Re: pine wood derby

2005-02-20 Thread Richard Smykla
Michael Sharon,
I just became aware of an application that might help you manage your
derby. The developers are French, but here's a roughly translated
(via Google) version of the web page with some screenshots:

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.racecontrol-timing.com%2Ffr%2Fxcross%2Findex.htmllangpair=fr%7Cenhl=enie=UTF-8oe=UTF-8prev=%2Flanguage_tools
Looks interesting, and there's a downloadable demo. They indicate
they'll have an English version of the page soon.

HTH,
Rick
has any one used there macs to run a Pine Wood Derby or have you
seen any software for Macs to run a Pine Wood Derby

take apart: which powerbook?

2005-02-20 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
I have taken apart all Apple PowerBook, from the 100 series (my 180c
probably more than 100 times) to the Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismos
including iBooks. The 190 has become a 190cs, then a 5300c and
finally a 5300ce: from a close exam you cannot really tell it has
been taken apart probably once a week in the last year!

If you play in a clean environment and try to concentrate on your
hobby (or work) it is almost impossible to tell if a given PowerBook
has been taken apart.

This is not true for the Titanium and the Aluminium.
Their cases bend too easily.
Okay, computers, especially PowerBooks, are not built to be taken
apart but I think Apple should consider this.

Not to mention that while I can put my iBook G4 straight into the
Jansport back pack, the Aluminium requires the Radthech folder a
neoprene case ***and*** the specific laptop backpack.

I now need a 17 PowerBook and I whish Apple made a 17 iBook.
I would appreciate to hear your opinion on this topic.

Re: Wallstreet Battery

2005-02-20 Thread Kenneth Vann
A final update regarding my quest for a working battery:

APC Returned my phone call, and is sending out a replacement battery.
They are paying the shipping cost both ways.

APC provided replacement battery 3 days after that phone call. It Charged
up the first time I tried it. I am now going to do a calibration and see
how much time it will last.

Eagle Imports agreed to send replacement battery. Will pick up the
original battery that tested dead. Will pay for shipping cost for both
batteries. I am waiting on replacement to test. If replacement battery
does not work, they have agreed to take it back, pay the freight cost,
and not charge a restocking fee. Eagle Imports believes that one or more
cells in battery is dead.

I Received a pre paid mailer to send defective battery back to Eagle
Imports. Replacement battery arrived 4 days after I mailed first one back.
After charging and calibration it last about 2 1/2 hours with all energy
savings turned off, and playing a QuickTime movie looping continuously.
Quite acceptable. I want to note that Eagle Imports honored their terms of
sale after I was able to establish communication with them. The
communication problems stem from Quest Telephone Co, and a move of their
business at the same time I placed the order on their web site.

In earlier conversion with Other World Computing about their brand of
batteries, they advised me that the charge card in the Wallstreet could be
week, ie: not strong enough, to handle the larger capacity batteries.
As both batteries have charged up ok, this does not seem to be a problem.

Also both batteries test good in the VST external charger. Both batteries
are a larger capacity than the Apple origional battery, it seems the VST
charger is not calibrated for that, and charges them up to when three of
the lights on the fuel gauge are lit. At that point, the VST Charger
indicates a full charge by giving a Green Light. Perhaps If I left them in
the charger overnight, they will go to full charge. I have not tried that
yet.

Both charge up fully in the Wallstreet without problem.

In the end, it appears I have received 2 bad batteries in my quest for
replacements. I now have two good batteries.

Thanks for all the suggestions I have received from you.

Ken Vann

Memory - from iMac G4 to AlBook ?

2005-02-20 Thread Larry le Mac
It seems to be the same, but is the SoDIMM from a G4 iMac 1GHz,
i.e. the second edition with PC2700 333MHz RAM the same as the
current version of AlBooks ?
Apple refers to the RAM in the iMac as PC2700, but they seem to
be talking about the non-user changeable 168-pin DIMM and not
the user-upgradeable SoDIMM, but surely they are the same speeds ?!
Basicaly I have the SoDIMM from the iMac G4 1GHz that I sold,
and I will probably be getting the 15 AlBook which has one spare slot,
so why not use it there ?!...

Re: take apart: which powerbook?

2005-02-20 Thread Andrew
Ability to take apart is big selling point for IBM ThinkPads, Panasonic
Toughbooks
and Toshiba Tecras, at least in the old days (don't know about the new ones).
For
example, to remove the hard drive from most IBMs, it only takes one screw that
is
sized and shaped to remove with a coin.

Apple has the right idea with the memory and airport cards being easily
accessible,
but 30+ screws and an engineering degree should not be required to swap out a
hard
drive. I know, because I had to pay $80 to have an Apple tech do it for my 12
PB
last year. At least the new ones all come with humungous and fast drives.
