As I had already mentioned in my message to you earlier today, I am

Hi A.J,

This is certainly the preferred way to test your subscription to a
group - sending an on-topic message to the list to see if it shows
up. Thank you for doing so !!!

(The note below is addressed to the general list membership):

I was referring to those who are simply posting messages bearing a
single word "test" or something similar. It is quite annoying to
the list membership and not necessary at all. Just post as you would
normally. If your message doesn't show up or you receive an error
message, try subscribing again or contact one of the list nannies
(OFF-LIST please) for assistance.

If the message does show up - you know you are subscribed and have

Re: List Behaviour (Was: Moving to Google Groups)

Hello Woody,

On 25-Feb-06, at 6:09 AM, woodyduncan wrote:

You need to unsubscribe from the MacLaunch lists if you wish to leave
them. To do so, all you have to do is look at the footer of this
message and click on the link. It will open a new e-mail for you and
from there you just hit send and presto, you'll be unsubscribed.

I have four messages this
morning from maclaunch, and none from google. Mostly
what I get from google is test, test, test.

Sorry...we have asked people not to send test messages to the list
and they continue to do so.
There is not much we can do about it at this point except continue to
ask people not to send test messages to the group. As Dan Knight
recently noted, test messages waste bandwidth and are frustrating to
the list membership as a whole. Just post your comments to the
group - if they don't show up, contact one of the list nannies for
assistance - OFF LIST and we will respond ASAP.

Also, Why all this talk about who said what that was inappropriate
back when ?

Unfortunately, new incidents sometimes spark old discussions and
everything gets dredged up again. If it becomes abusive and/or
inappropriate, or the list nannies ask for it to stop and people
ignore those requests, they can expect to face a temporary suspension.

I was hoping for discussion of some computer
related topics. I do appreciate the time people give of themselves
to help others. But, I mostly ask questions because I'm such a
newbie at this tech stuff. I provide answers and advice on
other lists where I have a bit of experience.

I honestly appreciate the input of those members on the list who
genuinely want to use it for the purpose for which it was intended -
discussion of computer related topics. This is one of the primary
reasons that we have list nannies/managers - to oversee the groups
and isolate the disruptive few so that the rest of you can enjoy
these discussions.

Thanks for your input Woody - please keep asking questions,

Amber Robey

2006-02-19 Thread Amber Robey
I would like to thank everybody who contributed to my original thread
regarding the MPEG playback and converting all these British video
clips into Quicktime format.

It turned out that the ffmpegX software worked incredibly well once I
got it set up properly. It immediately converted the clips to DV
format and I was then able to import the videos directly into iMovie
- great quality too.

Thanks again !!!

I had just been hoping there was some freeware that would at least

VLC wil play mpeg2. If it plays in the free VLC, then it will play

Ah, there is you problem. You cannot mix 25fps (PAL) with 29.97fps
(NTSC) on a DVD or within a single video file. You will need to
transcode the PAL material up to NTSC framerate. This can introduce
the "stuttering" you were speaking of earlier. There's not really
much of a way around it, though. Try using a couple of different
encoders and make sure that you set the output framerate to 29.97
before hitting any "encode" buttons.

Hi Dylan,

I had been told that Quicktime Pro 7 and the MPEG-2 Playback Add-on
would allow me to transcode these files so that they will not
stutter. I was hoping that somebody here had both and could test
this for me with a small file before I go ahead and buy the two.

Another suggestion was to use Toast to convert them somehow but so
far, I have not been able to make this work. It keeps reverting to
PAL format because the video file is in Pal format of course.

Is there someway to adjust the frame rate 20 29.97 in VLC or can you
recommend a better encoder that will do this for me.

I am desperate to get this sorted out as I have to have all these
files merged together in a DVD presentation within the next week.

Thanks,

Hello Frank,

A temporary ban on the LEM lists is normally never more than 72
hours. 10 months sounds more like a permanent ban unless you were
asked to apologize and/or agree to abiding by list rules and refused
to do so. This could result in the ban being kept in place.

Those permanently banned may or may not be given a fresh start on the
Google Groups list - Dan Knight will have the final word on that
though. Temporary bans will normally be over by the time we are
completely moved over to Google Groups.

Hi David,

Thanks - I spent a couple hours on the phone with Apple on Saturday -
very frustrating but it eventually got sorted out.

I am definitely going to be speaking to the Manager at the store
tomorrow too. It seems this service tech is the only one who works
in the service department so there is nobody there above him. He
reports to the store manager.

I do not want this service tech working on my Powerbook any further
though given what has transpired thus far. I just don't trust him
with it anymore. I am going to take it to another service provider
that Apple has already talked to. The store called me after Apple
talked to them and informed me that they will make arrangements to
have it fixed. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Geoffrey,

Thanks for your reply. I have located another service center and it
appears they will be dealing with it now.

As for the keyboard, this guy really did a poor job of installing
it. It does not appear to be seated properly like the original one
was and protrudes very noticeably on the right side and bottom.

What a pain in the neck !! I hope Apple deals appropriately with
this guy - not only for telling me to not call them about any repairs
he was doing but for doing such a poor job of the installation and
not even bothering to test it before returning it to me !!

