TiBook hinge replacement?

2006-02-10 Thread Beverly Woods

Hi folks,

I've been asked if I would replace the hinges on a 15 TiBook 800
MHz. From what I can see, Apple didn't ever intend the parts to be
disassembled that you have to take apart to do this, and it's a tricky job.

So I'd like to know whether anyone here has done this, successfully
or otherwise; how many hours did it take you? if you broke something,
what did you break? and if anyone knows the replacement cost of parts
that might get broken doing this, that would be good to know as well
(particularly wondering how likely it is that the LCD gets trashed and
how much it would be to replace it if it did.)

Thanks!

Beverly

Lombard Start

2006-02-10 Thread G Henry Taylor
I'm trying to install OS X on a Lombard. Install CD freezes within the
first 5 min of booting to the CD. I installed OS X to this HDD on an
external FW drive from my Pismo, yet the Lombard will not boot to this
drive. I can't seem to remember the boot commands from the keyboard to
accomplish this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?, or some
other fix?

TIA

Henry

Have you recently tried to upgrade the hard-drive? I ask because of
this little notice, from our very own databse:

 Warning

According to the Road Warrior and Other World Computing, the drive
controller in
G3 PowerBooks is incompatible with ATA-6 hard drives. When
replacing the internal
hard drive, you should be sure to obtain an ATA-5 compliant drive,
which supports

transfer speeds of up to 100 MB/sec.

If you have a non-compliant drive in there, it will play merry hell
with anything else on the machine's ATA bus as well.

How much RAM is in there? If you're adept, pop the keyboard, dive
inside and remove both RAM modules and check their chip-number via
Google to make sure the SO-DIMM is correctly labeled -- I've seen
more than a few mis-labeled DIMMs in my time, some under-rated to the
label, some over-rated.

If either of them are Apple-badged, put that one back in and leave
any after-market modules out (or if you replaced all Apple ones with
3rd-party's, put the Apple ones back in). To perform a stability
test, boot off a Mac OS 9.1 Installer CD, launch Drive Setup, and
leave it to do a drive test. This puts enough load on the CPU, RAM,
and keeps the ATA bus busy.

If it doesn't lock up after a test with the old RAM back in, then its
the RAM. If it *does* lock up, then its the CPU that's failing. It
could also be the ATA controller on the logicboard, or part of the
bridge-board as well, but they're usually pretty sturdy (and if they
decide to misbehave, they usually just stop dead).

Re: TiBook hinge replacement?

2006-02-10 Thread Dan K
Beverly Woods [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:
I've been asked if I would replace the hinges on a 15 TiBook 800
MHz. From what I can see, Apple didn't ever intend the parts to be
disassembled that you have to take apart to do this, and it's a tricky job.

So I'd like to know whether anyone here has done this, successfully
or otherwise; how many hours did it take you? if you broke something,
what did you break? and if anyone knows the replacement cost of parts
that might get broken doing this, that would be good to know as well
(particularly wondering how likely it is that the LCD gets trashed and
how much it would be to replace it if it did.)

I've got a page on the subject. Though I don't cover everything, I do
describe a successful method for opening the glued-together display.:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/tibook_display.html

Hinges are sold by several online vendors, as well as on eBay. I'd
suggest going for a new pair, it's not worth the aggravation to reopen
the bezel if/when the second one breaks. eBay search - powerbook hinge -
will find what you seek. Going rate for a new pair is ~US$100 - $130, new
and used singles sell from $30 to $60 or so.

Alternative is to buy a complete working DVI display, any from 667 to
1GHz will work.

I can replace a complete display assembly in roughly 1 hr total, but I
expect a first-timer might take several, even with a manual onhand. Even
if one fixes the existing broken display, it still makes a lot of sense
to remove the complete panel, makes things alot easier to manage. The
data cable is very vulnerable to damage, so be super careful whenever you
have to fiddle with it.

Pismo upgrades: The BlueChip G3 900 MHz

2006-02-10 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Well ... some things just never cease to amaze me.

Does anyone here have the incredibly good fortune to own the very
rare PowerLogix BlueChip G3 Pismo 900 (yes, that's right, the
sexiest machine Apple ever made can run at 900 MHz) CPU upgrade?

No?

Want one?

Well, ya can't have one. Unless ... read on!

It seems that when the lovely lads at OWC 'absorbed' PowerLogix (whom
I swear made *THE* best CPU upgrades ever -- Sonnet make shite, by
comparison) they merged their CPU upgrade lines, and the only Pismo
upgrade they kept was the NewerTech G4/500 (PPC7510).

BOOO!!! B *much raining of peanuts and hissing* BOO!

Charles Moore mentions the launch of the BlueChips in his MacOpinion
colums
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/04/04/13/index.html
with a 900 MHz (750FX) and 1 GHz (750GX) available back in late April
of 2004. Obviously *some* of them made it out the door, because
Charles has one, and at least one person bought *two* because he's
selling one on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/cp5hs ... and interestingly
enough, the seller's upgrade features a third chp, the low(er) power
750GL.

Man, my chin hit the floor, bounced four times and ran out the door screaming.

Now, I can kinda understand why OWC decided to not continue the
BlueChips, seeing as they already had the Newertech stuff, and the
fact that the BlueChip 900 was US$349 against the NewerTech G4/500 at
US$279 ... but *SURELY* when they took over they brought in whatever
remained of the BlueChip kits!! If so ...

Hands up all you Pismo addicts who'd like another crack at the
world's fastest Pismo upgrades? I know *I* for one am prepared to pay
the premium, who's with me? Shall we petition the lovely lads at OWC
with a last-chance group order?

Re: Lombard Start

2006-02-10 Thread henrytaylor
How much RAM is in there?
384. That's what came with the Lombard.

I swapped out the processor with another working Lombard. Viola, no problem.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Pismo upgrades: The BlueChip G3 900 MHz

2006-02-10 Thread henrytaylor

From: Geoffrey Peters [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Does anyone here have the incredibly good fortune to own the very
rare PowerLogix BlueChip G3 Pismo 900 (yes, that's right, the
sexiest machine Apple ever made can run at 900 MHz) CPU upgrade?

Hands up all you Pismo addicts who'd like another crack at the
 world's fastest Pismo upgrades?

Sounds like a winner to me...
Let's do it.

Re: Pismo upgrades: The BlueChip G3 900 MHz

2006-02-10 Thread Jason Long

Too late, I've already got one! smirk
I didn't realize that there were so few sold. I was a bit leery of
Powerlogix as I'd read some of the upset customer reports on the xlr8yourmac
database, but I got lucky with no problems and no delays once I'd decided
not to wait for the just announced 1 GHz G3 chip, but to settle for the 900
MHz.
It's no longer my primary computer as I bought a 20' iMac G5 1.8 a year ago
for more screen space. But I just took it on the road for a couple of weeks
and it did just fine although I was really wishing that I'd bought the damn
Airport card. Aside from frying the modem and Ethernet ports in a series of
lightning strikes a couple of years ago it runs great.

To pick a nit I'm pretty sure that Moore bought the G4/500 upgrade for his
Pismo, not the G3/900.
