Re: I just ordered a iBook/SideTrack
I can't really give you any advice on accessories, but if you plan on using the trackpad at all then I suggest that you download sidtrack. Went to the URL given and, reading about SideTrack, came across this warning right up front. NOTE: SideTrack is presently a public beta. As a beta release SideTrack may contain bugs and could potentially cause a kernel panic. Please exercise appropriate caution when testing SideTrack and be sure to read the FAQ for information on how to disable SideTrack if it causes problems. QUESTION: Have List subscribers who have used SideTrack encountered kernel panics? Last thing we want to do is to introduce into our systems a nice-to-have item like SideTrack only to suffer unwanted problems. bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: DW or TTP
FWIW, I have had both and would strongly urge you to get Disk Warrior. As Andrew said: DW has always been unique, i.e. it addresses a level of the file system that no other utility works with, and like many others I can report it has several times recovered disks that otherwise seemed hopeless. DW is a one-trick pony but it does that one trick *exceedingly* well, better than anyone else. TT Pro has lots of *seemingly* useful bells and whistles that I just never needed or used. Re: OS 10.3.5
Be sure to boot off your Panther CD first, and repair the Boot Disk, followed by repairing disk permissions. If the suggestions I have seen proffered time and again at other sites like MacFixIt, etc., are accurate, you should *not* repair permissions using disk utility *while* booted up on a Systems CD. The argument is that your Systems CD is OS 10.x , whereas your machine is now running OS X.y, and permissions have changed with the change in OS. Cannot Restore System from CDs
Just got a new 14 G4 iBook. Also have an older 12 Dual-USB G3 iBook. On the G3, Keychain has been driving my crazy for months. All efforts to get it to run properly failed so I decided to wipe the HD clean and re-install/restore the system software. Then came the idea: why not use the CDs that came with the G4, because the OS on them was 10.3.3. If I started with the G3 restore software, I would have to start from OS 10.1.0 and work forward, using Software Update and it would take me forever. Using the G4 CDs would save me lots of downloads. Seems that was a BAD IDEA! First I backed up everything on the G3 to an external FireWire HD, using Disk Utility's Restore function. (I'm not totally brain dead, folks). Then popped in an OS X CD and started up the G3, went to Disk Utility and erased the hard drive. Then restarted, using the first of the two G4 Software Install disks which the G3 chewed on for awhile, then spit ! out. Then popped in the second one and again the G3 spit it out. So, admitting defeat, I restarted from CD 1 of the G3's original Software Restore disks. Here's where I got completely stumped: I get a window in the middle of my screen and no menu bar across the top of the desktop. Window is labeled: ASR Two boxes across the top. One says iBook HD Disk 1.dmg. Other says: Apple Software Restore completely erases the contents of your hard drive before restoring the original contents, including the original system software, etc. In the middle is an icon labeled Destination Disk and it's labeled Restore Image To the right are choices for Eject Disk and Switch Disk Hitting either Eject Disk or Switch Disk simple switches back and forth between Restore Image and iBook Restore CD. As you switch back and forth, the message below says one then the other cannot be restored. You are left with one choice, QUIT, as RESTORE, the other option, is grayed out. Any suggestions re what to try next, folks??? Many thanks, bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Getting that message saying that emails from the list are bouncing back to B-Books. Hmmm. . .hope this doesn't keep happening. Pray, folks, pray, that what is happening to the iBook list doesn't happen to this one! To wit, I had to unsubscribe because the server was sending multiple copies of either the Digest version or individual emails to every subscriber. Virtual Network Computing
Can anyone offer _any_ suggestions for a fix on this one??? Two Mac computers. Both running latest version of Panther and latest versions of Share My Desktop (server) and Chicken of the VNC (client) software trying to set up a virtual network connection. I have a DSL modem connected to a LinkSys wired router which is in turn connected to my Desktop BW G3. When I run SMD, the other party (running Chicken) can see my desktop and manipulate objects on it using her mouse. When we change over, with me running Chicken and she running SMD, we simply cannot connect. I get a variety of alert message from Authentication Failed to Connection Refused. We both have our firewalls off and the right ports enabled to do this. It used to work for me _before_ I introduced the router into this equation so I suspect it is something to do with that router but don't know exactly which setting I ought to be tampering with to get this thing working. Re: annoying desktop file
