Pismo yo-yo adapter in Europe

2004-10-14 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I can't read the fine print on th back. Will a yo-yo adapter from the
USA work on 220v and 50hz?

As far as I can tell this is the basic yo-yo adapter with the silver
apple logo on top.

I know I need plug adapters if the electricity part works.

Brian,
Download the freeware program called CCC which stand for Carbon Copy
Cloner. This great utility will greatly decrease the amount of time it
will take to move Panther and everything else to your new drive. You
can this either via a firewire drive or through Target Disk Mode. CCC
can be found here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

I was under the impression that you shouldn't use CCC to move a
system BETWEEN machines - that at the deep and invisible level the OS
is hooked into a specific machine after an install and to simply move
it to another model (in this case an iMac 500 to a Pismo 400) things
may basically work but that I would be asking for trouble in the long
run.

Have I heard wrong?

iMac Ram in a Pismo?

2004-06-05 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I have a 512K RAM module in an iMac 500 mhz DV I am getting ready to
sell. I need to upgrade my Pismo from its current 192 to at least
640. Can I pull the 512 from the iMac (I think it was actually PC133
RAM - which was irrelevant to the iMac) and put it in my Pismo? What
research I have done on the web is giving me mixed signals so I turn
to this list.

Will RAM from that iMac (same RAM as used in the Cube among other
Macs) always work in my Pismo? Never work with my Pismo? Work under
certain conditions (e.g. a certain slot)?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: Pismo booting OS X from external Firewire

2004-05-10 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
Laurent wrote:
As another lister replied, yes and yes. The only thing you might want to
consider is whether you'll be spending more time in OS X or OS 9. If you
think you'll be spending more time in OS X, then it would be better to put
OS X onto the internal drive and OS 9 on the FW drive. With virtual memory
on all the time, you'll probably get better performance if OS X is running
off the internal drive. If you will just use it from time to time, then it
doesn't really matter.
Just my $0.02

For the time being I will be in OS 9 more. For most of what I do,
that is plenty fast.

The other issue is that the FW drive is 40 gigs and the Pismo
internal is only 10. From everything I have read I need to give
Panther some room to breathe. I also only have 192 megs of RAM in
the Pismo. AS soon as I have the $$$ I am going to add more RAM and
get a bigger internal hard drive. If I can get my OS X setup off my
iMac and onto the FW drive (easily doable according to answers here),
I can then sell the iMac to generate some money towards the Pismo
improvements.

Thanks!

Pismo booting OS X from external Firewire?

2004-05-07 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I would like to shift my OS X usage from my iMac to my PowerBook
Pismo. Until I get a chance to upgrade the hard drive to something
larger, I am willing to live with operating in OS X off an external
Firewire drive(and OS 9 off the internal drive). Will a Pismo boot
from an external Firewire drive with OS X on it (specifically
Panther)?

If yes, a follow up question is if I can use Carbon Copy Cloner to
simply move my present OS X to the Firewire drive and then boot from
there.

Auto adapter for 3400 on a Pismo??

2004-04-20 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I have a new-to-me Pismo 400 mhz that is replacing a PB 3400. The
added battery life is nice on the Pismo but there are still times an
auto adapter on a long car trip would be better.

I have a Lind Auto Adapter that works fine on my 3400. The part that
plugs into the PowerBook seems to fit the Pismo, although not nearly
as snugly as the yo-yo adapter plug.

I guess the main issue is the output of the Auto Adpater to the PB.
It is listed as out put of 24V and 2A (it is hard to read clearly
but the yo-yo adapter looks like it is an output of 24V and 1.875A.
So I guess it is an issue of the extra 0.125A).

the model is APA-24-SP.

I don't want to fry my Pismo either short term or long term, so any
help on this would be appreciated.

Re: Pismo ethernet auto sensing

2004-04-07 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
-BEGIN QUOTED MATERIAL--
The OP was asking about needing a crossover cable. Lots of people also
refer to that as auto-sensing. According to Apple's document 42717, the
Pismo would need a crossover. The TiBook and later doesn't. Here's a
list: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42717
---END QUOTED MATERIAL--
That's indeed what I was asking and I got the answer I needed. Thanks.

Sorry if I used the wrong terminology in auto-sensing but that was
partly why I added the further explanation.

Pismo ethernet auto sensing??

2004-04-05 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
Is the ethernet port on a G3 PowerBook (Pismo) auto sensing or did
that come only to more recent PowerBooks?

If you don't know what I mean by auto-sensing, I mean can it set up
an ethernet network to another Mac without a hub, switch or router -
by use of an ethernet cable only - and it doesn't matter if the
cable is normal or cross-over? An auto sensing PowerBook would be
able to tell and adjust accordingly.

Pismo basic questions

2004-03-29 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I just got a new-to-me Pismo and have some introductory questions. I
have been using a 3400 for the last couple years and a 520c before
that.

QUESTION 1:
It came with a yo-yo power adapter but the plug that connects it to
the Pismo seems to go with difficulty, like it is a tight fit. Is
this normal and is there anything about this I should worry about or
be especially careful of?

QUESTION 2:
Putting CDS or DVDs into the DVD module also seems to be a tight fit
over the spindle. What about that?

QUESTION 3:
The DVD tray, when fully extended, seems to be a bit flimsy,
especially if I am applying pressure to get a CD or DVD over the
spindle (see question 2). Normal? Precautions?

QUESTION 4:
There don't seem to be any feet on the bottom of the Pismo. Should there be?
Thanks for any help as I get up and running with my new baby.
