Re: system backups

2006-01-12 Thread Art Richard

Sandra,

With OS-X just backing up your drive may not give you a drive that
you can start from (which you could do prior to OS-X). Here are ways
to make a backup OS-X drive that can be a startup disk:

1. Use Carbon Copy Cloner, or

2. Use Tri-Backup, or

3. Use Apple Disk Utility (with care) as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility.
b. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
c. Click on the Restore tab in the main window.
d. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
e. Select the backup volume from the left side list and drag it into
the Destination entry field.
f. Check the box to Erase Destination (if you have not already formated
the backup drive).
g. Double check that you have the proper drives selected and then click
on the Restore button.

h. Go get a cup of coffee; this will take a while.

Once you have a backup drive capable of being used as a startup
disk, you and do the same thing to copy the backup drive to your new
internal drive.

Re: Lombard Wireless Woes

2006-01-03 Thread Art Richard

Caleb,

When you encounter a web page that has problems in Safari it is
because the page creater did not follow the standards (Windows and
Explorer do not follow the standards, Safari does). There is a
solution:

In Safari, you can use the Debug menu to display web pages as if you
were using Explorer. If you do not see the Debug menu item on your
menu bar do the following:

Go to Terminal and type in this line:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

Then Debug will appear on your Safari menu line. Click on Debug and
you will see a menu item Open Page With. Moving the curser to that
entry will display Explorer. Click on that and you should be able to
see the page as if you were using Explorer.

If you want to remove the Debug menu item, go to terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0

Re: repair a yo-yo AC adapter?

You should be aware that there is a small resistor inside the computer

Re: art teacher mac tools

The TV output on a Mac PowerBook is a round multi-pin connector for
S-video. If your TV has an S-video input, you can get an S-video to
S-video cable and you are in business. If your TV only has separate
video and sound input connectors, you need a cable with a converter.

Re: OS X on G3 Series PowerBook

2005-09-13 Thread Art Richard

Paul,

There are no stupid questions, just questions that failed to be
asked. I had looked at XPostFacto before and it states that it is not
for the G3 Series PowerBook. Just this morning, I said what the heck
and I tried using XPostFacto to see if that would help. When i ran it,
it indicated a problem with my install (OS 10.2) CD. I then ran Tech
Tools Pro and found that there were some bundle bits bad on that CD.
It is possible that this has been my problem all along, although I
thought that the system verified the install CD before starting
installation. I am in the process of obtaining a replacement OS 10.2
install disk. I hope the new disk solves the problem.

OS X on G3 Series PowerBook

2005-09-12 Thread Art Richard
I would like to thank all of you who responded to my request for
information on installing OS X on my G3 Series PowerBook.

After trying all of the suggestions (remove added memory, remove
battery, etc.) and verifying that my PowerBook was OK (Tech Tools Pro,
Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior), I still am unable to install OS X
(10.2). I tried many times over a period of three days, with the
system freezing; sometimes while reporting 45 minutes remaining,
sometimes with less than a minute remaining, and one getting to the
point where it completed the first disk, only to get the message,
installation requires you restart which resulted in the install disk
going back to the beginning when I restarted, rather than completing
the installation. I suppose I will just have to live with OS 9.2.

Laurent,

Thanks for the suggestion. I reseated all of the PC board connections
inside my Powerbook, made sure the screws were tight holding the heat
shield against the CPU, and then put spacers under the outside of the
case and set-up a fan blowing air around and under the unit to keep it
cool. I then attempted to install OS X. In several tries, it froze-up
each time; the best was at 6 minutes remaining on the installation. It
appears that I really will remain on OS-9.2, which has worked very well
and never freezes-up.

Jim,

I appreciate your input. I don't know if waiting and trying to Load
OS X later will do much good. I have been trying to load OS X for
almost a year, trying every few months. Recently, I upgraded my disk
drive from 4 Gigs to 12 Gigs, and formatted the disk into two
partitions, the lower one being 8 Gigs. Of course, I will keep trying,
but I don't have much confidence that it will ever work. The only OS X
system disks I have are OS 10.2. These disks loaded OK on my G3 Blue
White 400 Mhz Mac, so I think that the disks are OK.

Define without success. That's a Lombard, probably, if you're using
the official Apple designation and should work with OS X 10.3 and
lower.

Is the install failing? Does it not boot from the disk? Does it just
not run?

I will tell you that 256 is a very minimal amount of RAM, but 10.2