This is a bit long. I've patched this info together, over a year or two, from posts I've seen on the subject. Maybe worth your saving for the days when _you_ can't delete a file/folder/etc. I've left in the info on quitting programs that won't quit as well as trashing items that refuse to be trashed. For the first time, last week, the only thing that would delete a file that was interrupted mid-download was the dragging the file to TexEdit solution. Hope folks find this useful. Bob TRASH/KILL SOLUTIONS First look for help at Randy Singer's page: http://www.macattorney.com/panther.html DELETE SOLUTIONS -- 1. Open Terminal 2. Type sudo rm -rf (or try just sudo rm) 3. Add a space after the f, then drag the item you want deleted to the terminal so that its path is automatically entered. 4. Press return, type in your password then hit return again. Other method to try is trashing while holding down the Shift+Option keys and Control Clicking on the trash can. OR..create folder, put offending item in folder, move folder to trash, empty trash holding down Shift + Option keys while emptying trash. -- Another method for getting rid of a PDF or text file that is being used, is to drag the file icon to TextEdit. In TextEdit choose Select All and then hit the Delete key and Save. Close the file. Now you should be able to trash it - Reboot in OS 9, drag items to be trashed out of your OS X trash, put them into a new folder and drag that folder onto your OS 9 partition. Then, the next time you re-boot in OS 9, you can drag that folder to the OS 9 Trash, hold down the Option key and empty the trash, and they will be gone forever. --- Finally, try FileVaporizer (get from VersionTacker. It seems to trash just about everything. What FileVaporizer does to files which you wish to erase is to first write over them with random data and then delete them, thus making them unrecoverable. http://www.geneffects.com/filevaporizer/index.html ***KILL SOLUTIONS*** -- Try to quit from Process Viewer by 1. Laundh Process Viewer (Utilities folder) 2. Locate App. you can't quit in listing to left 3. Click to highlight 4. Hit Command+option+Q 5. In resulting dialog choose Quit 6. If that doesn't do it, repeat process but this time, choose Force Quit. --- 1. Launch terminal and type top then Return key 2. Note the PID number of the App that won't quit. 3. Open a new Terminal window (Command + N) 4. Type kill PID # if no luck try 5. kill -9 pid# -- If you hold both the option key and the control key while clicking an application's icon in the Dock, the force quit command will be available no matter what the program's status. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... More on Battery Life
This is from Battery University site. All personal computers (and some other electronic devices) contain a battery for memory back up. This battery is commonly a small non-rechargeable lithium cell, which provides a small current when the device is turned off. The PC uses the battery to retain certain information when the power is off. These are the BIOS settings, current date and time, as well as resource assignment for Plug and Play systems. Storage does shorten the service life of the backup battery to a few years. Some say 1-2 years. By keeping the computer connected to the main, albeit turned off, a battery on the PC motherboards should be good for 5-7 years. A PC should give the advanced warning when battery gets low. A dead back-up battery will wipe out the volatile memory and erase certain settings. After battery is replaced, the PC should again be operational. I have a Dual-USB iBook. Didn't know I had an internal battery. Anyone have the URL of a site that might show one how to install a new one??? TIA, Bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Keychain Problems
My brother just bought a refurbished ibook from apple. He loves it but he says that keychain access keeps popping up and asking for his password... He types it in and it doesn't9t work... Is there a way to fix this? His password works everywhere else. Thanks, shane Shane - I've been having Keychain problems with my G3 Dual-USB iBook for a few weeks now and let me tell you...it is gigantic pain in the rear. This is a really complex problem and there's no way to reduce it to a simple answer. My problem is connected with Safari and Keychain. Launch Safari, go to any Apple site, Safari crashes and the Keychain won't function unless I restart. Everything then runs fine until I launch Safari again and it repeats all over again. Go to Apple.com Support tab Discussion tab and do a search for Keychain in the Discussion groups. You'll get tons of info...sadly, no one, even Apple, seems to have come up with a solution to date. An example of one post follows. Good luck, bob RE: Is this a problem with Keychain or what??? I've tried everything mentioned here and still have a keychain problem after installing the security updates. I've been using Mail for a long time with no problem. After the 4/5/04 Security Update I kept getting message from my mail server that my password was rejected...maybe 1 out of 3 times. After installing the 5/24/04 Security Update, my mail server rejects my password every time. I run my own mail server on another Mac here in the office, so I know the problem is not on that end. I can send mail, and my server sees me log on, bit Mail gives me The server rejected your password message. I have no other problems with keychains...all my internet secure sites work fine...it's just Mail. Here's what I've tried so far: Repaired Permissions Repaired Keychain Access Deleted Mail preferences Deleted Keychain preferences Ran Diskwarrior to repair directory Deleted the Keychain entry for my Mail server Dragged my Keychain file out of my home folder and restarted with new keychain.same problem Finally, I downloaded Eudora and set it to bypass Keychain, and it downloaded my mail just fine. This tells me there's no problem on the server end. Help! I don't want to use Eudora, I want to use Mail. If I delete my account in Mail and set it up again, it says it will delete all my mailboxes. RE - Carbon Copy Cloner
To the best of my knowledge, CCC is the only SW that will make a bootable image of an OS X start up disk. You can also use it to make periodic back-ups of said bootable disks. Best George Just got back from vacation and read the above. There is indeed another way to make a bootable image of an OS X start up disk, at least in OS X.3.3. I am always surprised so few people know about it. Launch Disk Utility Click on a HD Icon so the tabs (First Aid/Erase/Restore) appear Choose Restore tab Drag the icon of the HD for which you wish to make a bootable image into the Source Window.
