Firewire horrors: update

2006-01-24 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hi Listas

tried putting one of the recalcitrant disks inside the Pismo: still
no joy (See http://sites.ecosse.net/mycelium/forothers/
forothersMain.html#update)

So the options seem to be:
1: give up on Firewire and find a USB2 PC card that works in the
Pismo, then use the 40GB HD in the USB2 case as a back-up device

2: find a firewire PC card that works in the Pismo

3: cobble the 40GB into an expansion bay module.

What do you all think? Can anyone how suggest item 3 is done and
supply me with an appropriate EBM?

many thanks

Bruce

Re: firewire horrors

2006-01-20 Thread Bruce Ryan

Dear G-bookers

First, sorry to all (especially Howard) who got eye-strain from my
colour-scheme

In reply to Brian:

Are the external cases FW 400 or 800?

400

Have you tried a FW card in the PCMCIA slot?

not yet - can anyone lend/sell me one?

In reply to John
setting 30GB as slave (it had been master) no joy
40GB was acble select: setting as master or slave doesn't help (in
master mode, LED is amber. All other times it's green)

In reply to Arizona Bruce
• resetting PRAM no joy
• old FW enclosure got its power via a cable from a USB port on the
mac to a mini-USB port on the enclosure. (I have tried swapping those
too - no joy)
• new enclosure is bus-powered enough to spin up on the Pismo and to
both spin up and mount on other macs. It did come with an external
power supply - but that doesn't help it mount on the Pismo.

Someone else suggested backing up my data and then trying on of the
drives inside the Pismo. I won't have time to try that until next
week but will let you know how I get on.

Many thanks to all

Firewire horrors

2006-01-19 Thread Bruce Ryan

HI folks

there's a Bruce-and-his-Pismo shaggy dog story at http://
sites.ecosse.net/mycelium/forothers/forothers.html. I thought it was
too long for the lists.

If you've read it
• Gbookers: what can I do to get at least one of the external drives,
when in the new firewire case, mounting on the Pismo?
•Swapsters: can anyone sell me a PCMCIA USB2.0 card that is known to
work in a Pismo under OSX? Please advise total price, including
shipping to UK. Please also let me know how soon it can arrive

Many thanks for wading through my verbiage

road warrior?

2005-09-09 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hi Gang

Have any of you ever used a cellphone with a Pismo (or any other
Powerbook) to go online out in the wilds whether there's no wireless,
phone jack or LAN point? If so, please let me know how it's done.
What phones, software and connections between the two did you use?

I have both 10.3.9 and 9.1 on my Pismo.

Many thanks

PC card in PCMCIA slot?

2005-08-04 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hi G-bookers

Seen a lot of mentions of DOS/PC cards that you
can stick in the PCI slots on a desktop mac but
never tried one (instead, used VirtualPC 3·0
whenever I needed to emulate a PC).

Now I've moved full-time to a laptop (400MHz
Pismo) and OSX, I find VPC is abominably slow. So
has anyone ever seen a PCMCIA card that will make
like a PC in my Pismo?

cheers

quicktime 7·0·1 on Pismo

2005-08-04 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hey Dan G-bookers

I have a Pismo 400MHz, 768 RAM, 40G HD running OS 10.3.9. Will I have
any problems updating from Quicktime 6.5.2 to Quicktime 7.0.1?
Will it be an improvement? I have noticed my Quicktime Player to be
somewhat slow at times, but that may just be my slow computer.

I haven't noticed any performance difference
moving up to 7·0·1 under 10·3·9 on my 400MHz
Pismo. I think there's something about if you
already have the 'pro' (i.e paid for) version of
Quicktime and upgrade to this version, then
you'll have to pay again to get the 'pro' version
of 7·0·1.

interested to hear how you get on

I got dem ol' Kosmic Pismo blues again mama

2005-04-08 Thread Bruce Ryan
Dear Listers
I seem to have been a bit unlucky when buying a Pismo on eBay. I hope
you don't mind the following shaggy dog story.

Firstly the DVD drive died within hours of receipt of the wee beauty.
I bought a replacement mechanism but I can't put it in the dead
drive's housing because I can't undo two of the screws. However, I
was given an intact 24X CD-R drive and so I can put the DVD drive
into its housing. This seems a waste. DOes anyone think I can drill
the stuck screw out without damaging the housing beyond use?

Next the power cable died. Replacement was easy and cheap, so I got
as far as installing and configuring OSX, classic and other software.

During a visit to England the power cables stopped delivering power
to the Pismo. I was able to keep it charged using my mum's clamshell
iBook cables. However, I then used it quite a lot, such that there
was maybe 15 minutes left on the battery. Thinking that if the power
cable was new then the fault must be in the yo-yo (the old one had
had issues) I bought a brand-new one.

By the time it arrived, I'd also received a bigger HD and so had
installed that, following the Apple Service Manual's take-apart
methods. I did have some trouble taking out the processor card
because the wee plastic tag you have to pull on to extract this had
torn before I received the Pismo. In the end, I used a pair of
needle-nosed pliers to grasp the remnant of the tag and pull it up.

I also put a 512MB RAM card that had been in the upper slot in the
lower slot and put the 128MB card that had been in the lower slot
into the upper slot (to make it easier to replace this when I can
afford more RAM).

