Re: Wi-fi card for OS X on Wallstreet?

2005-05-27 Thread Adrian Carter
I used a Buffallo card with my WallStreet. Always worked fine, I made
use of the IOXperts driver which ran the card. Faultless performance
and a decent range and it worked well with external aerials as well.

Re: Limewire

2005-04-20 Thread Adrian Carter
As I see it Limewire is only as shady as the individuals motivations
for using it. Yes it can be used to download illegal music and the like
but it can also be used for perfectly legitimate purposes, such as
patch downloads for older software titles and the like and non
copyrighted images. There is also the ability for creative users to
share stuff they have created themselves etc.

I personally find it the best of the bunch in terms of P2P clients.

Re: Lombard freeze was: replaced HD no modem

2005-03-25 Thread Adrian Carter
Isn't there a reset button on the Lombard, I think its located with the
ports at the back (I've never used a Lombard, my WallStreet was similar
but it was a key combo to do a heavy reset). Hold the reset button in
for ten seconds and then see what happens.

Ideally I think the battery should be removed for this procedure, there
should be a catch under the front of the laptop (front left) which
slides forward, this should make the battery pop out (I'm basing this
again on my experience with a WallStreet model but I think the
principle is similar, if I'm wrong someone please step in and correct
me).

Re: Lombard freeze was: replaced HD no modem

2005-03-25 Thread Adrian Carter
Sometimes the power management settings get a little messed up, these
are to the best of my knowledge stored on a dedicated chip which looks
after things like battery life and so forth.

One of the consequences of the this happening can be a machine locking
in sleep mode.

In terms of removing the battery, flip the machine over so you are
looking at the underside, I think you should see a moulded flap that
you can move to pop the battery out if you need to do so.

If you open Apple System Profiler the first tabbed page reads as

On this page you will see Network Overview
This will show you the Ethernet port and below it if the modem is
present you should see the modem listed as Powerbook G3 Internal 56k.

Might be an idea to run the Apple System Profiler just to get

have had to remove the CPU and put the original back in to do the
upgrade, however then simply reinstall the upgraded CPU once the

You lift the keyboard and right in front of you there is a ribbon cable

I was wondering if you had access to an external CD drive you could

Just a thought.

Powerbook Wall Street 266Mhz Problems

2005-02-07 Thread Adrian Carter
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone out there could give me a bit of advice.
My old Powerbook WallStreet 266Mhz has endured something of a hard life
but has always toiled away on my behalf relentlessly.

However recently and without warning the hinges sheared and took out
the video ribbon cable (the left hand side cable as you are facing the
machine from the front).

I sourced a pair of hinges and a replacement video cable at reasonable
cost and set about replacing them. I was very careful in replacing the
ribbon and the hinges (the ribbon is a fiddly job but I got it in place
so it rested in the intended way). However when it came to booting up
the machine the screen is still dead.

Could it be possible that in tearing the ribbon it's possible that the
screen could have been knocked out as a result. Prior to the cable
getting torn, the display was perfect and never gave me a moments
trouble. It seems as though there is no power to the screen whatsoever.
Has anyone on the list got any ideas to something I could have
disturbed during the process of stripping and rebuilding the machine.

The machine still boots on an external monitor just fine, but if at all
possible I would like to get the old thing back in working order. It's
still my favourite Powerbook.
