Lombard Processor or Processor Upgrade

2004-09-30 Thread Lynn Kendall
The cache memory has gone on my Lombard, so I need to (A) replace the
processor card, (B) get an upgrade card that can replace the processor
card, or (C) part it out and hope to find a better laptop for a
reasonable price. (C) is unlikely, since I'm unemployed and don't have
any spare money.

So: clues for sources of reasonably priced 400MHz processors? Or for an
upgrade card? (Assuming one would work.) I've seen the ones that run
$300+, and I just can't afford that.

While the case is cracked, and assuming I can find something I can
afford, I might be able to put in a new hard drive with a larger
capacity than 10GB. Again, any recommendations would be very helpful
indeed.

Thanks, as always, for your wisdom and help.

Lynn

Lombard Headphone Jack

2004-02-24 Thread Lynn Kendall
I love my PowerBook, but recently I've been having problems with the
headphone jack. The male end of the cord doesn't seem to make a full,
snug connection. If I press on it, sometimes I'll get full sound.
Otherwise it goes in and out.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Preferably cheap or free, since I'm not working
right now.

how much to spend to fix powerbook

2003-08-03 Thread Lynn

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I am a bit confused. Not only do I have
the whistling sound when the adapter is pushed into the jack
, but my additional 300 plus ram is not showing up in the system
profiler. It shows up under about acomputer, but that is it.
I have been getting memory problems for awhile and wasn't
aware that the computer wasn't acknowledging all of the ram.
It stops whistling if I hold the plug and push it into the jack
tighter. I am using a brick. I have a backup yo yo but am
not too thrilled with it. THe last two have sparked on just
one use.

I can't record to a cd firewire backup. I get errors or else
it hangs during finishing session. I can get backup to my swappable
zip drive though.

Disk first aid fixed a volume error the other night.
I am not sure where to go with all of this.
At first I htought it was the drive, now it looks like it could
be adapter or both and why the trouble with the firewire?

A mac guy will charge 50 to come to my house (am disabled
and can't drive), 85 per hour for labor, and 200 for a new
Toshiba drive. I have heard the ibm travelstars are better
and cheaper.

Not sure how much I should spend on this if the money
could go toward a newer model. Am now very confused
about whether the computer has one problem or multiple
problems.

Thanks so much for any advice.
Lynn

I just looked at my system profiler and noticed that
it is not reading all of the ram. When I click on the
apple just to see about computer, it has right amount.
In the system profiler, it says that additional ram
is not compatible. I had extra ram installed two years
ago and it was always fine and showing up in the profiler.

COuld it be loose or is something wrong.
My applecare just expired in March on the three
year extended that I bought.

 Hi Ryan,
Yes, it's a Pismo G3 400. I thought the hard drive was causing
the noise but now know it's the a/c adapter connection.
I don't know if this matters, but i am having problems using
a cd burner from Que. I was getting erro messages and now
it just seems to hang when finishing session. My swappable
zip drive works and I was able to backup to that.

Wasn't sure if this info was important or not. I have a firewire
Que burner and the connection is in the back so wanted this
info known to you.

I am noticing that my screen is reloading slowly on the desktop
and I can see it happening. I have been running disk first aid
daily and las tnight it gave a minor volume error and fixed it.
I have about 12 percent fragmentation on the hard drive.
Haven't run norton yet.

Am wondering if my hard drive is indeed okay. Have no
idea about soundboards or anything. Will have to look into
it.

I got a price quote last week for a hard drive and am also
tyring to get in touch with another mac guy in the area.
Thanks for your expertise!

whistling powerbook is coming from a/c connection!

2003-08-02 Thread Lynn
Hi,

I just now have discovere that the whistling is coming from
my ac connection to the computer. My battery reading keeps
going in and out and when I tried to push the connection inot
the computer, the whistle goes away.
I just got this adapter last year because the yo yo was
sparking. I have another backup yo you but fear it will
also spark.

What does this mean? Is it just hte adaptor or something
more serious on my computer such as motherboard, etc.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Lynn

update on noisy PB

2003-08-02 Thread Lynn
Hi,

Last night I kept trying to record to cdr and was not successful.
I was able to back up some stuff to a zip drive though.

I have been running disk first aid sseveral times and it
always comes up fine. Last ight it came up thtat it
needed to make minor repairs to the volume.

