Re: MCE Wallstreet optical EBM

2005-03-27 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Also . . . the thought has occurred to me there might still be a market
for optical EBMs for these older 'Books. Anyone care to comment on the
business case for producing a few hundred EBM kits (maybe just EBM shell
and IF PCB, sans mechanism) that could be used in both Wallstreet and
3400/Kanga?
Good find, Dan!
I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd pay for such a kit...
Providing it's priced reasonably, of course. That would probably be
under $50 for me, considering that these 'Books are rapidly becoming
vintage. How much do you think it would cost to have a factory
whip up a few hundred of these boards?

Peace,
Drew

Ok. This is curious.
Wouldn't calls for the net get logged somewhere? I'm not sure where
actually.
If you have ppp logging enabled it's in /var/logs/ppp.log, iirc.

They must succed when I'm on steady connection, as there is no
LS dialogs so I think whatever calls there are (if that is the reason),
they must be within the Little Snitch Rules I have.
There is also the possibility that there is no call, but a setting that
keep telling my machine to use the modem. The silence online is an
indication of that there are calls, but when I'm online I keep the
modem
turned off in Network, because Safari and other apps for some reason
goes
there instead of going to the only live connection, so it's possible
whatever is calling only wants to use the modem.
This is likely because the modem is at the top of the network

confidurations section you can drag the things up and down to
re-arrange the order they're tried in,

There is a different solution. If you sign up for a free efax account
which gives you a fax number out of your area code (to induce you to
buy an 800 number or one in your area code) You can give people this
fax number as a temp or permanent number to use. Anyone who sends a
fax to this number with a conventional fax machine will be effectively
sending you an email with a fax attachment which you can acccess while
you're online. I think that the link is: http://efax.com

I'd buy one or more. The major difficulty I see is sourcing the

Blank disks not recognized

2005-03-27 Thread Cheryl Goody
Aloha Group!

My first post although I've been lurking for quite a while and have learned
loads. Tried my local user group, but so far no solution.

This is a new problem for me -- I've never seen it before. Whenever I insert
a blank disk in my PowerBook (Pismo) or in my external QueFire burner, it is
not recognized. Tried three different blanks, and none showed up in Finder
or anywhere. But when I inserted the same disk in my iMac G4 (Manapua), it
pops right up with a message asking what to do with it. Things I've already
tried: checking the CD/DVD System Preferences, Repairing Permissions,
restarting, and logging on as another user. CDs with information on them are
readily recognized. And when I tried using Disk Utility to make a disk image
out of the disk I want to copy, the program makes the requested disk image,
but then the Burn icon is grayed out! What is going on here?

My system looks like this:

PowerBook G3 400
576 MB memory
40 MB internal HD
160 MB external HD
Matsushita internal CD/DVD drive
QueFire External Cd-RW drive
External monitor and keyboard
Airport network
System 10.3.8
(Imac is still running Jaguar)

Thanks,
Cheryl

P.S. I'm in Digest Mode, so direct reply appreciated.

Hi Cheryl,
I am having exactly the same problem with my G4 Al PB. It is not
reading blank disks that my friend's PB is able to read instantly.
This only started happening for me recently and I called Applecare.

I have not been able to figure out why it suddenly started doing this
as it was working perfectly before. I have tried all the things you
have - i.e. repair permissions, checking preferences etc and went
through all of that again with the Applecare tech before they agreed it
was probably a hardware problem.

I won't know until I get it in for them to check over but have been
sick for the past couple of weeks so haven't been able to get it down
there yet.

It is possible you have a hardware problem but it is quite possible we
are both unaware of some other sort of solution.

Amber
