Re: Is it time to upgrade?

2004-05-12 Thread Kurt Appling

Re, this is just my opinion of course, but, I personally think that a
pismo is reaching the age that money for upgrades would be better spent
on a later model TI, leaving your pismo as is,while Im sure the 667 is
a very good machine, I can also tell you panther is not very fast on a
TI800,however the machine is by far more capable of so many things I do
not really use,but it is very comforting that it is so versatle to do
whatever I can think up.
best wishes

I have a G3 Pismo. I'm pretty happy with it, but I do envy the screen
space on my wife's 15 Al-book. I also wouldn't mind a bit of extra
speed, but not sure how much bang for the buck I'd get to upgrade.
I've been looking at the G4 667. Is the difference between the
earlier
ones and the later DVI models significant? It looks like it might be.
How would the Ti 667 compare with putting a 500mhz Daystar G4 in my
Pismo?
Or maybe just sit tight with the Pismo for a while--it's still a very
nice machine.

Does CompUSA offer their warranty even if you did not purchase the
computer
from them?

I do not like using CompUSA for anything Apple, but if it is my only
choice,
then I am forced to.
They cover a lot of stuff that Apple doesn't. It's actually a good
warranty.
You would have to bring in your machine so that they could test it (5
minute
thing) and make sure it is functioning and it has to be within the
manufacturers warranty still...which I assume yours is.

Not running Panther (yet) but...

In 10.2.x System Preferences/Internet/Web
Navigate to your desired default browser.
As well you could Get Info on a file (in this case, a webloc),
choose

I'll have to ask you what is cocktail?

Journalling is a technique where additional information is stored on
the disk to make it more forgiving of things that go boo in the night
such as program crashes and power failures. A journalling file system
should recover faster when it is booted after a power failure, and it
should be less likely to suffer data losses from fault conditions.

battery in refrdige

2003-07-03 Thread Kurt Appling
Hi all,I have gotten an explanation about putting a battey in the
fridge before rechargeing,it seems many newer chargers have electronic
senseing,so as an example, battery's in contractors tools left out in a
hot truck, the charger misreads the high temperature as a short, and so
will misread the battery as bad, chilling the battery first only allows
an accurate reading of the battey by the recharger, but does not
actually do anything to fix a bad battery,it simply aids in rechargeing
a good one. but its a useful trick to have. best wishes

Well, after the entire evening in the PB, the battery still flashes

pay-pal

2003-06-20 Thread Kurt Appling
RE;I think that is good advice if you have to use pay-pal for anything
,however they are not covered by the same laws that protect if you use
a bank or credit card.in my opinion just plan on loosing your money
with no real recourse, because you probably will eventually.

As for PayPal, I've had problems with them as well, which resulted in
my account being frozen for a year, as I wasn't going to knuckle
under to their extortion. In any controversy, they interpret the
evidence in their favor, i.e. to confiscate and keep your money. (Why
does a dog lick itself? Because it can.) I'd suggest: (1) DON'T ever
keep more than a minimal account balance with them, cause you could
lose it anytime; immediately transfer funds from your PayPal account
to your bank account if you make a big sale. (2) But DON'T give PayPal
access to your bank account; you can link the PayPal account to the
bank account one-way, to transfer funds from the former to the latter,
without allowing PayPal to tap the bank account.

Re: building a better mouse (was 17 Powerbook)

2003-06-11 Thread Kurt Appling
RE, well I agree about the scroll wheel, now that I have it I wouldnt
go back,I have also gotten acustomed to useing two buttons, left
single click, and right set to double click

I could stand the one button thing (possibly) but it is totally not
acceptable to not have a scroll wheel these days. I prob spend 75%
of my
computer time on the net, and every house in my computer has a
scroll mouse.

If that's the same one as the Pismo (PB FireWire), they are hard to
find right now. I needed one because my (2nd) power supply had died
recently (the one I got after the original Yo-Yo adapter died). Both
(IIRC) lasted about a year and a half (actually, I think the first
one may have gone just within my original warranty). This time, I
ended up paying more for the adapter, about $80 (plus 2nd day
shipping), because the places which showed lower prices were out of
stock.
Please post if you find a supply that has them in stock and at a
better price.
Thanks,
Jim Rohde

RE; famous words of a bank robber,, dont trust an automatic-- among

It is those times when Bessie is sleeping and using only her battery
that odd things happen. Very rarely -- maybe once every two months --
I will come back in the morning and discover that my laptop is turned
off. Pressing the power key boots her up just fine, and the battery is
always charged (as I usually leave it).