I have disk warrior and I don't believe the drive
is super fragmented 12 percent is the figure.

I also have Norton but haven't run it yet.
Should I try to defrag my hard drive or is that asking
for trouble?

I don't understand why my cd burner is recording properly.
It worked the other night but now it seems to hang
on finishing session. Getting so frustrated!

Thanks for any advice!

I like the sound of your hard drive - or should I say non sound.
I am going to go and read about it and maybe I can order
my own drive and the guy can install it. I think I should at least
get the best drive and not the only one he might have floating

No, I do not normally have a phone line plugged in. I just
did it a few weeks ago when I was trying to figure out
the software. I didn't get anywhere so I just had a friend
fax it for me. I do not have a phone line connected to
my computer, just the cable modem.

I so wish I had a better working brain for all of this!

seem to think straight these days!

Re: noisy/squeaky, whistling computer

2003-07-31 Thread Lynn
Now that you mention it Bruce, I did fool around with
my modem settings a couple of weeks ago because
I wanted to send a fax to my dr. I am wondering
if this is when it all started.

Could that really be the reason for this noise?
My computer has not whistled at all today.
I think the modem control panel may be the reason
I am hearing crackling sounds when my email
gets picked up. However, I have cable not phone
line so I don't even use my modem. I wasn't able
to use my fax software so I just forgot about this.

Thanks,
Lynn

Hi Bruce~

I have not moved or changed anything in the environment. It hasn't
done the whistling thing at all today. It has been doing it off and
on for a few weeks and is giving me some other trouble. I tried
to burn a cd the other night and it showed up on my screen as
three different cds. After that when I try to back up, it never
finishes the session.

I can't tell where it is coming from. SOunds like the back. It is worse
at night for some reason. I have an airconditioner running at all
times. Computer doesn't seem hotter or anything. If anything,
it may be cooler.

I, too, was wondering about speaker stuff. I do know I sometimes
hear crackling sounds from the computer like speaker static or
something.

I suppose i should do a reinstall of my system software and
also the cd burner software. Disk first aid comes out fine
and I believe at last check there was minimal fragmentation.

Thanks so much for any advice.
Lynn

Hmm... I would like a quite drive! Am wondering if I can
order whatever drive I want and just have the guy
use mine. Do you think that is something I can
mention or is that not "ethical." LOL

I seem to recall there may be another guy in my area
who does this. I should see if I can give him a call.
I want to get a good hard drive, not just one he
happens to have hanging around.
Thanks,
Lynn

Thanks, Joe. I thought it sounded like a pretty good deal. Just
hope my drive hangs on until next week! I didn't realize
that you could get another warranty on the pismo's after already having

Hey,
Thanks Brandy, Joe, etc. I just called the apple place and asked
about it. I am worried about losing everything. He said he would
come to the house, backup all data and install a Toshiba
40gb hard drive to replace my ibm 6 gb. Total
would be $400. Not exactly something I want to do right now
but wondering if this is a good deal or not? The drive I htink
he said is 200, 50 for travel and 85/hr labor.

My drive hasn't whistled all monring!
Hmmm. He said the reason I may be having troubes with
recording is because the dri e is non the way out. Will
have to wait to next week if I decide to do this.

Thanks for any adviceeee!

SOS _ swuakey computer, etc

2003-07-30 Thread Lynn
Hi,

I am in a bit of big trouble. My hard drive is whilesting and my
computer is acting funny. I am trying to backujp everything
on my QUe CDRW and it doesn't seem to do anything right.
I guess I need to reinstall software. Last night when I made
a disc it was spllit into three icons on my computer. That seems
to work After that everytime I do one it never finishes
the session.

I am very concerned because I have just recently been
diagnosed with chronic neurological lyme disease and my
brain and eyes are not cooperating with me in antyying.
I need to backup my important stuff as soon as I am able.

If anyone knows the answer to the squesky whistling
hard drive or the recrdoing problem, please email me.
If it isn't too much trouble I would appreciate if you
could email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] also. I am
exhausted from a long day at the hostpial for testing
and this is the last thing I need right now!
Thanks so mcuh!

