Although 24/96 is available, many pro engineers are still recording
projects at 44.1 or 48. You can really mess up the sonic qualities of
the audio from poorly done conversions from 96 to 44.1 rendering it
worse than just recording at a lower level to begin with.

iPhoto/iChat question

2005-04-07 Thread walter
Hello learned listers,
just wondering whether anyone can help me out on this.
Lost some iPhotos in some silly sort of way (and learnt to my
subsequent regret that in OS X there is no possibility of retrieving
deleted files, short of forking out thousands to data recovery firms...
I suppose this is what you call progress, compared to good old OS
9...).

Luckily I had sent most of the lost batch to my wife using iChat. As
it happens, the iChats were saved (hooray!), so the photos are still in
there somewhere. If you enlarge the chat window they come up really
big. Thing is, it seems impossible to 'extract' them, even by
copy/paste.

So the question is: anyone has any idea if and how one can suck out
pictures off iChat bubbles? The photos were not sent as attachments,
but just pasted right into the bubbles, if you know what I mean. It was
cute at the time. It would be nice if there was a slick way to get
them back and place them in the iPhoto album.

Thanks for any tips
(I've tried the iChat board but so far with no success)
Regards,
Walter

Yes, I did rebuild a Pismo battery. I think. However, I was unable to get it
to take a charge, probably because I could not reset the little circuit in
every battery that tells the computer where their charge is. So, unless you
know how to do that, you might not want to try this if you don't want to
waste your time...

24 bit / 96Khz is minimum standards these days for recording and is only
a few hundred dollars, less second hand. There are alternatives for
PCMCIA, USB as well FireWire. Why would anyone hate music so much to
settle for something else is beyond me. Even if the end result is Mp3,
the result *will* be better with a high quality recording to start with.

Also, I'd recommend to use a quality vinyl player. I use a Technics 1200

Make sure the shielding tape on the inside of the bottom case hasn't come

Well, for one thing, disk problems are never good. So, you are saying that
while copying the installers to another machine, it crashed? What crashed
exactly? The Finder? When talking about installers, I'm assuming you mean
"packages" (.pkg)?

It is just a little bit confusing where you are right now...

didn't have yet time to check the iLife & Garageband install logs on the
clean system, will do that next thing (don't have the PB with me now). But
the Security Update Install log simply mentioned it had failed (no other
clues). Didn't check permissions after the clean OS install. Do I have to???

First thing I did after the the first batch of installs was copying the
installers over to another machine over airport. While copying is where it
crashed the first time. By the time I managed to launch disk utility, the
other partitions had gone and repair disk permissions was hanging at about
10% progress, machine froze. By the way, disk utility reported the other
partitions as OK, even if they were grayed out. Its log, showed "mount OK"
when i tried to mount them.

System logs seemed to show only a problem related to the Modem at boot time
(?? I do not use it in any internet config), and something very cryptic
probably related to the missing Volumes. Nothing I understood, but these
partitions are clearly not the problem, rather victims. I gave up
scrutinising the logs and went for the OS install instead, hoping to wipe
the problem, which apparently I didn't.

cheers, gianfranco

Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-07 Thread gianfrancosciacca
I've installed this yesterday and it seemingly ended up jumbling my 1GHz
powerbook OS 10.3.8. The installer reported a failure, while other installs
initiated with "software update" went ahead fine (one of them after the
security update, according to the logs).

I've seen no reports of complaints about this security update, so I assumed
the problem being local, although I found no clear evidence of the reason
from the logs. Some of the symptoms were crashes (at first) the failure to
mount the other 3 partitions I have, the external FW drive and CDs & DVDs. I
could not recover the OSX partition and (after backing up all the partitions
by booting in FW disk mode, I tried archive and install from an original
10.3.5 DVD, which failed. I then went for clear and install which went
through fine. Upped to 10.3.8 via software update, no prob.

But now the iLife 05 installer crashes just as it starts installing (when it
reaches the bit about online registration, etc). I tried iPhoto installer:
crash. Garage Band went all the way through, only to tell me at the end that
the install had failed. Any idea as to what's going on?

Only thing I can think of, is I had replaced the bottom 256 MB RAM module
with one of the exactly same type, same manufacturer, same everything (down
to the sticker on it), except it is 512 MB. But I had, since the RAM
upgrade, installed anew iLife with no problems and also fairly big programs
such as Logic PRO, etc and the PB has given me no issues to deal with, until
yesterday.

It sounds like a fairly complex issue, so does anyone have suggestions about
where to look (cryptic logs, etc) or what to do to toubleshoot this? I would
not really think it's the RAM the issue here... I mean, OS X installed fine
eventually... or?

cheers, gianfranco

"Contentment lies within a (wo)man, in the heart: and
the way to be comfortable, is not by having our barns
filled, but our minds quiet. The contented (wo)man, saith
Seneca, is the happy (wo)man: discontent is a fretting
humour which dries the brains, wastes the spirits,
corrodes and eats out the comfort of life: discontent
keeps a (wo)man from enjoying what (s)he doth possess."
