According to the Apple service manual, you should try (in this order):
* Resetting the power manager (fn-shift-power)
* Using the battery in the opposite expansion bay
* Replacing the charge card
* Replacing the PMU
* Replacing the power card
So, if you haven't done the first 3 steps, there's little point in
replacing the PMU or the DC board
Thanks for the response, Ben. My apologies for being so slow to
respond. It's the holiday season, and those of us in retail are
getting a bit busy! As for the Wallstreet, I've definitely tried the
first 3 steps several times first. The first two were easy and cheap.
Is the DC board integrated into the sound card?

In an (supposedly) unrelated issue, when I boot up (OS X.2.8), my
screen is blacked out all the way to the log in page. When I hit the
brightness button above the keyboard, everything is fine. Odd, but
it's not like I can't work around it. However, if I try to boot from
the CD, the screen is also black, (I can almost make everything out,
but not quite), but the brightness button doesn't help. in other
words, I can't repair disks etc. reset logins, etc. from my boot CD.
Strange, yes? Anybody encounter this before?
This is a known issue with the Wallstreet under Jaguar. To fix this
problem:
* Restart into MacOS 9
* Put the Wallstreet to sleep
* Wake it up again
* Restart into Jaguar
I tried this and it seemed to help. I need to take care of the battery
issue and hopefully this will resolve itself.

Thanks, again, for your input, Ben. This has been a real test of
patience.

Yes, it is. If you already replaced it with the PMU, then I have no idea of
what is wrong. Have you been able to try a different battery or have your
battery in a different Wallstreet?

Lombard Recommendations

2004-12-08 Thread Andrew
Hello all.

I just bought a used 333MHz Lombard for my daughter to
use, mostly at home, along with a new Orinoco Gold
card to access the Airport network.

First off, will the Orinoco card (Proxim - brand new)
work as an actual airport card, or should I start
hunting for drivers?

Second, the Lombard has a 20GB drive and 512MB of RAM,
what would be the best OS for this machine? My plan
is to just put Panther on it, but am worried about it
being too slow. Should I stick to OS 9? It will
mainly be used for doing elementary school research
(web) and writing in Word. I have Office 2001 and
Office 2004, so can go either OS 9 or OS X on this.

Finally, any tips for making a Lombard speedier (or at
least less slow) under Panther? Settings for video or
other things, rather than actual hardware upgrades
would be appreciated. I'm not looking at making this
thing into a speed demon, just want adequate web
browsing and good application performance for writing
and very light graphics (clip art and jpegs in word
docs). Knowing kids, it will probably also be used
for web-based game play (she's addicted to Neopets).

I paid $350 for the Lombard including the CD drive and
two supposedly good batteries.

Yes, indeed, a pet peeve of mine. The mactracker program does helps
solve such questions as:

Q) Does a G3 Powerbook have one or two Cardbus slots?
A) Yes
And:
Q) Does an iMac have a VGA port?
A) Maybe!
Mac has perfected the Detroit technique. I recall the Dodge Charger
started out as a host-to-gosh Muscle Car, and before it dies, it
became a 4 cyc imported econbox, but it's STILL a Charger, right???

Re: DV editing and dvd burning realistic on a Pismo?

2004-12-08 Thread Dan K
Forget encoding and burning with iDVD on anything G3, even if technically
possible it'll be sloow as molassass in the Yukon in January. However, a
Pismo is quite capable of capturing and editing DV video using iMovie. If
more editing power is needed, FC Express is a mere $300 or so, quite a
bargain relative to its high-priced FCPro sibling.

I'll suggest encoding and burning DVDs with the ADS Instant DVD USB
hardware video capture device and its bundled SW:
http://adstech.com/products/macav1750/intro/macav1750intro.asp?pid=MACAV17
50

available here for a mere US$129:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=5448Item=ADSMACAV1750

It does a splendid job of encoding video to the standard DVD codec and
does so in real time, with better results than achieved using Apple's
codecs as well. It includes a very satisfactory (X only) DVD authoring
application, CaptDVD, and it supports both external and internal DVD
burners.

For me, workflow goes (roughly) like this:

DV cam tape (FW DV) - Mac (FW) - capture/edit/print (iMovie, FCE, FCP,
etc.) - Mac (FW) - DV cam tape (FW) - DV cam tape (analog) - Instant
DVD USB - Mac (USB) - CaptDVD - DVD burner

Biggest concern voiced by folks who haven't used it is the worry that USB
1 isn't fast enough to handle video of sufficient quality. I can attest
(from personal experience) the resulting quality can easily exceed that
produced by an all digital workflow (eg: FCExpress - iDVD), primarily
because Apple's built-in codecs aren't very good. You can buy a better
codec (product's name escapes me just now) but straight out the box
Instant DVD USB does a superior job.

Just to clear up a point, have you replaced the charge card? That's the
long, thin board attached to the 'handle' part of the logic board,
where the batteries connect. The DC board and sound card are the same
part, and the PMU is the flat board attached to the upper case under
the left palmrest.

Re: DV editing and dvd burning realistic on a Pismo?

So do people think that my G4 500 pismo with 1 gig of ram should work?

Or should I look for a TI book?

It will be slow. I did burn DVDs with a Blue White upgraded with a G4 at
500MHz and would have to let it run all night long for the burn to complete.
I haven't tried my 17 yet at 1.5GHz to see the difference...

Just to clear up a point, have you replaced the charge card? That's the
long, thin board attached to the 'handle' part of the logic board,
where the batteries connect. The DC board and sound card are the same
part, and the PMU is the flat board attached to the upper case under
 the left palmrest.

I believe that the charge card you're referring to is also called the
Power Management Unit (or PMU) and he initially said that this board has
been replaced. Unless he got another defective PMU (which would always be
possible), the problem might be somewhere else...

No, the charge card (according to the Apple service manual on this
model...) is an entirely separate board, located above the handle-like
protruding section of the logic board. It's the first part Apple
recommends replacing when solving this type of issue.

Re: Re.: All in one printer for Pismo?

2004-12-08 Thread Kristina Rost
In looking at possibilities for printers, I must consider, along with
quality of print from digital images, the cost of the cartridges. I will
look at these suggestions wit the idea to compile a list of compatible
printers; do some research for cost factors as well as quality output and
then negotiate with my banker uh after christmastime.
