Kanga won't start

2006-01-09 Thread Mark
Greetings listers,

I've got a PowerBook G3 (original Kanga) that I can't get up and running.
I've tried asking at the Apple support site, but haven't gotten much help
yet so thought I'd try here. For those of you regulars at the Apple site,
sorry for putting you through this again. Here goes:

Here's what's happened, and what I've done: When I first got it it wouldn't
power up - nothing, no chime at all. I could hear power though (a slight
hissing through the speakers) when connecting the adapter. I reset by
pushing and holding the reset actuator several times. Finally got the green
sleep light to come on (steady, no blinking).

After a few more (maybe a dozen) resets I got a chime (YES!) and screen with
the flashing floppy and ? It would then power on to the flashing floppy
using the keyboard power button.

I inserted an OS 8 (and 7.5, and 9.1) cd figuring I'd wipe the drive and
start fresh. Every attempt ended with a dialog box stating this OS will not
run on this machine check your manual. These were all genuine Apple generic
cd's, not machine specific cd's.

I decided to open it up and check connections (and make sure there was a
hard drive). Everything seemed fine until I removed the cage holding the HD.
I then noticed that the Power Management Board seemed loose - not really
snapped in. I thought I had it figured out.

I snapped the PMB in, took the HD out and (with a another machine) repaired
and wiped it clean and then reassembled everything carefully and tried
again. But I'm back to where I started. It won't start up.

I've removed the RAM card and tried but no change. I've tried without the
keyboard connected. I've tried w/o the PRAM battery connected. I've tried
all kinds of combinations of these things. I've tried different power
adapters. I've checked and rechecked all connections inside (keyboard, HD,
etc.).

The results are the same: Connecting the power adapter immediately results
in a slight hissing from the speakers. The keyboard power button does
nothing. After resetting I can get as far as a steady green sleep light but
that's all. I haven't heard a chime or seen a flashing floppy in dozens and
dozens and dozens of attempts.

I have since replaced the pram battery and the only difference is that now
the green light will stay on even after the main battery and the power
adapter have been removed. I've taken this as a good sign (tho I don't know
why. Desperate I guess) So I'm stymied. Any one have any ideas?

any significance to Pismo screen cable color?

2006-01-09 Thread kaldav

Hello,
On a Pismo screen, could anyone please tell me if there is any
significance to the color of the cable that comes out of the screen
to the inverter board. I have seen blue or pink. Got to wondering if
there were certain brands of screens that matched certain inverter
boards better than others.

Thanks.

Well, Battery Reset does just this -- resets the battery. I got a Wallstreet

run Battery Reset on it and the battery started charging. It is now good for
about three hours work on a full charge.

Don't know, however, what Battery Reset does to a new battery or if it acts
differently with a non-apple battery. According to the Read Me file it
works with PowerBook G3 Series (family number M4753 or M5343) or iBook
(family number M2453) computers. Don't know offhand if the Pismo or the
Lombard are amongst those...

Re: Any experience with USB to SCSI adaptors in OSX?

Hello All

technology is the answer, what was the question?

Andrew,

I use the XpressSCSI adapter from Microtech. The adapter makes the
SCSI devices plugged into it, (daisy chained up to 7) look like USB
devices in OSX. I run Panther and there has never been a problem. The
devices I use on it: SyQuest removable drive (remember those?), SCSI
CD-burner (even works in iTunes), Jaz drive and an Epson SCSI printer.
I recently replaced the printer 'cause it finally died but it had
nothing to do with the adapter. The reason the Belkin adapter needs
drivers in the first place is due to the fact that it doesn't do what
the Microtech adapter does, which is simply fool OSX making it think
it's all USB devices. In fact, under System Profiler, SCSI still says
no devices found, and yet under USB all the devices come up, with the
adapter showing up as a USB hub. THE MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember
when using these adapters is to have an ACTIVE terminator on the last
chained device, NOT a passive terminator. That simple mistake can
cause the devices to simply not work, or worse, damage everything.
Hope this info helps in your SCSI quest.

bluetooth, AL-book, and Clie...

2006-01-09 Thread Brian McEwen

I have the 10.4 12 G4 aluminum, a Clie UX-50, and Missing Sync.

