Re: importing analog footage into Final Cut

2004-03-07 Thread Doug Behr
I have used used the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge to
successfully import analog video (from a VHS tape)
into iMovie. After cutting the scenes together, I was
able to output the video to analog video (taped on my
home VHS recorder because I don't have a DV recorder)
and also creat a quicktime movie of the whole thing.

It was easy to use and cheaper than buying a DV cam.

It looks like Pinnacle has discontinued making them,
but there are still some on ebay.

Electovaya PowerPad

2004-03-06 Thread Doug Behr
I too have been curious about rebuilding/replacing the
cells in my Pismo.

After all the talk about the controller chip, white
hot shooting shooting jets of lithium, I decided to
bite the bullet and buy an Electrovaya Powerpad 160.
It promises 16 hours of power on a full charge. So
far, i've used it once for 6 hrs, and there was plenty
of charge showing on the indicator.

just my $0.02.

One reason you're probably seeing less spam is that
you have a new e-mail address...

If your new address is posted on the web, it will be
only a matter of time before it is harvested and the
spam begins again.

My primary e-mail address (and about two dozen
forwarding aliases) appear all over my various web
sites. Because of this I receive about 2000 UCE per
month. I recently posted a totally fresh address (new
address, new domain, etc) on a web site for which I've
done from freelance work. I started receiving spam
and virus infected e-mails on that address within 3
weeks of it appearing on the 'net.

As far as I can tell, as long as there is e-mail,
there will be spam.

Laurent,

Is this the battery you bought?

http://www.laptops-battery.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/3/products_id/5396

It does not list the model M7318 battery (in my Pismo)
as one of the batteries it replaces (and is now also
$129). Did they used to have another battery to
replace the 7318?

Electrovaya PowerPad

2003-09-23 Thread Doug Behr
Is anyone using an Electrovaya powerpad (particularly
the 160)? with a Pismo or other G3 or G4 laptop?

my Pismo battery is pretty much useless (about 15-35
minutes per charge) and I think the hi-capacity of the
powerpad will be useful for me.

Aside from wondering what people's experiences are
with the Powerpads (use time, convenience, general
satisfaction, etc.) One more specific question, are
any 160C users powering the Powerpad with their Yo-Yo
adapters, or are you using the special electrovaya
adapter. Elecctrovaya says their adapter is necessary
with the 160C, but a local retailer has a great price
on the pad (without the adapter and tells me that I
can use my yo-yo).

I haven't gotten word back from electrovaya yet, but
wanted to see what experiences in the real world were.

Thanks.

How big is your OE messages file? Those darn things
can get out of hand if you don't compact them.

Check:HD> Documents> Microsoft User Data> Identities>
Main Identity

Or you may just want to compact the messages file
anyway (good housekeeping). Although my brain has
frozen, and I can't remember the key combo to press at
OE launch to do it.

Can anyone help jog my memory? Anyone? Bueller?

My OE messages file has gotten out of control in the
past (go away for a few days and the spam piles up)
over 1GB, and it really effected my Pismo's performance.

I've had a similar thing happen with my Pismo.

In my limited use, I've been very happy with the
Dazzle Hollywood Bridge.

I used it to convert a VHS tape to DV, edited it down

Simple to use and quality on the edited VHS was as
good as the original.

Just my personal experience. Your mileage may vary.

I tried USB/SCSI adapters from Belkin and MikroTek
(not the scanner manufacturer of similar name) when I
first bought my Pismo in 2000.

I have a Zip, SyQuest and a scanner on the SCSI bus
and no amount of SCSI voodo ever got them to work
right.

The short version of the story is that I picked up an
8100 (upgraded to G3) for $100 on e-Bay to run the
SCSI peripherals, and have the Pismo and the 8100
connected via ethernet (on a hub) to the DSL and a
Laserwriter 630.

Inelegant...but a solution.

Re: Pismo RAM recommendations

2002-12-02 Thread Doug Behr
For What it's worth, I have had mixed results with
Other World COmputing.

I have 1 GB in my Pismo that I got from them and have
was happy with the service and the RAM.

After that, I ordered a HD from them and it took over
four months to get a replacement after they initially
sent a dead unit.

A "plus one" and a "minus one" leaving me leaning
toward negative. After my last experience, I vowed
not to buy from them again, and have all taken my
hardware and software biz elsewhere.

I bought some desktop RAM from Crucial about 4 years
ago and was very happy with that
transaction...although I'd guess that their RAM is
more expensive than OWC.

Good Luck.

I had two screen problems with my Pismo in the first
year of ownership.

First one column of pixels went bad (green stripe) 6
months after getting the machine back (with a new
screen), I got 'pink screen'. Over the course of a
week it got worse and affected open documents,
desktop, drop-down menus - everything.

I had the screen replaced (again) under warranty and I
haven't had a problem since (18 months).

fingers crossed
