Re: troubleshooting dead Pismo

2004-04-01 Thread Jim Newberry
The crack is right near the display release. On another note, I found
a 20gb hard drive at ecost:
http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=399093
I googled the mfg. part number and it turns out it's a Toshiba:

Am I correct in assuming this will be compatible with the pismo?

-thanks again.

The first place to start was with firmly seated parts. After that, I
would suspect the power/sound board. They are rather precious on ebay
these days. Where is the crack, it might show where the point of
impact was when it was dropped.

troubleshooting dead Pismo

2004-03-31 Thread Jim Newberry
I just purchased a dead Pismo, which according to the seller
had been dropped. I'm trying to revive it. The case has a small
crack but otherwise it appears to be in very good physical condition.
It won't power on, and there are no lights on the battery etc--no sign
of power whatsoever.
I found a service manual pdf online, and have taken the powerbook
apart, as far as taking off the sound board. I made sure everything is
firmly seated and visually inspected all parts--I can't see any broken
parts.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting this? Are there any parts that
are most likely to be the culprits, or that would be good to start with
as far as replacements (battery, sound card)?
Also, any recommendations on good repair places?

Thanks!

-Jim

Re: troubleshooting dead Pismo

2004-03-31 Thread Jim Newberry
One thing I forgot to mention regarding the dead Pismo;
there's no hard drive in it. But I assume it should power on
without a drive, correct? There is a DVD drive and I have
the startup disc.
I'm thinking about sending it in to Powerbookresq.com--
any experiences with them? It seems like $49 is a good
price to get the problem diagnosed (including shipping
both ways).
thanks again.

I've read that sometimes, a very tiny crack on a line of the board
will be
almost impossible to see, yet, they may not be functioning. I'm by no
mean a
hardware expert, though...