I'm pretty sure that I reassembled everything properly. (It's
possible that I didn't seat the processor card properly when I first
reassembled it.) However, I can't start the Pismo using either the
old nor the new yo-yo. The battery is completely flat but so long as
the power cables are delivering power, should this matter?

I can think of the following possible reasons for it not starting up
* I've damaged the processor card
* I've damaged the I/O logic board it connects to
* when taking out or replacing the hard drive assembly, I've damaged
the inverter board or soundcard (which also appears to be where the
power switch is connected. I can't see any damaged cables and I'm
loath to try to take it apart further to investigate.)
* the power port has been damaged by dodgy power cables.
* I've damaged the hard drive cable

I know both of the old hard disk and the new hard disk are OK - when
put into a USB enclosure, they mount on my G4/400 desktop.

Any thoughts on how I can diagnose the fault(s) or should I go to my
nearest Apple Service provider?

thanks in advance
Bruce Ryan

external DVD drive on Pismo

2005-03-24 Thread Bruce Ryan
Hi G-bookers
I have an external USB DVD drive (the original DVD drive from my
Sawtooth in a cheap'n'cheerful USB 2 enclosure). I can use it to play
DVDs on the Sawtooth but not on my Pismo.

I can think of two possible reasons:
* Apple DVD player doesn't want to know about external drives.
* This drive is too new for OS9.2.2 itself.
Am I talking garbage? Is there a way of getting the Pismo to play
DVDs from this external drive under OS9.2.2?

many thanks

monitor stand for Bookendz docking station for PIsmo

2005-03-21 Thread Bruce Ryan
HI G-bookers
Just got myself a second-hand Bookendz docking station for my beloved
Pismo. A couple of issues and queries I'd beg your collective advice
about:
* ethernet connection is flaky. Will be worked around by going
wireless. Twould be nice to sort it though - any thoughts?

* if and when I can afford in a processor upgrade (drooling at the
thought of 1GHz!), does anyone recommend using a tilt-stand with a
fan to blow cool air onto the underside of the Pismo. Has anyone
tried a combination of a Bookendz and a fanned tilt-stand? If so, was
it good for you?

* In the meantime, I'm thinking of getting a monitor stand so that an
external (flatscreen) monitor can sit above the closed, docked Pismo.
If you scroll to the bottom of this page of Dell accessories you'll
see the sort of thing I mean:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/topics/products/guides/latit?c=ukcs=ukbsdt1l=ens=bsd~section=004

Do you have any recommendations for buying such a gizmo or is it time
to flex my woodwork skills?

thanks
Bruce

Re: Pismo wireless

2005-03-09 Thread Bruce Ryan
Thanks Mark and other Bruce
Will OSX be as slow as I fear, even with the bigger hard disk and more
  RAM?
OSX on my Pismo with a 400MHz G3 and 512 RAM was fast.
With the bluechip upgrade to 900MHz and 1 GB RAM it is even better, but even
at 400MHz, it was fast enough.
snip
Actually 10.3 is about as fast on mine as OS 9. Not bad at all. The 128
megs is a big issue.
Particularly if the disk is 5400 RPM, the Pismo should run OS X quite
usably.
The Pismo, in fact, feels roughly about the same speed as the Beige
doing most things; it's got a PC100 bus which helps a fair bit.
I think the current drive is a stock 4400 rpm.
The current 128MB RAM is PC100. Not sure about
the speed of the 30GB drive or the 512MB RAM
which are on their way. Eventual plan is to max
it out: see
http://www.livejournal.com/users/myceliumme/29829.html#cutid2

Nope. 802.11g drivers are not available under OS 9. While the card
itself is 802.11b compatible, that doesn't mean it uses Airport
drivers.
Oh well - and thanks for the explanation. I live
less than 500 metres from my work. The buffalo
card claims it may be able to achieve
connectivity (albeit very slow) at this sort of
distance. I'll post any positive results here
and in LiveJournal

I wonder what are you doing that's making the G4/400 feel slow?
Happy to answer in detail off-list. Short answer
is AFAIK nothing that **should** slow it

(or what you're comparing it to
Short answer The same G4/400 running OS 9·1,
although I realise I may not be comparing exactly
like-with-like.

Thanks all round

Pismo wireless

2005-03-08 Thread Bruce Ryan
Dear Listers
Can I tell you a shaggy dog story and then ask for some advice,
please? (If not, please just delete this mail!)

Got myself a 400MHz Pismo recently. Love it to bits for the look
alone but I want to go wireless with it. (I have a wireless router
that's accessed by my flatmate's PC and - via ethernet - my G4/400)

Fell for an eBay advert for an 802.11g cardbus card that apparently
would work with a mac - and won the auction. Here's the rub. The
manufacturers say it will work with a mac but only under OSX. OSX is
slow enough on a G4/400MHz with 384MB RAM. I hate to think how slow
it'll be on a G3/400 with 128MB. (I do have an extra 512MB and a 30GB
hard disk arriving soon.)

So, do any of the assembled multitude have a clue if the card
(Buffalo technology WLI-CB-G54A-3) can be jinxed into working under
OS9?

Will OSX be as slow as I fear, even with the bigger hard disk and more RAM?
Is the delay in going wireless my karma for wanting to go faster than 802.11b?
Many thanks
Bruce
