Re: iBook DVD Player question
Does choosing Maximum Size *after* entering full-screen mode have any effect? Full-screen mode can be activated regardless of the selected screen size. Cheers, Ben On 22 Mar 2005, at 16:17, Laurent Daudelin wrote: Well, it happens to both. As soon as we enter full screen, the picture shrinks to about half the size it was, without any error messagee of that sort... -Laurent. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: monitor stand for Bookendz docking station for PIsmo
I'm not sure that you can run a Pismo closed with or without an external monitor without a hack of some kind. I ran mine with a 17 VGA monitor with a spanned desktop. I elevated the Pismo, on a two-bay external HD case, so that its screen was roughly level with the monitor. This left most of the bottom exposed although I still had the fan fire up when watching DVDs or playing games like Baldur's Gate II. Jason -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: repair Wallstreet power adapter
I've tried it. It is a pain in the neck, and probably not worth spending time on. The yo-yo's are difficult (not impossible) to get apart, and as the usual issue is the cord, you probably won't get anywhere with repair attempts. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Both will need to be compiled for OS X, and will require X windows to be installed to use their front ends. They are not easy to pick up on by any stretch of the imagination. Another idea would be to install something like nmap (another command line program) on your powerbook. You can use some of it's commands to locate all hosts on your network. For example: nmap -sP 192.168.0.1/24 will ping all 254 addresses on the 192.168.1 network (a common network configured internally for people that are using NAT internet gateways and the like). It will return a list of all of the active IP addresses that it finds. All three of the previously mentioned apps are open source. You will more than likely need to have the developer tools installed to make them work. A background in networking will help with deciphering the output of Ethereral and snort. It's important to note, that even though you may not have any applications open on your Mac that you will probably see some network activity on your network (even when you are not logged in). This could be background processes running on the machines on your network, or other miscellaneous network traffic. Activity lights that light up just when they see activity on a certain interface are not necessarily an indication of any heinous activity occurring on your network. (Although it never hurts to check). Very interesting, thank you. I had no idea that nobody has designed a simple program that can do this. Most people needing to find other computers on their network use the network browser, built into the OS, like the finder Go Network link, or the Network icon in a finder window. Um, you did look there, right? :-) However, what you're talking about is intrusion detection, which is another kettle of fish entirely. As it is NmapFE is pretty simple. It will tell you what other systems are on your network, and what, to some extent they're doing there. wireless security
I have a question about wireless security. I have a wireless router with cable modem. My next door neighbor has gotten emails with attachments from one of our accounts. 1. we don't have our next door neighbors email address in any of our address books and never even had it. 2. he has been receiving them one each sunday for the past 3 weeks and 4 days in a row back in February. 3. No one in our address book has received any emails to my knowledge I had the wireless running without encryption for a while because I couldn't get the powerbook to work with it. I stopped broadcast of network and pinging and changed the network name. I now have it running with 128 bit encryption. Is it possible for someone to copy an address and send emails? How can this be stopped. I changed the password today. I suspect trouble maker neighbors caddy corner to us because the last attachment was called DOG and we just got a dog. I could be wrong. How can I find out who might have sent the emails? I sent emails to the Abuse desk but it's all automated and if they check it out, not sure what they would do about it. I checked the security log for the router and it blocks one address constantly and a few odd others. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: wireless security
On Mar 22, 2005, at 9:56 PM, Debra Platt wrote: I have a question about wireless security. I have a wireless router with cable modem. My next door neighbor has gotten emails with attachments from one of our accounts. Do you know how specifically your neighbor is getting access to your email messages? I can think of four possibilities: A. Your correspondents are sending email to your neighbor instead of to you. Seems strange, but if you have similar names it might be the case. You can rule this out, however, if you are receiving the emails on your account. If it is the case, tell your correspondents to use your correct email address. B. Your email is being mis-delivered to his/her account. This seems unlikely, but if you both have the same service provider, I suppose it's possible. This one needs to be fixed by your service provider. C. Your neighbor is accessing your ISP's email server and downloading your mail. Hard to see how this could be accidental, since s/he would have to know your user name and password. I'm not a lawyer, but if this is the case, one option for you is to (threaten to) call the police. If your neighbor somehow guessed (or was told) your password, changing it should fix the problem. Just choose a good password and don't tell him/her. If your neighbor discovered your password by eavesdropping on the wireless connection, see D below. D. Your neighbor is eavesdropping on your wireless connection. This would take a fairly geeky neighbor, but it is possible. Unfortunately, pretty much all of the 802.11 security modes can be cracked, so if your neighbor is geeky enough and determined enough, changing your wireless settings probably won't stop it. The police option (C) might be effective. Another approach might be to see if your ISP supports SSL access to its mail servers. If so, that should stop any eavesdropping. Is it possible for someone to copy an address and send emails? How can this be stopped. I changed the password today. Now I'm not sure if I understand your problem. From this sentence (and below) I'm wondering if the problem is that your neighbor isn't stealing your email messages but, rather, is receiving bogus email that appears to be from you (but isn't really). If that's the case, disregard A-D above. But I've got bad news for you. If someone on the Internet wants to pretend to be you (as far as email is concerned) it's extremely trivial and there is nothing you can do to either stop it or identify the offender. (I could send an email to this list that appeared to come from you in about 30 seconds.) It doesn't take breaking into your wireless network and could be done from anywhere on the Internet, so, if it's any consolation, don't worry about your wireless settings. iBook won't boot up from CD