I wish to connect the PDA and Missing Sync with Bluetooth.

The PDA and the PB can do the initial discovery/trusted device thing
fine.

when I go to actually sync, the PDA gives me a unable to initiate
HotSync connection, port in use by another application.

This is after I have just used bluetooth on that PDA and laptop to
discover each other, validate by password, and save each as a trusted
device to the other.

I can sync with bluetooth just fine to the XP machine at work, no
change in settings on the Clie.

What is up with Bluetooth on the G4/10.4??

thanks,

Re: bluetooth, AL-book, and Clie...

2006-01-09 Thread Harry Corsover
My best guess is that this is a software/firmware problem with the
Clie, not the PB. I had a similar recurring problem in the past with
a Kyocera smart phone using a cable (it did not have Bluetooth). Can
you hot sync using the cable or cradle? If so, do that, and as an
experiment, soft reset the Clie and try the Bluetooth hot sync again.

If your experience is anything like mine, the novelty of using
Bluetooth to hot sync may wear off very soon. I now have a Treo 650
and a 15 AlBook G4, 1.25 GHz. It takes me a minute or so to hot sync
with the cable, and almost ten minutes via Bluetooth. This may be
because of the number of applications and files I have (including
Documents to Go with many files, as well as Acrobat Reader with
several files).

So I hardly ever use Bluetooth to sync any more. It is nice to have
it available in case I need to and I don't have a cable handy, though.

Synch works great over cable, Mac or PC, and great over bluetooth (PC).

It is a little slower but it sure is handy when I forget a cable- for
example at work today, I was able to use BT to get all my Exchange
calendar events onto the Clie, and from the Clie to iCal on the PB
later at home- I'd forgotten the USB cable I need and there were a
tons of meetings and appointments that I wanted to get on the PB ASAP.

Glad to know I'm not alone, but it seems to me if it's working great
with multiple PCs and fails with the Mac, the issue is the Mac...

Does it need a firmware update or anything?

Re: Google Earth Beta - please reply off-list

2006-01-09 Thread Dylan McDermond
It worked a whole lot better after I turned it down from some of the
high-end video settings which seemed to be more in line with a G5
desktop system's capabilities. Turned down to the medium-type
settings, it runs nicely on my 1.25ghz Powerbook/1gb RAM/64mb Radeon
9600 and also pretty well on my Dual G4 500mhz/1gb RAM/64mb Geforce2.

I don't think I'd try it on my wife's 400mhz G3 Pismo, though.

Do you want a copy?

Funny Vista Video

2006-01-09 Thread Clyde Kahrl
This is a really funny video of the Gates CES vista presentation with the
vista screen shots replaced by OSX screen shots. Be patient.

G4 upgrade for Lombard?

2006-01-09 Thread Caleb Cupples

Hi,

I seem to remember someone offering a G4/500 or 550 upgrade for the
Lombard series, but I can't seem to remember which company. I know the
WS I and II have available upgrades from Sonnet, but I'd like to bump
the Lombard up.

Also, are there any heat issues with Lombard/Pismo systems with G4
upgrades?

Caleb

Subject: any significance to Pismo screen cable color?

Hello,
On a Pismo screen, could anyone please tell me if there is any
significance to the color of the cable that comes out of the screen
to the inverter board. I have seen blue or pink. Got to wondering if
there were certain brands of screens that matched certain inverter
boards better than others.
Thanks.

I have taken apart probably 15 or so and quite a few Lombards, and
there is no difference. Pink and Blue are interchangeable.

Hot Lombard...

2006-01-09 Thread Caleb Cupples

Dear listers, and, more specifically, fellow Lombard users,

I've got my Lombard in my lap, as it virtually lives in my recliner.
However, I was watching some video in VLC when I felt things getting
hot. I then fired up TemperatureX and saw that my Lombard was running a
smokin' 183 degrees Fahrenheit. Didn't even hear a fan, but I know
there has to be on going, because it's dropped twenty-five degrees
since I've been typing this email. Is this normal for a Lombard to get
that hot?

Thanks,
Caleb

*All temperatures are CPU readings from TemperatureX.
