Help with posting and USB for a Wallstreet
Anybody can help with this? I already replied to her directly but she could certainly benefit from the collective wisdom of the list, for both questions... -Laurent. -- Forwarded Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 14:24:55 -0500 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: I apologize in advance, but I need G-book help. Dear Mr. Daudelin, I apologize in advance for emailing you directly, but stated briefly, I need help finding out how to connect my Wallstreet II/233 with cache to USB so that I can buy a scanner. I have emailed G-Books#mail.maclaunch.com twice and had both messages rejected because both messages were received as follows: Failed to deliver to 'G-Books@mail.maclaunch.com' LIST module(list G-Books) reports: Your message cannot be posted. It is composed using the 'windows-1252' character set, and this list accepts ISO-8859-1 only I made sure the second email showed ISO-8859-1, so I don't understand what the problem is or how to correct the problem. What do I do to get the message posted and to get some assistance? Thanks, Barbara Tate -- End of Forwarded Message -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet batteries
-- In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Gene Osburn [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Wallstreet batteries Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 13:59:49 -0700 I've got a battery that doesn't show up when inserted. I assume it's dead. It's the only battery I have for this wallstreet. It's been stored for several years, was fine before that. Is there any utility that might get the computer to try charging it? I'm just wondering if maybe the charge has dropped so low that the computer doesn't recognise it, but perhaps if given some juice it may still have a little life in it. There used to be a little utility from Apple called, I believe, BatteryReset, which would just reset the little chip on the battery so that the battery would communicate with the Wallstreet that it's OK to charge. Not sure where it is on the Apple download site, though... Battery Reset only works with batteries that still have at least a trace charge in them. If the WS can't see the battery in the bay it's too dead to be revived. Sad but true -- LiIons that are stored for too long without at least a 30-40% charge will die. I've never even heard of any external charger/conditioner that will revive a LiIon once it's reached this state; has anyone else actually saved one of these...? I thought I should respond to this in case others read it while researching a solution to the same problem. I took Paul up on his kind offer and he quickly sent me the battery reset utility. It worked perfectly on the first try, and the battery charged for hours while I used the computer. I'm waiting on new hinges for the wallstreet so I've removed the display to protect the ribbon cables and am using an external monitor instead. After the battery was fully charged, I went on the net with the internal modem and the hard drive running constantly, and it lasted for 2 hours 55 minutes. I realize it won't last nearly as long when the display is back on, but I'm happy nonetheless. :) Thanks to all, Andrew -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Wallstreet II and USB with More Specs
Dear Listers: This is my third attempt. I'm using Netscape 7.02, and all the settings show ISO-8859-1, but I shall send this message in plain text as Laurent suggested. Third times a charm? My First Goal: To attach a USB connection to my Wallstreet II (Backside Cache 512K, Family 4753, Machine ID 312, PowerPC G3, 233 MHz, built in 1998 with SCSI only) so that I can buy a USB scanner. My Second Goal: Find out how to access really old archives on the G-Books' website. Because of Rita, we evacuated Houston with the bottom layer of our '98 Honday Odyssey van covered in plastic milk crates filled with 3-ring binders packed with financial, medical, and other treasured written records (maintained and undated ever since my husband and Noah fought the really big flood together), hunting guns (there is nothing worse than armed looters), dogs (2 with accompanying kennels), and clothes (very few). We made the three hour trip to Austin in 16 hours. There has to be a better way to deal with all those paper records! I figure the better way is to load up a small plastic shoebox with ZIP disks and maybe some burned CDs, or one of those little USB drives which would hold saved scanned copies of hard-copy financial records. Then we would have more room for clothes in case we had to recreate our lives. I know the WSII is old but it has functioned well for me since 1999. The specs on the machine as it is now (using Apple System Profiler and other records) are as follows: PRAM battery: new Built-in memory: 384 MB (upgraded) Three partitions: (1) main partition running MacOS 9.0.4, (2) Mac OS 9.2.1, and (3) personal data. ROM revision: $77D.41F6 Har Drive: Toshiba 30GB (upgraded) PCI: Slot$E1: Display Card Card Type: display Card Name: ATY, RageLTPro, Card Mode: ATY,LT-C To reach my First Goal, what do I need to buy to accomplish my goal of making this beloved WSII (read that as machine ain't broke and has had lots and lots of money poured into parts, labor, and software already) capable of using USB equipment. I prefer plug and play options rather than take apart and stare at the left-over screws options. As for reaching my Second Goal, how would I access information found in the G-Books archives for years prior to 2005? I think if I had been able to access threads in the really old archives then I might not have to be asking for help in reaching my First Goal, because the people who participate in this list are really helpful. Re: Help with posting and USB for a Wallstreet
Barbara Tate implores us: I need help finding out how to connect my Wallstreet II/233 with cache to USB so that I can buy a scanner. CardBus USB PCMCIA cards are plentiful (and relatively cheap) through a variety of online sources: ebay, the Swaplist, Mac retailers via the links at Low End Mac (gotta help the list sponsor when we can, eh?), etc. I'd suggest you try Amazon.com via the Low End Mac link. I have emailed G-Books@mail.maclaunch.com twice and had both messages rejected because both messages were received as follows: Failed to deliver to 'G-Books@mail.maclaunch.com' LIST module(list G-Books) reports: Your message cannot be posted. The list servers at maclaunch.com are notoriously flaky. I've had the same problem in the past, IIRC with Apple Mail in OS X 10.2.x; my compose/send format was properly set to ISO-8859-1 as well but I frequently got bounced. I don't recall details of how I dealt with it (I do remember using another email client [Thunderbird?] for a while), but it hasn't been an issue for me for some time now with updated versions of Mail (and 10.3 Panther). Perhaps the latest version of Mail will resolve the issue for you? Gene Osburn Friends don't let friends do Windows ebay ID: mac4gman Zip 99204 -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
