Tiger Launch

2005-01-21 Thread John Michael Feeney
Regarding the ease of starting programs under the
Apple icon in OS 9, you can have a similar set-up in
OS X by using the free application, Tiger Launch. I
have been using it for a while on my Ti Book. It's
really nice. Link:

Re: Setting up a prev. owned iBook Was: Re: Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice

2005-01-21 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi,
I don`t think any of the music is from the Apple Store...
Aase :)
If thats the law there, then thats the law there, and perhaps the
music isnt from the Apple store at all, in which case any agreement
with Apple would not exist... As for Tikkun Olam, its a term that
has been used and abused for decades to justify all sorts of
behavior that has nothing to do with actual Tikkun Olam. I havent
read fully through every post on this, so if I missed where it said
it was ALL from the Itunes store, then I apologize for butting in.

Re: iTunes in Norway on iBook from Denmark (Was: Setting up a prev. owned iBook)

2005-01-21 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Al, or maybe it was Bruce?
HmmmI think my overactive track pad ate the quotation of the
previous post... I had to save the mail yesterday, as I had problems
with my ISP and couldn`t get on line...

BTW, I didn`t buy the iBook in Denmark. I bought it in here in
Norway. I considered buying one in Denmark, but then I found an ad
for this online, and found out that the guy lives in my home town and
was here at the moment even if he is a student abroad (that is why he
had one with an International keyboard).

Shoot, I type too fast, so now the track pad ate a whole paragraph,
but I reacted too late to undo it... I have no problems accessing the
music at all, I just have to be logged into his account. I am
enjoying it a lot!!! I can`t wait to get more music loaded onto it,
all I have then I can add some now and then. I really can`t wait to
get the airport express base, so I can get it connected to my stereo
too. For now I am borrowing two USB loudspeakers. I will just have to
move all the music to a different folder and store it on an external
HDD while I re-install system X so I am sure to get rid of all signs
of french language and such which I can`t seem to get rid of. That
is the main problem. Since the iBook now is mine, I would like to
have only my own account and delete his. I could of course just have
kept his and used that as the main account, but... I might have done
that if the french language windows didn`t keep popping up, he used
french on it since he is bilingual. It will be wonderful to get the
right keyboard also, but it sure cost enough, it ended out being
around $175. Does not make too much sense as you can get one on eBay
for around $20, but of course there is no Norwegian ones there. I
could not find a used one and as Apple told me you could not get
these, if it broke you would have to buy a new computer (!!!), I was
real eager to just get it ordered and get it in place. I must admit
that I got a bit nervous for a while. I think that I will write a
formal complaint to Apple about the misinformation by one of their
employees though. I think it is one thing that a person make a
mistake, but I told her that I knew for a fact that it was not
correct, but she would not listen at all. She just seemed to get
more and more stubborn as I explained how I had checked this issue
before buying this computer, that I had an offer to buy one from a
different company etc. That kind of customer service I really do not
think is good enough. If I had believed her, she could have cost me a
lot of money, I would have given up this computer, as I really depend
on a Norwegian keyboard.

Oh well... The only thing I have a tough time with, is the track pad.
I hope I find a way to deal with that. When I get the airport
express, things will be as close to perfect as they possibly can. I
would love it if I could use the TV as a second screen, and know I
read about some gadget you can use, but I can`t seem to find back to
the information...

Poor Apple Service Was: Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-21 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Larry,
Yes, you can really wonder. I have made notes, I have the exact time
for the call etc. and I really want to send a complaint to Apple.
Have no idea where to send it to though, and to who there I should
address it. I mean, if I had trusted her, I most likely would have
given up this computer, I would have had to sell it again. I could
have lost a lot of money on the whole thing. Now I have a keyboard on
the way, they mailed me and said they had received it and sent it on
to me with the airport express base...

We are all humans, and I do not have any problems with a person
making an error, if they just are a bit humble. When you tell them in
a nice way that you know for a fact that what she is saying is
incorrect, that you have checked this before and that you already got
an offer for one from a different company - and she still will not
give in or at least check the issue over again That is when I got
really annoyed and I told her that I was really unhappy with the
level of the service she was giving, that I thought it was really
poor...

She deserves to get a clear message from her superiors that this is
not good enough, and I would not mind a written reply to a
complaint... :)

Aase :)
Anyway, maybe contacting Apple would be a better idea (Maybe they had a
dead iBook to pull one from)?. I not only didn`t get any help there, the
lady flat out gave me incorrect information. She told me that it was not
possible to change the keyboard, and no way would she listen to me. When
I asked her What if a person`s keyboard breaks?, she told me that if
that was the case, the person would have to buy a new computer.
Sometimes one wonders how some people retain their jobs...

You can set it so that the trackpad is inactive while you're typing, in
the trackpad control pane.

Re: iTunes in Norway on iBook from Denmark (Was: Setting up a prev. owned iBook)

2005-01-21 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Bruce,
I would love it if that was possible, but I cannot find any such
option in that control panel. There is a box you can check so it
supposedly should ignore it if you hit the track pad by accident, but
that option is checked, and it still happens all the time. If I could
only get it to not work when I am actively typing, that would be just
great. I never had this problem with any of the other track pads... A
lot of the times when it happens, I really can`t understand that I
even touched it. I have my hand over it, but that is something else.
I am wondering if I have to cover it with something, so that it won`t
be activated just because my hands are warm and just over it...

OSX vs OS9

2005-01-21 Thread Frank Cornew
Noted someone commenting about how it felt returning to OS9.x on a
Kanga. Its taken me about a year to get accustomed to OSX after
holding out and hanging on to OS9 for maybe a bit too long.

Only things I miss are: Find by Content searching (still haven't got
it to index the whole drive on the Pismo. This will probably take an
absolutely clean reinstalling of the OS to straighten out.)

More importantly, I vaguely remember that OS9 used to report the
number of files and total size of the trash contents in the empty
trash confirmation dialog under OS9. Furthermore, Copy Agent (last
useful scraps of Speed Doubler) used to report the specific files in
the trash in the empty dialog under OS9. It may have even permitted
selection of the files to be deleted or that may have been yet
another add-on for my OS9 systems.

Anything similar for OSX? Standard trash empty dialog says nothing
about the trash contents.
