Tiger on Lombard via TiBook
Hey Andrew, When you mentioned that you installed Tiger from the 12 G4 to the 400mhz Lombard...did you swap hard drives or?? just curious, Ed From: Andrew [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Tiger on Lombard via TiBook ??? 15' Wallstreet
Laurent, I had to customize my Wallstreet (I grew out of the 14 inch screen almost as fast as the jeans I wore in college). It took some tinkering with the casing just to get the new screen in (lots of shaving and adding an titanium strip around the edges that aligns with the new titanium strip on the bottom panel). Mind you I was simply following the instructions of a friend. I gave it to him and I don't know how but he managed to get the video card and the video RAM up to standards enough to push this screen into working order, as well as maintaining decent backlighting. I'm not sure what else he did but he does work for Disney and they wish on a lot of stars, so who knows. Either that or I just hit the '5' key instead of '4'. I'll have to measure. :) Edward Date: Tue, 17 May 2005 15:01:14 -0400 Subject: Re: Wallstreet Tiger From: Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] On 17/05/05 14:59, Edward Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [snip!] Powerbook Wallstreet 15 PowerBook Wallstreet 15? I'm aware that the WS is ancient, the issue that I have is that I have installed Panther by removing the powerbooks hardrive and loading it into a firewire drive attached to a supported computer...after putting the HD back in the powerbook it works fine, booting into Panther with no prob...this is just odd...I can install Tiger on my iPod and boot from it! In a never ending quest to keep my Wallstreet going I attempted a Tiger install. Waterlogged wallstreet
Recently my Wallstreet was attacked by a glass of water. I took it apart and there didn't seem to be any water inside the machinebut of course, now she's dead (and I'm so depressed). If I plug it in it tries to start up, whiring while the green power light goes on...but I don't think the hard drive even starts spinning and then it shuts back down. In this process the screen doesn't light up and I have to wait a couple of hours for this to happen again (it won't start with the startup button). So the process (just to repeat) goes like this. 1. Empty battery bays. Insert power cord. 2. Startup light comes on, quick whirring sound for 2-3 second. 3. Sound stops, light goes off, and the machine is dead. 4. Repeat in an hour with same results. It doesn't seem to me like the entire machine is shot and with the wide array of parts on ebay I'm hoping someone could give me an idea on what this might beany ideas from the Wallstreet family? Thanks for the advicewhen the Wallstreet was originally watered I took it completely apart (even the PCMIA cage was out)in under 5 minutes...this may not be impressive but it was at 6am (and I'm a night owl) while my very sorry wife watched and hopedit sat for a week before I re-assembled it. I didn't find any real water but I'm guessing at this point that it's a loss due to a short. So now I'm stuck w/Gateway desktop. :( thanks again folks ed Date: Sat, 05 Jun 2004 15:08:38 -0400 Subject: Re: Waterlogged wallstreet From: Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 05/06/04 14:41, Ken at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My Reply follows quote. As a minimum, I would remove the keyboard, hard drive, processor card and disconnect as many of the ribbon cable connectors as I could reach without disassembling the computer and let it air dry for a day or so. I suspect that water has gotten into some of the connectors and is causing faulty circuits. I suppose you could use a hair dryer on it after you have done the disconnections to speed things up, just don't over heat things! There is also another unfortunate possibility. If the original poster did try to power it up before it was completely dry, it is possible that remaining water caused some shorts that could have fried some electronic components in it which could be permanently damaged, even if the PowerBook is now let to dry completely... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... In my understanding the only real difference between the G3 and G4 is the whole velocity engineie the latest OSX programs like Photoshop will take advantage of that but that most average applications probably won't justify the expensethen again if the expense isn't a major issue...wellit's always fun to tinker. ed j On Apr 4, 2004, at 2:30 PM, G-Books wrote: G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Reboot won't see the hard drive to startup but goes to the cd and boots off the disc. The hard drive shows up on the desktop but it won't boot. It keeps going to the cd. If I take the cd out, I just get the flashing question mark in the folder in the middle of the screen. I checked Apple's web site for any updates and it doesn't list any needed. Tried the Firmware updates anyhow but it states they are not needed for this machine. Any ideas? Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement
I think that all of this stems directly from the Mac culture itself. The Mac is a drastically less used, more expensive, and a slower computer (sorry guysbenchmarks vs reality). Despite those huge marketing nightmare's many of us in the culture (as defined when you put down your hard earned $$ on a Mac) expect more than our constantly complaining Window's compadre. The facts are hard...that those who buy Mac's fit one of three patternsthey make their living on a Mac, they want to make a living on a Mac, or they love the obviously superior OS. For the first group, an upgrade is simply a necessity of business. For the second group, an upgrade is usually at a student discount brought to you by student loans. For the third group, an upgrade (or rather 4 in 4 years) is almost as great of a financial strain as the damn computer itself. Simply putMac user's spend a great deal of time talking about their Mac. Bragging even. And then they find that the $3000 they spent three years ago is now completely obsolete (even an old Dell runs WinDoze XP with minor hardware upgrades)...and well, that hurts. Blame whomever you like, the pain is still there..in my years as a #3 I often questioned just what the hell I was doing and why. By the time I am able to afford a new powerbook they'll have G6's (if Moto and IBM ever kick it into gear). My Wallstreet, while still functional is OSX Jag, doesn't have Panthercan't have Panther. Am I complaining? At first I did. At every chance. Now I just grin and bear itand the keyboard of the Wallstreet will get dusty from neglect and the three year old Dell with the inferior OS will be used more and more. I feel a tad neglected, rejected even.but it's all about money kidsApple can't spend the next two years updating their OS to run on every computer made in the last 4 yearsthat's Microsoft's job.and while producing an inferior OS, they still have 95% of the market. Apple is blessed. If they showed their customers 1/4 of the dedication their customer's showed them.they might have a chance in this market. Re: Problems with PCMIA slot...UPDATE Laurent, Thanks for the info...the kicker is that my old CapSure card works great, is recognized, and performs admirally but my USB and FIREWIRE (which I used to burn CD very recently) are suddenly UNKNOWNI stripped down the Wallstreet (twice) and fixed the drive so it now takes cards (with a little nudging) and ejects them (nudge nudge) but won't recognize them as anything but unknown (form and function)not quite sure what to do at this pointI thought I've read somewhere that the cards might need drivers after updating to 10.2.6 but the CapSure card is designed for OS 9 and no problems existI even tried two different firewire cards and both are unknown...the Bluetooth USB adapter that I plug into my USB Cardbus even lights up...so it's getting power.I'm ready for some voodoo chants but I'm scared that my wife's Gateway will overhear and suddenly morph into a usable machine.any ideas on a fix besides a new machine (an idea my wife treats with open hostility)... thanks, ed -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
