The screen, keyboard, plastics, all look superb, and I replaced the
hinges on the screen once so they are stiff like in a new model. But
it won't boot. If I reset the power manager about 10 times it will

Sounds like it needs a new PRAM battery, no?

If that's it, I'll be thrilled. I've changed PRAM batteries in lots
of Macs, and none of them had the same symptoms. Most of them started
out by showing a Jan 01, 1904 date stamp before leading to more
serious failure, but I've also seen them just up and die, unable to
boot at all. The triple chime really had me going. But I've got a
spare battery that works, so I can try this out. Stay tuned. If this
turns out to be the ticket I'm going to be very happy.

Both Aaron and Brian are correct.

As shipped by Apple, the iBook only supports mirroring, that is,
showing the same thing on two monitors. This is Apple's position on
what is supported.

There is a hack you can do, however, shown here: www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/supportlist_e.html> along with a link to
software to do it for you.

Since your friend isn't technically oriented, I'd certainly confirm
(via the forums on that web site) that her particular model is/is not
known to work with it.

Re: external monitor on iBook

2005-06-20 Thread Brian
Simply put, an ibook comes with a VGA adapter, which means it should
work with most monitors. There is another adapter for $20 to plug it
in to a TV, and I think a similarly priced one for hooking up to a
newer, more advanced flat screen LCD monitor. Plug the two together
and that's it.
that's the simple part- plug it in and it will work. The complex
part is that when you plug the iBook in it will do video mirroring,
which means that whatever is on the iBooks screen will be what will
show up in the external monitor, and it will show up exactly the
same. If you want to extend the desktop, or work on the other
monitor at a different resolution, you will need a hack to do so.
Don't worry, though, this hack is easy to set up and use, should you
choose to use it.

Can anyone tell me a quick and reliable place to go for which
models can run external monitors with which cables, etc.? I would

the deal for her to buy the iBook.

Re: external monitor on iBook

2005-06-20 Thread Aaron Willems
You can hook up an external Monitor to an iBook, but it will only mirror the
display from the iBook. So if the top resolution of the iBook is 1024 x 758
that's what the external monitor will be. Since the iBook can only mirror
the external display, both the iBook and external monitor will show the same
thing.

If you want your external monitor to support higher resolutions, and be
treated as separate device, you need to get a PowerBook.

Hope that makes since.

Re: Automatic Network Connection.

2005-06-20 Thread Karen Thompson
Laurent,

Your post didn't get unnoticed. I was busy yesterday with a design job and
didn't get back to the network connection issue.

Per the OSX Hint

"10.4: Reclaim 'Automatic' AirPort network selection
Thu, Jun 16 '05 at 09:07AM
from: mikerose

For those of us (foolhardily?) brave enough to upgrade to Tiger via Archive
& Install, one of the annoying consequences can be the inability to select
anything other than "A specific network" in the Network settings panel to
join by default. The new "Preferred Networks" setting is also AWOL. (Another
annoying consequence of an Archive & Install: Volume Logic doesn't move to
the new installation ... drat!)

While this hint discusses general tips for cleaning out the Airport
known/preferred network list, the solution for this problem is much simpler:
delete and recreate the network locations that use Airport (Location menu ->
Edit Locations... -> Delete). Voila! The Automatic & Preferred Network
choices now show up."

The only airport location I could find was Automatic and I couldn't delete
it. I ended up going to Library/Preferences/ and deleted the file
com.apple.networkconfig.plist. So far, I still have a connection.

Thanks to all with suggestion.
