Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?
Thanks for your response! The actual data I was looking for were the mail folders, messages, rules, etc, which I finally found in the Documents folder. I wasn't interested in any other program or user settings/data from the old Powerbook. I'm good to go now, though. All I did was install Office 2004 on the new iBook, turn on file sharing on the old Powerbook, then import all the data I wanted into Entourage 2004 by selecting the data files on the Powerbook over the network. It worked great! I then imported the same data from Entourage into Apple Mail, just so my wife can use both programs and eventually go with whichever one she likes best. Thank all of you for your help! The iBook is now loaded, configured, and ready to go for my wife's birthday this Friday! (Yep, she's a New Year's baby!) Actually, I'm having some issues with the Airport Extreme card and integration with Active Directory, but both are minor issues that I may bring up in other topic discussions. Thanks again, and Happy New Year!! Mike Otherwise, there's got to be some way to export the data from the Powerbook to the iBook first? I found some scripts written by a gentleman name Paul Berkowitz that will perform this export/import for $20. data? If you're talking about email, I think all you need with entourage is dragging the folders to the desktop, which will create a unix mailbox (I think). These will import into Entourage nicely, I'm pretty sure. I don't know what files in OS 9.2 contain the data I need to export. What *is* the data? There are lots of info that you may need, like login and passwords. Make a list of what you can think of, with details of your terms for it, in what app you use the data. I think you should *backup* all the data and keep the old machine intact for a while in case you forget something, but don't worry about where it is for now. Try and remember first what you need to bring. Most OS 9 prefs and so on, won't be exportable and you need to set them anew in your OS X apps. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Thanks! This /is /an excellent article! Mike Apple has an excellent technical article on moving data from old to new Macs. USB wireless adaptors
I am planning to by a USB wireless adaptor for my iBook (500 Mhz, dual USB, 10.2.8). Will any adaptor work or do I have to get one that specifically works for the Mac? I was in the store and they had an D-Link 802.11b adaptor that says it works on a Mac for $55 CND and a SMC 802.11b/g adaptor for $28 CND (product # and websites below). I know I can't use g speeds on the iBook but the SMC adaptor is cheaper and might be nice to have for future computer upgrades. asking again re: pismo suddenly won't work with RAM in bottom slot
Hi folks, I sent this question in a couple of weeks ago and got no replies, so I'm checking again: anyone care to venture an opinion on this? Our story so far: My partner's trusty Pismo 400 malfunctioned. When it gave the 3 beeps on startup and nothing else, I looked that up and read that it meant no RAM that was recognized was present. This Pismo has 2 256 Mb RAM chips, that have been working in it without any problem for about 2 years until this happened. After a whole lot of disassembly and reassembly I have established that: either RAM chip works in the top slot; both RAM chips have passed the test on the Apple hardware test CD when installed in the top slot; either RAM chip in the bottom slot causes the Pismo not to boot (even to the test CD), whether or not there is a chip in the top slot. So: what would cause this, and what is the best thing to do about it? Does this mean the logic board is going? Does this problem presage other problems to come? There also seems to be new static in the right speaker. Currently we are running the Pismo successfully with one of the 256 RAM chips in the top slot. Wallstreet queries
Hello, I have just acquired a Wallstreet (292 mhz, 64 mb ram, 5 GB hd with OS 9.1) which has a yellow tinge along the bottom of the screen for about half an inch. Is there a cure, besides a new screen? Also, the Re-set of: Shift, Control, FN and Power does not work and I have had to pull the plug out to shut it off after it froze. Are there other suggestions for a way to shut it off? Thanks. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The family member using the machine said that the condition developed gradually. I expect to receive a replacement battery next week, and hope that might clear up the problem. If not, what component would cause such a condition? It's probably hardware related, but just for the heck of it, I'd like to suggest trying a lil' experiment. Reset the nvram . . . Startup into openfirmware by holding down key combo cmd-opt-O-F right after startup. at prompt type reset-nvram (without quotes of course, and then enter) it'll say OK reset-all (and enter) and it'll restart Dunno if it'll make any difference, but I've read several reports of an nvram reset curing a pink tint on Lombard PBs and I'm wondering if this might work on iBook. Also, the nvram reset may help the battery. Probably not, but worth a try. No, none of these steps helped the red problem. PowerBook Guy tells me it is more likely a bad LCD or LCD cable. The LCD had been replaced by Wegener media a couple of years ago. Furthermore, the too-good-to-be-true cheap battery I bought as-is turned out to be just as dead as the original battery (don't bother buying any of those $5 batteries listed by bobsbid1 on eBay). -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... HotRod ing Wallstreet
