AlBook vs. TiBook :o/
At my previous job I managed to get my way and get an TiBook 550 and I was both impressed and happy with it. I subsequently changed jobs to another non-Mac company and have yet again managed to get a Mac as my computer, an AlBook 1GHz. Re: Powerlogix 466mhz WS upgrade question
Greeting: A friend of mine has a 466mhz Powerlogix Wallstreet processor, but he cannot properly identify what series of WS machine it came out of. Is that important to know? I had heard that they're two different processors for the two series. I tried looking up the info online but cannot seem to find much... It shouldn't be a big deal. The CPU card has an EEPROM with the Mac OS ROM in it - the ROM is different depending on which generation of Wallstreet you've got. Fortunately, that doesn't matter to you. Before you install the upgrade, run the PowerLogix utility on the CD that came with the upgrade (it did come with the upgrade, didn't it? If not, email me privately and I'll hook you up with it). The utility copies the Mac OS ROM from your original CPU daughter card to your hard drive, then tweaks the OpenFirmware somehow (probably installs an OF script or something). Anyway, after you've done that, install the upgrade. When you boot the Wallstreet, the upgrade will see that there's a copy of the Mac OS ROM on the hard drive for it to copy into it's EEPROM. It updates it's flashable ROM with the new copy of the Mac OS ROM, then continues to boot. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE ORIGINAL CPU in case you ever have trouble with the upgrade. You'll need it for some troubleshooting. PowerLogix shows a nice little video of the firmware doing it's thing on the CD-ROM. My WS didn't do that when I upgraded w/ a 466MHz CPU - the screen stayed blank for a while (a little longer than it normally does after a cold boot), then it booted right up. I've since had some difficulty, though, and the PowerBook doesn't boot at the moment (worked great for about a month). I've heard that sometimes the image in the EEPROM can become corrupt, so I'll try fixing that first... But that's kind of a pain as it involves swapping CPUs, etc. Peace, Drew -- Author of ClassicStumbler email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] web: http://www.alksoft.com/ Visit the PowerBook 5300 FAQ! http://www.alksoft.com/5300_FAQ/ -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Looking over the page at http://www.kodawarisan.com/PowerBook/17.html shows the heat pads that those chips physically touch - black/orange for the G4, blue for the black chip, and green for the ATI controller. they're connected to a metal band that transfers heat to the two blowers either side of the case. iBooks are a little similar, but they use chunkier looking heat pipes to drag heat to the single fan at the back of the case :). Fonts in Mac OS X ???
Font management programs will allow you to access and utilize os 9 fonts as a seperate set or as an incorporated set. Not sure if Panther's fontbook will do the job, but font reserve certainly does, and no need to keep a classic machine online just for old fonts! :) Run Subject: Re: Fonts in Mac OS X ??? Apple could have easily fixed these problems on my 17 AlBook by doing one of two things: A) Putting a docking port of some sort in the notebook so that either they, or 3rd party companies could sell a docking station like most of the PC laptop manufacturers do. I can most assuredly state that had a docking station been available when I bought my 17 Powerbook, I would have bought one with the notebook. Hell, I would have taken a single port that breaks out into a box like some of the older Sony notebooks have. :) B) Moving at least one of the firewire ports to the LH side of the notebook. They managed to get a usb port on each side of the machine, why not a firewire port as well? I'm sure it has something to do with only having one firewire bus or something like that. I recently took my Macintosh Powerbook G3 (Lombard, 333 MHz, with 384 RAM and 40 GB hard drive) in for repair after seeing this message for the first time and experiencing random crashes and freezes: The built-in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory. Please contact a service technician for assistance. I defer to experts here. I suspect the diagnostic points to your 512 KB Level 2 cache which sits on the motherboard to temporarily hold data that may be quickly needed by the processor. The fix-it shop ran various diagnostic texts, but didn't find a memory or hardware problem. What tools did they use? TechToolsPro? This has a test for the L1 and L2 caches. They told me that I had installed OSX (Panther) on the wrong partition. (By way of explanation, most of the time I still use 9.2.2, since all my music software is pre-Panther, but I've had OSX installed on a second partition for some time now, anticipating a future move up to it.) So, I paid their standard $50 servicing charge, grateful for the advice, and brought my Mac home. Now, after backing up all my files onto another computer, I'm surprised to discover that the partitioning scheme I had been using appears fine. In other words, in the Drive Setup custom setup screen, the Panther partition (7939 MB) sits on top of the 9.2.2 Powerbook partition (29,958 MB). I wonder if perhaps the partition on the bottom is