Re: Lombard frying batteries???

2006-02-18 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
You are spending money like buying a Ti to repair a Lombard - WHY ?
There is no PMU board on a Lombard - so what is being replaced/repaired ?
Even if you are sending it away, take yer HD out - really easy in a Lombard

A: I like the Lombard/Pismo form factor much better than the TiBook
form factor. Also, the Lombard, if I spread the upgrades out over a
long enough time, it'll pay for itself in productivity. Plus, the
Lombard is much easier to upgrade...

Sorry in my attempt at brevity I managed to lose all coherence - blame the
ale !

I was trying to say, why pay that much for a repair - you could buy a couple
of complete ones for that price ?!!

B: I had no clue that there was no PMU on the Lombard. Thanks for telling me.

Well, there is no PMU board, there is a power board under the trackpad, so I
guess it is that one, a pretty cheap and easy to replace part.

C: I know how easy it is to remove a HD on a Lombard, and I've
rebuilt a PB 190 from parts, so I know how to do that stuff.

You were concerned about sending the machine away with all your stuff on it,
I was pointing out that it is a 10 second job to remove it on a Lombard,
probably easier than any other Powerbook, so there is no need for that
worry.

The computer formats may be the same but the video formats are not.
The videos are all in Pal format vs the North American NTSC format.
However, I am not sure if this really makes a difference once they
load them onto the computer. I would not be able to play a PAL

believe I can access it on my PB, similar to what I am doing now.

I have been able to access them using the VLC Streaming/Exporting

video and sound stutter.

Apple has recommended the MPEG-2 Playback Component add on but the
girl I spoke to at Apple did not seem very sure as to what it
actually was for...just that it MIGHT help.

Concetta

I've upgraded my BW (G4/450) and iBook (G3/500) from 4.3 to 4.4 to
4.5 and have had no problems at all.

Hey, all, thanks
I received a couple of posts encouraging me to go ahead and upgrade
from 10.4.2 to 10.4.5.

So I'm going to take the plunge... Thanks for giving me courage...
Concetta

I have only gotten into trouble *once* updating one of the Macs at
the school (of about 35-40), and that once was easily fixed (an AR
of 10.2 followed by re-applying the update, whole process took about
35 minutes). I could have fixed even quicker had there been another
account to log onto on the machine.

The only upgrade that has ever been a serious problem was 10.3 and
the Great Firewire Drive Massacre. Now, if you go to Macintouch or
Macfixit along about update time, you would believe that every
software update Apple has ever issued has been fraught with horrible,
data-eating, computer-killing monster bugs.

Some people have their ritual Boot from the CD, run Disk Repair,
reboot, run Permissions repair, reboot in Safe mode, run the update
whilst shaking a rattle and chicken feathers over the keyboard to
ensure a successful update.

Me, I fire up Software Update, then put it in the back and keep on
working usually on fifteen things at once. I have, to my knowledge,
never run Permissions Repair on my systems, Disk Repair (on my boot
drive) only once (and the problem was something else entirely) and
the only time I've ever had a problem was when I tried to install
Tiger via a DVD drive in what turned out to be a flaky external
firewire enclosure.

Took me a day to recover from that one, because I ended up manually
restoring my home folder, amid a number of permissions issues.

However, I ALWAYS do an upgrade (10.3.x to 10.4.x) via Archive and Re-
install, most people I've ever seen who had problems have gone the
Upgrade route.

As I said, updates (10.4.4 to 10.4.5) I usually run while I'm doing
other things. Of all my systems only one isn't a complete frankenmac:
my Pismo laptop, and IT has a slot loading DVD/CDRW transplanted from
a defunct TiBook.

I attribute my good luck to three things:

1) Clean Living...I rarely put tequila on my Cheerios anymore.

2) Plenty of Exercise...they won't let me put the coffeepot in the
office, so I have to walk ALL the way down the hall.

3) I have Backups of my Stuff. Irreplaceable files, such as iPhoto
Libraries, and iTunes purchases are backed up on multiple CD or DVD
disks, stored in different locations, and I have an external FW drive
that I back up my home directories to on a regular basis. There's
also a bootable system installed on that drive, so in an emergency I
can start up my systems from it as well.

4) All my Desktop systems are on uninterruptible power supplies, all
from APC http://www.apc.com/. They deliver clean, regulated power
to the computer, which helps ensure the best performance and longest
life for the electronic components. I don't get the oddball component
failures and suchlike that are common on these lists.

Since laptops are powered through adapters, and have batteries, this
is less important for them, because much of the regulating is done
automatically.

There are other brands than APC, but we use them exclusively at work
(counting the systems under people's desks we've probably got a
couple of hundred of 'em) and are very pleased.

Of my rules, I suspect #3 is the most important, followed by #4.

Ah, there is you problem. You cannot mix 25fps (PAL) with 29.97fps
(NTSC) on a DVD or within a single video file. You will need to
transcode the PAL material up to NTSC framerate. This can introduce
the stuttering you were speaking of earlier. There's not really
much of a way around it, though. Try using a couple of different
encoders and make sure that you set the output framerate to 29.97
before hitting any encode buttons. Then pick the one that has the
best framerate conversion. You;ll still end up with a bit of a blur
where you're introducing frames, but different encoders will produce
better/worse results.

Hi Dylan,

I had been told that Quicktime Pro 7 and the MPEG-2 Playback Add-on
would allow me to transcode these files so that they will not
stutter. I was hoping that somebody here had both and could test
this for me with a small file before I go ahead and buy the two.

Another suggestion was to use Toast to convert them somehow but so
far, I have not been able to make this work. It keeps reverting to
PAL format because the video file is in Pal format of course.

Is there someway to adjust the frame rate 20 29.97 in VLC or can you
recommend a better encoder that will do this for me.

I am desperate to get this sorted out as I have to have all these
files merged together in a DVD presentation within the next week.

Thanks,

Amber

VLC wil play mpeg2. If it plays in the free VLC, then it will play
in the expensive, double-quicktime purchase.

Hi Brian,

VLC will play them but that's about it. I need to be able to edit
them in iMovie (recognizable by Quicktime) and so far, I haven't been
able to find a way to do that with VLC...do you know how ?

Nope! I was responding to your above question about whether you
could be sure of the double purchase giving you capability to view in
QT. So it should do that for sure. VLC indicates thay are mpeg2
right?

I would expect that spending the $ to let you play them, would also
let you edit them, but this is Apple, and I have not the capability
to test as I'm not going to fork out the double $ to get Pro and the
codec (I have one of the iLife bundles that came with my laptop though).

VLC isn't an editor; If you have access to a XP machine, you could
try the free nanoedit utils for working with mpeg2 files that come
with a Hauppauge.com card, available for download from their support
pages for the PVR-350; it may or may not require the hardware but I
think not.

If you have flexibility in quality or window size, and really don't
wish to pay the $ for the 2 QT pieces, you *could* play them with VLC
(especially if played in a window), capture them again with the
SnapzPro demo, and have them in a regular video format that iMovie
should take. I'm not an iMovie guy but that should/might work.
Depends on how badly you wish to avoid spending $ and what you want
for quality, I guess.

HTH.

Brian