I'm getting to appreciate the Wallstreet II OS 9.1 and some of the upgrade options. It occurs to me that upgrading really needs to be guided by what what wants to do. Basically, my 3400 is find for almost everything I want to do, except receiving real time video streaming via RealPlayer. My church broadcasts regularly and the Wallstreet is way better for this. So, I'm wondering if there are specific suggestions for upgrading the key elements that will enhance this function. The motherboard upgrade? More RAM? Re: Another wireless question
Any router will work. The ones sold by PC networking companies are usually configured through a web browser as opposed to Apple's AirPort utility, but once set up, 802.1 is 802.1, though of course speed varies by which protocol you use. Less is more or Bigger is better
I¹ve been on this list for about a year now (since I switched back from 6 years of Wintel and bought my 12² G4) and in that time have always wondered what was up with everyone who is so into their Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo PowerBooks. Now I¹m still a big fan of the ³less is more² approach to laptops, but I must admit that I¹m starting to see the appeal in the larger books. It started a about 6-weeks-ago when on a whim I bought a Lombard off eBay to satisfy my daughter¹s desire for a laptop of her own. Well I configured the 333MHz machine with OSX Panther and OS9 and found that it was quite an enjoyable machine to work on. Much slower than the G4 and rather unstable, but still enjoyable. I traced the stability problems to the upper 256MB ram module and sent it back to OWC last week, with the replacement due any day now. Running on only the lower 256MB module the Lombard is rock solid, and unless I launch more than three or four programs it remains fast enough for general office-type work. This is where things got a bit strange. I am currently studying for the California bar exam and keep my study folder with all of my outlines and what not on our desktop PowerMac G4 (400MHz Sawtooth, also running Panther rather well), which is nice because I like to write and study from my living room recliner, and when the batteries on my 12² G4 run down, rather than plugging it in, I just save my work and resume where I left off on the Lombard. My wife saw this a few times and then looked over my shoulder and noticed the large text and overall clarity of the Lombard display, and proclaimed that as soon as I finish the exam, the Lombard is hers. Okay, so back to eBay I go to find another computer for my daughter. I watched both the ending soon and newly listed views for G3 PowerBooks and came upon a loaded 400MHz Pismo, which is now sitting on my lap as I write on its like-new bronze keyboard. About an hour after buying the Pismo on eBay, I saw a listing on the LEM Swap list for a Kanga at $150 shipped, so more out of curiosity than anything I bought that too, thinking if either the Pismo or the Kanga arrive in clean cosmetic condition I will make that my daughter¹s machine (she is 10 and will use mostly edutainment software in OS9) and keep the ugly one for myself. What is really amazing is that I got all three computers, a pair of old Orinoco pc cards for the Lombard and Kanga (the Pismo already had an AirPort card) and a total of three working AC adapters (all compatible with all three computers) and four excellent batteries (1 Kanga, 3 Lombard/Pismo) for less than the cheapest new iBook over at my local Apple Store. The Lombard is the only one that shows any signs of wear, though because its CD ROM drive and keyboard are a bit quieter than the DVD and keyboard of the Pismo, it is still my wife¹s choice of computer. The Pismo is a nice backup to my G4, and for long hours studying, is actually a far better computer than the newer aluminum machine. With the two best batteries installed I get a whopping 7 hours runtime (the other good battery can hot-swap in for an additional 2:45) and that 14² TFT is much easier on the eyes for long sessions than the 12² panel on my G4. There is also something just friendlier about the black PowerBooks with their bronze keyboards, and of course the ergonomics are far superior. About the only downside compared to the G4 is that the keyboard isn¹t as crisp, though its much better than I thought it would be. Actually even the old Kanga is a delight. Running OS8.6 (until I get more ram for OS9) is extremely fast, and that is with the paltry 32MB of ram that it came with. 9.1 should fly after I add 64 or 128MB of ram, and who knows, maybe I¹ll give XPostFacto a try (if I get the 128MB module) and try to run Panther on it. So, I guess what I¹m trying to say is that while I won¹t be taking this like-new Pismo with me when I fly, I can see myself really putting a lot of mileage on its keyboard in the years to come. These older PowerBooks really are great examples of superior design, and I can see why you guys like them so much. But when lugging it across airports and trying to use in a crowded coach-class seat, less is definitely more. Andrew On 12/29/04 9:38 PM, Jim Dynes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No No No!! Modules, even batteries, if using AC, can be inserted and removed while the machine is live. Also, will I need to shut down to add or remove external keyboard or mouse? Hmm. Not sure of the official advice, but the ADB and serial ports on other Macs generally carry the warning to shut down before connecting or disconnecting. Ken P.S. Just checked the User Manual. No mention of turning off for Printers. Shut down of sleep for modems. WARNING When connecting SCSI equipment, always turn off power to all devices in the chain, including your computer. If you don¹t, you could lose information and damage your equipment. IMPORTANT You must shut down the computer or put it in sleep before connecting an ADB device.
