I'm running Garage Band 1.1.0 on my Pismo G3/400. It's somewhat limited
as to how many tracks you can use, but it's OK enough.

I don't think iLife 03 came with Garageband, did it?

Also, I think iMovie version 2 was the best on my Pismo (400MHz G3). I
tried version 3 and it was WAAAy too slow and skipped a lot.

internet connection depends on angle of screen

2005-09-24 Thread Claire Hart
My 17" 1.5 GHz PowerBook (July 2004 model) just recently began having
trouble getting and maintaining a wireless internet connection when
it's open at a comfortable angle. The screen needs to be opened
about 60 degrees for the computer to get or maintain the wireless
capability. The result is that I have to move the screen to an open
angle of around 60 degrees (give or take), click where I want to go
next, wait for it to load, then open the screen back to a comfortable
angle to do what I want to do. I have tried this at home as well as
at a coffee shop with free wireless internet. I'm pretty sure that
this behavior started BEFORE I installed VirtualPC and Windows.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Claire

Re: Magnet used in iBook latch?

2005-09-24 Thread Richard Clark
If this is a g4 ibook the magnet goes on the right hand side of the
ibook near the edge close to the slot loading drive, it was glued
there originally but mine came off too when i pulled my book apart,
there is a mold line in the plastic that shows you where it was, you
need to put it back correctly or it will eventually crack the case
like it did mine. If you can't figure it out send me an email and i
will send you a picture of my crack so you know where the magnet goes.

Remembering previous problems with Wallstreet problems when replacing the
hard drive and how it affected the lid's switch, I think that the magnet is
used in the latch to activate some switch that tells the iBook it has to go
to sleep or to awake.

However, I haven't found any reference to this magnet in the PBFixIt
documentation.

Does anybody know exactly where this magnet go?

Thanks in advance!

In any of the all white iBooks there is a magnet around the release
latch that attracts the hook out of the lid. I just tested it and it
seems like it must also operate the sleep sensor as the latch only
just enters the hole when it goes to sleep. It can sleep without the
latch engaging mechanically.

So I'd say it has to go very close to the latch hole above the latch
release button and near the trackpad button. The magnetic field is
centered about that hole.

I'm having trouble getting Mail to send messages.

I believe (but don't know) that it's because my ISP
(Earthlink) made changes to the outgoing mail server settings.
Evidently they made these changes a month ago, but I just started
having trouble in the past day. I changed the settings as
instructed, but still cannot get the server to accept more than one
message at a time.

Anyone on Earthlink know the secret to getting this to work,
or is there some other problem that I don't know about?

   Peter

EarthLink made some changes months ago, where you had to change the
outgoing to smtpauth.earthlink.net in order to make everything work.
In the Outgoing Mail Server area, click on the Advanced button and
make sure that the MD5 Challenge-Response is selected and your entire
email address is in the User Name spot.
I see occasional drops, where their servers won't send mail, but I
can switch to my own site's servers and that works fine.

Hi:

If you are using smtpauth.earthlink.net, check Mail> Preferences>
Accounts> and look for the Earthlink account. Click on the server
settings button. Using smtpauth.earthlink.net as your outgoing mail
server will require a password for X Mail to send mail. Make sure
that the password is there and that you have the proper server port ,
which may vary (but may possibly be 587), but I cannot be sure.

If you can, try and chat with an Earthlink support person. I lost
the ability to E-mail and found that there support people were
surprisingly knowledgeable.

Re: Outgoing mail password

2005-09-24 Thread John Siple
I've had some smtp password problems recently, but not with
Earthlink. I found that turning off my local router and restarting it
so that it had a different DHCP ID address solved the problem.

Running Tiger with Comcast and a wireless Buffalo AirStation router.

10.3.9 works OK on several of my WSs, including a WS I/292 MHz/83 MHz and
a WS II/266 MHz/66 MHz.

Moved to a Lombard with good results.

Got a fantastic deal on a Pismo/400 and upgraded it to a 500, also with
good results.

The Pismo will rip DVDs apart and then burn "clear text" (i.e., no
Macrovision) duplicates at high speed as to reading, and at high speed as
to writing provided the writer is Firewire, and at 4X as to writing if
the writer is internal.

I did install a CD/DVD writer in an MCE optical bay on the WS (I and II),
but I wasn't satisfied with the DVD playing, so I didn't evaluate the DVD
writing, so this application has necessarily been limited to CD writing,
which is fine.

I strongly suggest at least 10.3.9 and 384 MB for a WS, with dual boot
capability.

I've completely weaned myself from OS 9 on the Lombard and the Pismo.

Oh, 40 GB drives on the WSs; 60 GB drives on the Lombard and Pismo.
