Return refurb iBook G4 12 or not?
I just got my refurbed iBook G4 1 ghz from Apple on Friday, and I love it. There's a slight problem with the screen in that the back left corner is warped a bit inward by somewhere between 1/16 and 1/8 inch. Everything appears so far to be fully functional, and in addition they sent a much larger hard drive than the one I ordered - a 55 Gig hard drive as compared to a 30 gig (by the way, what would I call that 55 gig, a 60 gig, or a 50 gig?) I'd like advice from the list if they would recommend returning the ibook or not. I know ultimately my decision should be based on whether I can live with it, and I think I can, but I'm wondering if the list thinks this is a big enough issue to mess with. Thanks! I have a 20GB external FW drive that I partitioned in 3 partitions for my development purposes. One is for 10.2, one contains a backup of my PowerBook startup partition (made with Carbon Copy Cloner) and the 3rd one is for Tiger. So, I can switch system on my PowerBook for development testing. However, if you plan, for example, to do video editing, then it would be a good idea to keep at least one big partition because digital video consumes 3.6MB per second of footage. Powerbook G4 CD/DVD and discs stuck at insertion
Lately a few times I'm inserting a disc in to the CD/DVD drive (the MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8187) of my PB G4 / 400 and it gets stuck just about midway. If this happens and if I try to remove the disc to reinsert it, it gets scratched as the insertor arms must have got their hands onto the disc before it gets stuck. This have rendered 2 discs unusable. After removal the drive clams and make some noises as it tries to spin up the non existing disc. The problem seem to be able to fix itself, but can reappear later. The area just right of the trackpad seem unusally giving and if I press there with a disc in the drive I can hear the disc getting touched. A 550 I have here also is much stiffer and it isn't possible to affect the spinning disc by pressing down. I need some suggestions what to look for if I remove drive to inspect it. I suppose the softness of the cover can be related, but I haven't seen anything obvious missing inside or being misaligned in order to cause this. That doesn't mean it's not there and I have a hard time accepting this softness and occasional insertion problems. Any suggestions and ideas to find the cause of this problem are welcome. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OS X startup problems for Lombard
Howdee, I am having a problem with my Lombard 400mhz with OS 10.2. Two weeks ago, I took a HD out of a gussed-up Wallstreet (500mhz) that had OS 10.2, my 1st foray into OS X. Anyway, it has worked well until this evening. Now, when I try to start the laptop, it shows the white screen w/ the black apple, and the twirly thing at the bottom. ...and it just twilrs and twirls. The only way I can boot the machine at all is to use my OS 9 cd-rom; when I do, and go to the Startup Disk control panel on the HD, I can only choose the OSX startup, as I do not see one for OS9. try booting holding the command and the v key so that you can boot in verbose mode this will allow you to see what it's doing at start up line by line .. like the unix machine that it now is -- Robert AOL IM wingnut022074 To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them. There are some problems with the hard disk, methinks. If you have the OS X installation CD, try to boot from that CD. When you're in the installer, there should be an option in the Apple or File menu to launch Disk Utility.
