If you're plugging the iPod into a USB port on the computer to
charge it, you don't need to change anything on it. What comes out
of the USB port should be the same no matter what is charging the
computer's battery.

If the charger plugs into a wall socket, the charger should have
the relevant information on it. Law requires a label or embossing on
the charger (or anything else you plug in).

For example, a Powerbook charger says Input: 100-240v 50-60
Hz. That tells you it can use both US's 120 voltage and most of
the rest of the world's 240 voltage. If an iPod wall-plug charger
says something similar, you don't need to transform the power, just
adapt the plug.

On the other hand, if the info says something more limited, like
Input: 120v 60 Hz, that means US power only and that you have to
use a transformer with foreign electricity.

If you plan to use a phone cable for the computer, it must be
converted also. Additionally you would be wise to get a device to
tell you if the signal from the phone jack is safe. Some places have
a different type of signal, which will harm the computer. This may
not be relevant since your US ISP probably does not have a dial-up
number in London so you'll be using wireless anyway. But check this
out before plugging in a phone cable.

One more thing--Apple sells a world adaptor pack; would there be
any reason I couldn't just use the plugs I already have?

Plugs and sockets are different in different parts of the
world. UK plugs have round prongs (I think) so you need something to
adapt the different shaped prongs to the sockets you'll encounter.
Besides Apple's adapters, there is a device sold in hardware stores
that combines a small surge protector with an adaptor for different
socket configurations.

Have a good trip.

Peter

Apple's world kit adapters are nice! I have used them frequently.
Too bad they out last two Apple power adapters for my iBook.

Hello All,

Since I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.1 FireFox does not run News

there a remedy for this ?

TIA, greetings, Andre.

I haven't upgraded to 10.3.x let alone 10.4.x, but whenever I've seen
this sort of error, I know its time to do a fix permissions on the
startup OS X drive with disk utility. I'd assume that's still the
case, but I could be all wrong ;)

Tibook display pinout

2005-06-05 Thread Bruce Johnson
DanK, I accidentally deleted your e-mail, but what I'm thinking of
doing is trying to use it as a standalone display.

It's a UA owned system, so I can't just sell it for parts, but if I
could get it to work with a DVI output, I'd be upgrading my existing
15 conventional LCD display with something really cool...

He said his g router worked fine with b cards, but not the reverse.

He's running some model Linksys G router now, I'm not sure what he

Broken router issues aside, Linksys sux. Time and again, I've seen
their older routers (built before the Cisco buyout) provide poor

Add another computer or two. In my experience, that's when they fall
flat -- when you expect them do actual routing.

Re: Heat issue/Apple

2005-06-05 Thread Tim Collier
My wife and I each have an iBook, both purchased last November and
now both running 10.4.1. We have no issues with heat. Do you hold
the computer on your lap or on an unventilated surface?
In the past, when I first got this iBook, I used to hold it on a
pillow on my lap and yes, it got HOT. I looked into this and saw an
article about how most laptop computers need to be on a firm (so air
can circulate around it) surface. I bought a little tray at
CompUSA. Now, I use it on the pillow on my lap and the iBook stays
cool.
My wife has no issues with heat either, of course she leaves hers
sitting on a table and hunches over it (how she does it is beyond me
(looks really uncomfortable--but that's what she's always done)).
