaller font size
  * the trackball won't work -- had to buy a mouse
  * the power cable is loose: one minute it seems I'm on AC, and the
next, I'm on reserve power.
I'm going nuts. Any ideas?

Re: Pismo booted by external Firewire drive

Will a Pismo boot OS X 10.3 from an external Firewire drive?
If so, until I can get a bigger internal drive I need to move Panther
from my iMac to this external drive. I'm getting ready to sell the
 iMac.
Brian,
Download the freeware program called "CCC" which stand for Carbon Copy
Cloner. This great utility will greatly decrease the amount of time it
will take to move Panther and everything else to your new drive. You
can this either via a firewire drive or through Target Disk Mode. CCC
can be found here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

I was under the impression that you shouldn't use CCC to move a
system BETWEEN machines - that at the deep and invisible level the OS
is hooked into a specific machine after an install and to simply move
it to another model (in this case an iMac 500 to a Pismo 400) things
may basically work but that I would be asking for trouble in the long
run.

Have I heard wrong?

Jeff, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

Did you also need to replace the cable? Did it perhaps come with the
combo?

Dan had a really good description earlier..
I originally ordered a combo upgrade from Macresq, which comes in the
proper bracket and with the proper cable. It never worked correctly for
me, as it wouldn't spit out the discs properly when it was installed in
the PB. It would work fine when bench testing, but when the Tibook case
was closed it jammed the eject. Somewhere around that time I had back
surgery, and never got things squared away with Macresq and they
finally wouldn't take the drive back. That model was a Matshita
CW-8121. So I ordered a CW-8122 and switched the bracket and cable and
now I have a faster combo drive than the Apple-supplied unit. Nice
thing is it's still listed as Apple Supported/Shipped in ASP. The end
of the story is that I put the 8121 into a Pismo carrier and it still
hung up. Turns out there was a big foam sticker on top of the drive
that was causing the problems - it squeezed the drive together when the
bottom cover was on. So now I have the faster drive in the Tibook and a
friend has a cool slot loading Pismo.

Re: Harry's Pismo

2004-08-02 Thread Alejandro
I have a Lombard, but I believe that the Pismo is the
Best PowerBook made.
It can handle TWO batteries at the same time, and one
of the bays can have a DVD-Rom, a second Hard Disc, a
Iomega Zip or Floppy (WITHOUT restarting).
And there are processor upgrades to improve
performance.

Of course, it's really COOL.

The card would work with the standard Apple AirPort drivers under OS 9 but,
alas, won't work without driver under OS X. There was an open source driver
started by a guy who ended up writing a commercial driver for IOExperts.

Zero Halliburton

2004-08-02 Thread WNK
Hello
I am new to the list.
After having had a bad experience with a soft side case I have decided
to get a Zero Halliburton hard case to protect my 15" TiPBook.

Question: Anyone else using a Zero case with their TiPBook and if so
which model and size?

The Apple Store says the following about the Zero DZ5 case they sell:
"fits the 17" PB exactly and also easily secures the 12 and 15 inch
models"

I wonder what that means "easily secure", perhaps if you jam a few
socks in the gap.

Thanks,
William

Don't worry.
The problem is because there are PDFs wich are
property of Apple so they aren't Free.
There are Apple Services wich asks $400 for a DVD
Drive which only costs $70 on a Panasonic Store (the
Same Matsushita Drive).
You shouldn't be your own Service.

Re: Wallstreet G3 will not accept Netscape 7.02

 I run a Wallstreet 233-G-3 with 96 megs of ram. I use 9.04 OK but I

to 4.79, I would trash this latest greatest version of Netscape. Just
my 2 cents. Hope the info helps.
More memoryyou need more memory. Under OS 9, 7.02 runs quite well
when you can allocate a bunch of RAM to it (like 32 megs); in all
versions of Netscape there's been a RAM threshold above which it will
become much faster and more stable.

IAC, your system at 96 megs is choked for RAM anyways.

Requesting of offering PDF manuals for take apart on list is against the

Often no care at all, in this country, unlike Europe.

Well, of course! What else can a person do?

I will say that it's very very fortunate for Jobs that he's rich. Poor
people don't do as well with cancer treatments as do rich people. That's
because they often get different levels of care.

Jobs' Carcinoma

2004-08-02 Thread K
This just came to me from the Silicon Valley.com newsletter
Steve Jobs' version of cancer: tiny market share, very user friendly:
Apple CEO Steve Jobs underwent successful surgery
 over the
weekend for a rare and treatable form of pancreatic cancer
. In an
e-mail to Apple employees, Jobs said that he will take the month of
August off to recuperate, and plans to return to work in September.
Timothy Cook
, executive
vice president for worldwide sales and operations, will handle Apple's
day-to-day operations in his absence.

FYI,

Using wireless PC card in Pismo

2004-08-02 Thread Sam
What's the trick to getting my Pismo (OS 10.3.4) to use a Lucent WaveLan
Silver PC card? Do I need to remove the internal Airport card, or do I need
a different driver?

Same WaveLan worked with stock Apple Airport software on a Pbook 3400
running OS 9.

Thanks -
Sam