really the one I need to re-install Panther on? If not, I wonder if I've received dubious or random advice? Could be if they were thinking you have an 8 GB, first partition limit on your Lombard. Or they may be thinking that your OS X does not have enough head room to work. How much free space do you have in that volume? I would not feel comfortable with less than 2 or 3 GB. In looking through the Drive Setup documentation, I find no mention of any partition taking priority as the first or the top partition; I've always assumed that the Startup Disk control panel in 9.2.2 dictates priority. If you have Systems installed on more than one partition, Startup Disk will select the volume/partition. I don't see this as a priority, just a selection. I do intend to give the Panther partition more space than the 8 GB it's had up until now, but I still don't know whether to install Panther on the bottom or top partition. I've been told it matters, but I'm confused. The Lombard is not the same as the PowerBook G3 Series which requires that the OS X be installed on the first partition no larger than 8 GB. When you first installed OS X, my may have been confused by the ReadBeforeYouInstall text in the section about hardware compatibility. -- Al Poulin Anger, hate, and revenge are for the devil, forgiveness is for God, proactive self-defense is for the rest of us. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: dvd burner
I would guess that rendering a video DVD on a 300mhz iBook would take overnight---but that's OK. The real issue will be disk space and RAM. I will comment that even on my 1Ghz AlBook, with a gig of RAM, and the new compressor from the latest version of iMovie, I am easily in the multiple hours of time to render a dvd, and that's with Altivec. I cannot imagine rendering anything on a 300Mhz G3. Steve A:I meant, overnight in Nome in January. -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: AlBook vs. TiBook :o/
I just got a new 1.33 Gig Albook to replace my 550 TiBook. (Obviously, mine is a whole generation above the 1.Gig, since they stopped making the 1Gig family 5 months ago.) I have to say that every single aspect of the machine is better than the TiBook. It is really, REALLY, really more solid and rigid--particularly the screen hinge and the screen frame. The screen hinge drops down in the back so the screen is even lower than the Tibook which was the lowest in the world.thus the ports have to go on the side. I never have to turn the screen up all the way except when outdoors. Right now i am in my normally lit living room and it is on at 40%. I usually have it at about 70% under the fluorescents at the office. The built-in airport reception is almost as good as the external card I had in my old machine (which worked out in the yard 300 feet--I am using 802.11b not g). Oddly enough, a system upgrade a couple of weeks ago dramatically improved airport reception. It matters which way you turn the machine tho. If the screen still touches the keyboard, it is really light because there is a clear offset in the frame. I like the keyboard a lot more--I think it feels crisper. ( learned on a manual underwood). The trackpad button is clearly harder. Battery life is good, but I haven't worked with it a lot--on my old Tibook I could sometimes get WELL OVER 8 hours if I turned the monitor down and worked only in Word.I doubt I could get that kind of life with this battery--but I never have to turn the monitor up all the way and that is the key battery life sapper when doing only wordprocessing. the disk drive in my original TiBook 550 was worse than garbage. Applecare replaced it with a really nice drive, but nowhere near as nice as the drive in this AlBook. Yes it ejects violently--I want it too. I can't figure out why you have a problem with graphic table wires because I have a USB port on each side. The speakers are bigger and better. I wish the 60 Gig drive was bigger and faster than 4200, but the TiBook was only 20 gig travelstar and whatever RPM it was, was really really slow compared to the 40 Gig travelstar I put in it. As for sensitivity to scraping, my Ti-Book was so black from peeling paint where my palms rested, Applecare replaced that part of my frame (without me even asking--wow). I have dirt on my Albook but no scrapes. My old Tibook was dented and so forth--particularly the screen frame which was sort of flimsy. This new AlBook is really a lot more solid--particularly the screen. I can't overemphasize how much more solid and rigid it is than the old Tibook. I feel much more secure with this computer. The Apple is right-side-up when you open the case. I thought that the old Tibook would be with me forever, but this new computer is really much more solid physically--Oh and you know, it's a little faster too ; ) -- it really feels smooth with no hanging. I hate it when things hang. You can't believe how fast Quickdex runs on this thing. -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... No Torbjørn, it's not just you. g I own the same PowerBook and mine is noisier, too. It's because of the fan, which comes on at a lower internal temperature under Panther than it did under Jaguar. Guess Apple figured the little 'Books were running too hot and decided to cool things down a bit. John -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
