Re: Hard Drive Replacement
Come on, I loaded it onto a 4GB drive. Now that's cramped! Two questions: 1. Can a reasonably handy person (rebuilt the carburetor for my 1965 Mustang once) replace the HD in this model iBook? Never worked on a Mustang (horse, plane nor car). But I have rebuilt a '69 Toyota's carburetor and replaced an iBook's HD. The carburetor is easier. The key is to get a good set of take apart instructions for the iBook then tape every screw as you remove it to the instructions in the appropriate location. When I did it I lined up all the screws in a row but as I was putting it back together there was one screw I just couldn't find a place to put back. There were about 65 screws. 2. Can anyone recommend a HD? I went to http://www.pbparts.com/shop/ and found an 80 GB Hard Drive (Toshiba 5400RPM): This Toshiba 80GB 5400RPM drive has a huge 16MB buffer, improved noise reduction, and low power consumption. Here is a link to specs for the 8026GAX. This drive has a three year warranty from Toshiba Note: This drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops. 8026GAX. At the same site, also found: This is a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 60GB 7200RPM 2.5in ATA-6 Mobile Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer. Here is the spec PDF for the Hitachi Travelstar 7K60. This drive is equiped with a large 8MB Data Buffer and a 7200 RPM Spindle Speed for increased performance. Note: This drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops. Would I see a noticeable difference in the 7200 vice the 5400 RPM drive? This thing is already running very slow when compared to my G5 iMac. The iBook now has an IBM-DJSA-210 HD, according to System Profiler, and when I looked it up online, I found that it runs at 4200RPM. So, 5400 would be an improvement; 7200 would be a vast improvement, no?? Suggestions gratefully accepted and many thanks. They both sound good. I'm not sure if the ATA-6 is okay or not, there is a problem with some version of ATA but I don't know what it is. Hey Bob, -Original Message- From: G-Books [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of bobgir2004 Sent: Saturday, August 20, 2005 9:45 PM To: G-Books Subject: Hard Drive Replacement I just loaded Tiger onto my G3 Dual-USB iBook with the 9.24GB capacity HD and I realize I barely have breathing room left. Two questions: 1. Can a reasonably handy person (rebuilt the carburetor for my 1965 Mustang once) replace the HD in this model iBook? Recently, I swapped the 10GB in my iBook (dual USB-500) for a 40GB obtained on eBay. Used the guide from PBFixit.com (http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/50.0.0.html) and the whole thing took about twenty minutes. The take-apart looks daunting at first, but it goes quickly. Hardest part (for me) was getting the darned plastic case separated... the stylus from my Palm Pilot came in handy for this. 2. Can anyone recommend a HD? The drive I got was a Toshiba 5400 RPM... if I remember correctly. I was looking for a 60 or 80 GB drive, but the 40 was a buy-it-now at a good price and it really is enough for my needs ('specially with a 40 GB USB external drive). Also use external scsi drives through a Microtech USB-SCSI adaptor. I use the drive as a single 40 GB partition since I have no need for classic on the 'book. Maxed out the ram and 10.3.9 runs very well for me. Amanda -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Safari Mail: network connection problems
Hello to all from Jakarta, I've been reading this list for a few month now, and would like to ask your help for the following. I have the only Mac (iBook G4, 1.33 Ghz, 768 RAM, OSX 10.3.9) recently admitted to my workplace's Windows network, only for internet access. On inserting the ethernet cable, Network status shows that I am connected to the internet. But when I start up Safari (1.3) I get no connection (even though configured for the webproxy server settings my admin gave me). Whereas Internet Explorer and Firefox do connect. I also would like to access my pop.account with a local ISP, but I have no success with Mail (1.3.11), nor with Thunderbird (1.0.6) or with Entourage 2004. All programs function well when connecting via ISP dial-up. I would like to keep using Safari and Mail from my office network. Is there something I should do on my system, or is there anything I can tell my network administrator who has no experience wth Macs? Gratefull for your assistance Toga -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The tricky thing here is that SOME of its works but some does not. The webproxy thing sounds like it's the issue. Can you 'ping' ? Startup Terminal.app and type ping -c 5 www.apple.com and see what happens. What about iChat? It's a good network connection monitor. In Preferences Network, Location Automatic show Built-In Ethernet and then 'Proxies' ... is that where you configured it? Is /Applications/Utilities/Network Diagnostics something new in Tiger? If not, try that? TjL -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