Faulty keyboard ?

2006-02-11 Thread Amber Robey
I just had my 15" AL PB keyboard replaced at a local Apple authorized
repair center. My other keyboard was backlit and was being replaced
as it was defective (i.e. caps lock did not work properly, keys were
not striking properly).

However, when I got home and started using it in a less well lit
room, I noticed that a number of the keys are not backlit at all.
i.e. various letter keys on either end, almost all the number keys
and all the directional keys on the bottom right.

I called the place it had just been installed and asked if he had
tested the backlighting.
He said "why would I bother testing it - it's a brand new keyboard"
and then said "the keys all work don't they ? like they all type the
right letter or symbol?" I replied yes and he said "well, it's not
exactly a priority for me to fix it if they just don't light up..does
it really matter ?"

Anyway, I honestly find this really irritating as I now have to
leave my PB with him again for an entire day and he said he doesn't
think he can fit me in for a few days now.

I am not sure how these backlit keyboards are installed - is this
likely a fault in the way he put it in or possibly something
defective with the keyboard itself ? It is all being repaired under
Applecare so wondering if I should request another keyboard
instead ? Any suggestions ?

Re: Warning messages

Ben,

I was not sure if it was the usual LEM bounce messages you were
getting or something different, which is why I asked you to send me one.

As everyone else has said though, if it is from the LEM list/
Maclaunch server, you can safely set up a junk mail filter and ditch
them all without consequence. You will not be trounced off the
list. I never have been.

This problem should be resolved when we move to the new Google Groups
though.

Hello Woody,

First - congrats on your triplet grandkids !!
Second - regarding the iPod - whenever you plug your iPod into your
Powerbook, it will be automatically updated to include any songs or
playlists you have added to your iTunes library since your last
update. Remember that the iPod has a hard drive so, like your
Powerbook, you just add to the items already on there each time you
update as opposed to completely overwriting them.

I hope this helps,

Amber

PS. It is a good idea to back up your iTunes library on a disk or
external hard drive from time to time.

Re: OT /Note to list...

2006-02-02 Thread Amber Robey

Dear G-Books list members,

Listen everybody - I am not trying to make things difficult for any
you. I am honestly just trying to keep the list running smoothly
and enforce the LEM list rules. That's all. I volunteered for this
position because I really enjoy the lists and just wanted to
contribute a little more by overseeing them and taking a more active
role and keeping them on track.

However, I have been sent very rude, abusive and even threatening
off-list notes, particularly in the past 2-3 weeks. I am honestly
quite stunned by how aggressive and nasty they have become.

I am sorry if I have upset or angered you in my attempt to oversee
the list. It was certainly not my intent. I know you all have
preferences for the way you post and I am not telling you what to
post - simply trying to enforce the list rules as they are and as I
have been asked to do so.

We have the rules in place to make the messages easier for everybody
to read and enjoy, particularly those who have to use text readers.

Please just take a breath before you send me abusive notes. I am a
real person and I do find them offensive and hurtful. If you are
angry about something I have done, please write me
(decently - not abusively) off-list and tell what is bothering you so
we can discuss it. I assure you that I will do my best to
understand what your concerns are and see if we can come to some
agreement as to how to resolve them. I would at least appreciate the
opportunity to try anyway.

In the meantime, I will certainly try to be more flexible and hear
what you are all saying about the rules. Maybe some changes are
necessary.

Thank you,

Amber

big black patches in iDVD

2006-02-02 Thread Amber Robey

Hi,

I am just wondering if any of you have had any problems with iDVD in
iLife 06. I was trying to burn a DVD project that I created in
iMovie and immediately after opening iDVD, got all these large black
boxes/patches all over my PB screen. They covered the menu bar and
over half of the screen.

I quit iDVD and opened again - same thing. Went into preferences and
moved the iDVD one to the desktop then restarted. Seemed okay but
then 5 minutes later when I was working on the project, the same
patches appeared.

I am not sure what to do at this point. Just wondered if anybody
else has had the same experience?

bad pixel counts and Applecare

2006-01-28 Thread Amber Robey
It appears that I now have several bad pixels on my Powerbook.
Coincidentally, Applecare had already told me to take it in to have
the latch assembly (the one on the LCD panel) replaced, as well as
the keyboard.

However, when I took it in for the service guy to check it in and
verify the condition of the computer, he pointed out that there were
several dead pixels (mostly full off/Black) on the screen and that it
may qualify for the entire LCD panel to be replaced.

I was just wondered if anybody has had Apple authorize this before -
how many bad pixels do you normally have to have for them to approve
a complete screen replacement ?

putting recording on PB

2006-01-20 Thread Amber Robey

I would appreciate some suggestions on how to do the following:

I am canceling my regular phone service to have the digital phone
service installed this weekend.
I have a couple of important messages that I HAVE to save from my
voicemail and I am wondering how to do it.

I tried using the speakerphone to play the messages and then my iPod
(with iTalk attachment) to record it but the sound quality is
abysmal. So, I am wondering if anybody could possibly offer some
recommendations ?

Thanks,
