You might have to replace the top case which hoses the trackball and the
little circuit for the trackball. You might be accidentally triggering
command with the trackpad if it doesn't work properly without you knowing. I
had a similar issue with mine and had to replace that top case. Fortunately,
that part is not very expensive on eBay. I've got mine for $10.
Unfortunately, to replace the top case, you have to completely disassemble
the Pismo, which is not for the faint of heart...

As for your power problem, the solder on the AC/sound board is probably
loose and you would have to re-solder it.

 Brian,

Download the freeware program called CCC which stand for Carbon Copy
Cloner. This great utility will greatly decrease the amount of time it
will take to move Panther and everything else to your new drive. You
can this either via a firewire drive or through Target Disk Mode. CCC
 can be found here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

I was under the impression that you shouldn't use CCC to move a
system BETWEEN machines - that at the deep and invisible level the OS
is hooked into a specific machine after an install and to simply move
it to another model (in this case an iMac 500 to a Pismo 400) things
may basically work but that I would be asking for trouble in the long
 run.

Hmmm, as far as I've seen, OS X installs everything to run the OS on any
machine. For example, on my Pismo, I have all the kernel extensions for the
nVidia video cards even though my Pismo only has an ATI Rage. I haven't read
any report that the OS X installation on a machine was that machine
specific.

More memoryyou need more memory. Under OS 9, 7.02 runs quite well
when you can allocate a bunch of RAM to it (like 32 megs); in all
versions of Netscape there's been a RAM threshold above which it will
become much faster and more stable.

IAC, your system at 96 megs is choked for RAM anyways.
 Bruce;

Thanks for the input. I have tried using virtual memory with no
improvement, then went to ram doubler with some success. I have set
Netscape memory to 55 megs. Will monitor for a few days. Thanks again.

PowerBook G3 Series and Closed Lid.

2004-08-03 Thread Alejandro
I remember someone told that the PowerBook G3
(Wallstreet and Lombard) can be started with the
Display Closed from an external Keyboard.
The PowerBook may boot but it will go to sleep.
According to Apple:

Article ID: 51194

Your PowerBook G3 Series goes to sleep when you close
the display
The PowerBook's display must be open when you use an
external monitor. Unlike the PowerBook (FireWire) or
PowerBook G4, you can't use a PowerBook G3 Series
computer with the display closed.
Disconnecting an external monitor

1. Make sure your computer is shut down or in sleep.
2. Make sure your monitor is switched off.
3. Disconnect the monitor cable (for a VGA-style
monitor) or monitor adapter (for an Apple monitor)
from the external monitor port on the computer's back
panel.

This document contains information from the PowerBook
G3 Series User's Manual.

You have a Lombard wich needs a screen to work.
Well, you can place the Pismo's one.
This will be the faster solution.
Follow these steps:
http://homepage.mac.com/scadboy/lcd/
Anyway, it will be better to fix the Pismo, because
it's the only which have DVD Playback on OS X and has
a better Video Card.\
Pismo and Lombard do not have the same screens - the
flat cable
connectors on them are in about a quarter-inch
different place and so
do not match up correctly.
The screens aren't the same, but the LCD can be
replaced. Check the page and you will see that the
Pismo and the Lombard can have the same LCD (inside
the cover screen).
Apple changed some things, because they DON'T want
users replacing LCDs on NON Apple Services.
Instead of having cheaper prices, they replaced the
connectors.
Funny, isn't it?
All of these panels are compatible with PowerBook G3s
with 14.1 Displays:
- WallStreet (G3 233-292)
- PDQ (Revised Wallstreet)
- Lombard (Built-in USB)
- Pismo (Built-In Firewire)
You are correct in saying the screens are not the same, although I
think you're talking about the housings.
The actual LCD is a different part number. I have taken apart quite a
few Lombards and Pismos and can say from actual experience rather than
someone else's web page that the LCD probably won't work. The flat
connector that is part of the LCD is in a different place, so your
flex cable from the motherboard will not work correctly.
While this is true, I have a bit of experience taking apart the display
housings for this model of Powerbook. The LCD panel itself can be
swapped, just not all the various parts around it, which makes it more
difficult as the display housing is one of the more fragile and
difficult pieces to dissect.

I am currently running on the Pismo under 10.3.4 and enjoying it. The
tip given by Alejandro allowed me to reset the motherboard and get it
started. More RAM got me into OS X and boy is it night and day between
the Lombard and Pismo. :)

powerbook settings

2004-08-03 Thread workoffiction
Basically, I lost all account settings, as well as desktop files, document files,
photos in iphoto, the whole deal, and was wondering, on a powerbook g4 (12
inch DVI) what I can do to retreive it, I get errors when I try to use disk utility,
and spent 80 bucks on disk warrior, only to have it come up with an error
message as well when I try to repair the disk... weird thing is, I can still log on
to the machine as administrator, but the files seemed to have dissapeared.
this all occured after the system locked up (unusual in and of itself) any
thoughts?
