Re: Back up when traveling
On 2/26/05 6:41 AM, Peter Saint James [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm assessing back-up strategies to use while doing some extended traveling. It seems that a portable external hard drive might be better than trying to carry a stack of DVDs. Or is there a better solution? One issue I'm weighing is stability. I can picture being momentarily careless and getting the hard drive too close to a magnet or something. Is this really an issue? I've tried several solutions and I'm convinced that having backups while traveling will prevent disaster from occurring in the first place grin The only time disaster ever struck while traveling with a PowerBook was when I didn't have any backups with me. Unless you are going to carry an iPod sized external drive that is powered via firewire you are adding significant weight and bulk to your suitcase. You are also almost certainly guaranteeing your suitecase will be hand searched and a small drive may prove tempting to the searcher - as might other valuables once the case is open. Thus speaks a traveler who just recently settled a theft claim from a June 2004 trip. If you do own an iPod you clone your system and the most important applications and data. The advantage is immediate recovery of your computer (assuming the death was caused by hard drive failure) and a quick repopulation of your drive (assuming the problem was data corruption rather than a bad drive). The disadvantage is the loss of space for music. Although I could go this route, I have chosen to use DVDs. I have created an emergency boot DVD that includes vital applications and data. I can restore my hard drive using this DVD in about an hour. I keep it in my computer bag all the time and since my data is stored in an encrypted Stuffit file I don't worry about data theft. Since much of my data will out of date when I travel I either make a new DVD with just the data (maybe adding applications that are needed for that trip) or put it on a flash drive. I always travel with a flash drive and transfer updated data files to it - including my email. Note: I don't worry about trying to carry a full restore for my computer while traveling, just what I'll need for the trip. david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Lombard and HP printer issue
Recently acquired a new HP 7660 printer on eBay for next to nothing, but there's one issue I can't resolve. With the printer connected to the USB port on my Lombard 333 running 10.2.8, if the computer goes to sleep, it refuses to reawaken, forcing one to use the three finger restart. This behavior seems isolated to only this HP printer -- although I don't have another USB printer on hand to try. However, it doesn't occur with any other device (scanner, Palm cradle, external HD, etc) plugged into a USB port. It occurs with either port. I've also tried a powered hub, with the same result...without the printer connected, it sleeps and reawakens normally. Repairing permissions makes no difference. I've installed the latest HP printer driver, with the same result. While this is more of an annoyance than a Big Deal, it's a PITA to have to remember to disconnect the printer every night before putting the Lombard to sleep. I guess I could just set it to never sleep, but I've always been under the impression that increases wear and tear on the HD. Anyone else come across this? Any ideas I haven't thought of? FinderPop like utility for OS X
Have a brand (new to me) Pismo, first OS X laptop. On my desktops I use my Kensington trackballs that have a button set to control-click, but I am NOT going to lug around a mouse to use with my new laptop. Under OS X there used to be a utility called FinderPop, which among a number of other things, set the contextual menu to pop up when you held the mouse button down qithout moving it for a time. FinderPop was never updated for OS X; does anyone know of anything that does this for OS X? (I don't need contextual navigations of my hard drive, the internet and have a dock/desktop/Finder replacement app, I just want the bleep context menu to pop up. Suggestions? Re: Lombard HD
I'm quite enjoying the 20GB Seagate Momentus drive I picked up for my Wallstreet. I went with Seagate for their reputation. Bruce Bruce: I recommend FruitMenu http://www.unsanity.com/ which has a Click and Hold Mouse to Access Contextual Menu in FInder feature. But of course this only applies to the Finder. Personally, I carry around a small two button scroll wheel optical mouse with me anyway and I use USB Overdrive to program my buttons (scroll wheel is a button too). I have done this during the four years I used my Pismo and continue with my new PBG4 1.5GHz. Turtle-Bear -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... How do current iBooks fare in multimedia apps like iMovie or Garageband?
I was wondering... How do current iBooks fare in multimedia apps like iMovie or Garageband? Currently I own a SLOW Pismo G3 with a 5400rpm hard drive, and 768mb of RAM. I've been thinking of upgrading to an iBook rather than a more expensive Powerbook. Does the slower 4200 rpm hard drive hamper multitrack recording or digital editing much? Does it stutter during playback etc.? Thanks, Bill M -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Pismo repairs
Am finally cleaning out our last few Pismos, now fixing them up for sale. Have found two that are giving me problems: 1) Pismo 500 had a ruined hard disk cable: the part that connects the HD to the logic board had a hole burned in it! I replaced the cable and popped a new HD in there, then tried to reboot. Got the usual startup bong, but then a blank grey screen. Have reset PRAM and power manager, but still grey screen. Was unable to boot from CD. Have tried different processor, RAM and keyboard. Same grey screen. Any ideas? 2) Pismo 400 that was working fine except for CD-DVD, which reads DVDs but not CDs. I have swapped a lot of Combos and Superdrives into the Pismo bay units over the years with 100% success rate. I've tried different Combos and a Superdrive with this unit, but there are a couple problems: the unit is not reported correctly in Apple System Profile, i.e. the model number has weird symbols in it (%, etc.); same with Patchburn; mounted disks are not recognized; the Combo and Superdrive are recognized in Toast 6, but I can't burn (error message). The weird thing seems to be the drive versions being partially recognized. What could cause this? Defective slot on logic board that bay unit connects to? Is this part of logic board, or separate piece? Any and all help greatly appreciated. Pismo repairs
NOTE: Just tried removing the HD altogether, and disconnecting HD cable, and upon restart I got a flashing Q mark, then was able to boot from CD. Do you think it's the HD cable, or the whole HD logic board connector? Would the latter require a new logic board? --- Am finally cleaning out our last few Pismos, now fixing them up for sale.
