Re: Airport Question

2005-12-25 Thread Tim Collier
The truly amazing thing is the actual stupidity you come across in
this PC dominated world when it comes to Mac Networking. Back when I
used PC's I used a wired network and I was really new to networking
back then. I even took a course on it at a local community college.
With that under my belt and a couple of texts to refer to, I went at
it. I bought my routers and all of my cat 5 cables and then the PC's
still wouldn't cooperate. One would see some but others wouldn't
see others. It took me weeks to finally get it to where I finally
have everybody able to share files and printers. When I was able to
afford a Windows NT server, that helped quite a bit.
Then I made the switch in 2001 and started going over to wireless,
obvious choice was wireless and networking has never been so easy.
Using only Apple hardware probably has made it a lot easier on me
than using 2nd and 3rd party equipment. Everything works right out
of the box and works with little to no configuration. As far as
wireless networking, Apple the top of the line. I would not consider
using anything else.

Reminds me of when I went to Staples, and asked a salesperson about
setting up a wireless network between a PC and a Mac. They didn't

I got a Linksys WRT54G (not from Staples), installed an Airport
extreme card, called Linksys tech support and very soon after,
Voilà, the impossible was actually quite easy, even for a tech-
impaired person like me.

So they really don't want Mac users buying their product.

Don't you love Christmas? (Powerbook Ti keys)

2005-12-25 Thread MMB

Happy Boxing Day all, from Australia:
(Boxing Day is British/Australian name for 26 December, dating from
18c-19c and meanior boxing gifts)

I can't resist sending this Christmas story, and I have a request for
advice. First the story …

Yesteday during a Christmas stayover at my niece's, her three cats have
eaten four of my keyboard keys (one over-ate!)

Now of course in the shut-down period I am busy trying to find words
without s, d, a and w, especially s and w :-)

Do I sound as if I am smiling …?

Here is the question:

I have a Powerbook G4 Ti 867.

Has anyone had to replace keys on this model?

When the world wakes up from Christmas will I have to replace the whole
keyboard or can I buy the four keys separately?

Oh, and a long shot … I wonder if my Applecare warranty covers cats'
Christmas dinners?

What is the mailing list wisdom on this one?

Don't you love Christmas?

Maria Brandl
Mallacoota, Australia
(a long way from any Apple store)

2 gen iPod failure

2005-12-25 Thread Kristina
Christmas greetings...sorry to bother you guys...

problem with Christmas present...

My daughter loaded all her CDs on her DELL Inspiron 1150 using the 2 port
PCcard FW adapter
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/PCMCIA2P/
I had bought for my Lombard. Sorry for talking about a youknowwhat
machine...since it does not have a FireWire port either.

She had loaded iTunes from the program disk from her sisters mini...

isn't this PCcard a PC compatible card...it goes either platform?

we can't get it to download from the computer to the iPod...

from the OWC site they say

The only thing you will need to do is set your iPod to Disk mode manually
since no PCMCIA / PC-Card is able to bus power a device (or recharge your
 iPod, for that matter).

To do this, you need to reset your iPod by pressing the top and bottom (menu
play) buttons above and below the scroll wheel. When you see the Apple logo,
press and hold the fast forward - fast rewind buttons. You'll feel your iPod's
hard drive spinning, it is now powering itself from the internal battery. Hook
the iPod up to your PC-Card FireWire card and you should be ready to go!

This holding the fast forward - fast rewind buttons...makes the screen say
OK to disconnect...and nothing.

And it erased the previous library...

This 2gen iPod..is there a manual anywhere.

Kristina
with Christmas wishes
...wish this iPod would work.

Re: tiff file won't delete from trash

2005-12-25 Thread jocbr8
Hi, I'm trying to delete a corrupted tiff file off my iBook desktop and
throw out in the trash can. When I empty the trash can, a message says
that the tiff file is in use so it can't be deleted from the trash can.
I tried restarting my iBook a couple of times. But the message is the
same.

Anyone know a way to trash this corrupted tiff file? I'm running OS X.4

Thanks
 Jocelyn

Using the Command Line.

Launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities)

If the current user doesn't have admin privileges then type login
adminuser where adminuser is the short name for an admin. Press
enter then enter the password

type in sudo rm then drag the file ICON to the terminal window.
The system will fill in the path of the file.
Press return.
It will prompt you for the admin's password.

Check the trash, it should be gone.