Lynn

Re: Pismo 400 chiming-now whistling

2003-07-29 Thread Lynn
Hi,

My message database is 44 mb. The last time I compacted
my messages I lost half of them. I have noticed
more whistling sounds than previously and am wondering if
this is just a flaw of the Pismo or is this a signal that
my hard drive is on it's way out? It isn't super fragmented
or anything. I guess I will start backing up all of my stuff.
I am too sick to do it but I can't risk losing all of my valuable
info on the hard drive.

Thanks for any advice.

noisy/squeaky, whistling computer

2003-07-27 Thread Lynn
Hi,

Just wondering if squeky whistling computer sounds is the
sound of doom? I have lots of info that is important
and I better start backing it up really fast.

Also, I currently don't have the dvd/cd drive module
installed. Maybe that is causing the noise?

I have heard strange noises in the past though.
I don't need this riht now!!!
Thanks for any help!

Re: Pismo 400 chiming

2003-07-21 Thread Lynn
System 9.21
Running IE 5.1 mostly
Microsoft Word 98

I have been getting times where the computer seems to freeze
up the scroll bar. Also, I had a big problem with OE 5
for email and lost many messages. It seems that it may be
related to RealPlayer. I have not been able to get real player
to work and the last time I did run it is when I had the OE problem.
My cable connection seems rather slow and I get so many
messages telling me that there isn't enough memory to
open another window when I have plenty of memory for the
applications. I have 320 mg memory and my computer won't
let me open Express and explorer with more than two windows.
I have allocated more memory to OE. Is this the famous
memory leak going on? I can't remember what to do for that.
I am in the midst of getting together medical info for an
appt with a specialist tomorrow and am more concerned with
losing info than the computer problem. I have too much on my
plate but want to take steps to prevent something worse
from happening. Disk first aid is usually okay although sometimes
it won't do it and says something another disk being in use.
I have no partitions.
Thanks!
Lynn

Pismo 400 chiming

2003-07-21 Thread Lynn
HI,

I hesitate to ask this because I do not want to know the
answer.

My PB has been chiming or dinging about 8 times every so often.
Not at startup. No startup issues. It usually happens when
I have it on but am not using it.

Does this signal anything bad?
Thanks,
Lynn

Re: Yo-yo failures

2002-11-01 Thread Lynn
Hi,

I, too, have had two replacements. One wasn't too long after getting
the PB. At that time I bought a third party product and kept the
yo yo as a last resort replacement. Well, the third party charger
stopped charging or connecting after over a year or so of use and I was
forced to use the NEW one they had sent me. After one day's use, it was
already sparking.

I bought another third party adapter and am much happier with it
than with the yo yo. I still have that as a replacement, but I don't
put much faith in it. I was under warranty the first time and the
2nd time I was in my extended warranty period.

They are pretty useless if you ask me!

Re: A/C adapter only works when you pull it to one side......

2002-06-02 Thread Lynn

Look in your Apple system profiler. It will give you the serial number.

I bought one of these adapters and it has the model number listed
as being recalled. However, since it didn't come with the powerbook,
it isn't registering on the website. Wouldn't my adapter be included
in the recall as well or are they only the adapters that came with
the computers? Mine has the right model number and the apple
logo on it.

OutlookE lost important folders!!!

2002-03-28 Thread Lynn

Hi,
I have been having strange problems with my mac and reinstalled
system software, rebuilt desktop, etc. last week. Last night
when I went to open Outlook Express it gave an error message and said
it was unable to launch. I trashed prefs, etc. and tried again. No luck.
I then did the compact option and it wouldn't do it the first way so
I chose to do it the complicated way. I was so thrilled when I got
my emails back. However, I am missing some very important
folders full of hundreds of emails! I can't imagine what happened
to them. I still have the old database and associated files. Everytime
I click on it I still get either a blank window or the restored
window minus my folders. Needless to say, I am not happy about this.
I can't believe there is not a way to get them back since I still
have the old database. Does anyone know what I can possibly do?
Also, my hard drive shows some folders as empty when I look at
them with the view list command. However, thankfully, when I change
it to icon, they are all there. I imagine I am going to have to reinstall
my system software again. I don't mind that. I really need to get
my lost folders back though.
Any suggestions? I will be forever grateful.
Thanks!
Lynn

They responded to my first email very promptly and sent
me a new disk since the disk that came with drive wasn''t
working. However, they failed to send me a firewire cable and they never
responded again after
several emails and phone call where I was told they would
