Al,

I saved up my pennies and bought the same iBook you have last October.
I have a gigE dual 450 G4 that used to be my main machine, but now
this iBook is it. The G4 is still in the same place on my desk but is
now acting as a server for the most part. I love the portability of
this iBook, I use it everywhere in the house, I even put it on the
book holder of my exercise bike and do a little web surfing while
riding the bike. I also find it nice to have while waiting for my kids
at the different lessons I take them to all week. I love this iBook,
it has replaced my desktop 100%. I do like having everything I do on
this iBook, I think that is part of the draw, it would be hard to have
some things on this and some things on a desktop. I guess it all comes
down to personal preference and how you work.

Now, you did say you could buy a new iMac and set it up, I have to
admit, if I had the cash on hand I might buy a new iMac and replace
the old beige G3 we have in our kitchen. :)

take care,
Kevin Avery

I use my G4 iBook as my main computer. I'm a heavy user often on my
'book 10+ hrs a day, but my son brought his new G5 iMac home over
winter break. There's no comparison. The iMac is awesome. If I had
to choose one it would be the iMac. The screen, the speed. You'll be
much more productive on it.

Re: Problem with Wallstreet HD install

On the WS the OS needs to be located in a partition less than 8GB in
size and it must be located in the first 8GB on the drive.

Thinking I must have damaged something, I took the new

Could someone please tell me what I'm missing here?

Homeowner's policies cover personal possessions against loss or
damage, not just the house. It depends on your coverage, it could well
cover dependent children at school as well.

That said, they may require a specific rider to do that. Check with
your agent.
Correct. Many homeowner's policies cover personal possessions from
loss, accidents, etc. If I leave my iBook sitting in the airport, drop
it down the steps, spill a drink on it, it's covered. (minus the
deductible of course, up to the policy limit, which is $3500 in my
case.) A few years back my son's bicycle was stolen while he was at a
friend's house. Covered.

Check with your agent.

Re: Opinion wanted

Got a homeowners or renters policy? Should be covered. At least part
of it.

Matt Halter
On May 19, 2005, at 3:54 PM, Laurent Daudelin wrote:
I'd like to have opinions on what I should do with my daughter's iBook.
Back in September 2004, I purchased a 12", 1GHz iBook for my daughter.
All
was well and she was very happy.

About a month ago, she called me and said that her iBook was suddenly
acting
strangely. I went over and noticed that the display would only show
vertical, narrow colored lines on a black background. I think I posted
to
the list about what the problem could be.

In anycase, I asked her what happened and she said "nothing". I was a
little
suspicious because after having used a PowerBook for more than 3
years, I
know that things cannot get wrong all of a sudden for no reason.

I took the iBook, still under warranty, to the closest Apple store. The
genius looked at it and said there was obviously something wrong with
the
main logic board and said they would have to send it to the Apple's
repair
facility.

3 days later, I've got an email from the Apple repair facility asking
me to
call them because they had discovered a problem. I knew that this
wouldn't
be good so I called my daughter immediately and told her what was
happening
and that before calling Apple, I wanted to have the truth. Sure enough,
something wrong happened. She actually spilled water over the keyboard
and
since she didn't know what to do and didn't want to tell me, you can
imagine
the consequences.

So, I called Apple and they confirmed what I had just found out. There
was
still liquid residues on the motherboard and this had shorted the
display
circuit. It seems that the computer is still working fine because I
was able
to boot it in target disk mode just fine.

Anyway, Apple quoted me at over $750 to replace the motherboard of the
iBook
who was purchased for $1000.

So, what are my options here? I thought I could maybe find a
replacement for
less and replace it myself, since I have disassembled various
PowerBooks and
was able to put them back together and they still worked. However, that
would probably void her warranty. OTOH, my experience is that the
warranty
might not be that helpful and will be running out anyway in a few
months.

So, what are you people suggesting?
Thanks for any opinion!
-Laurent.

Re: Dead (ish) Wallstreet help ?

2005-05-11 Thread Matt and Sue Halter
First, after you do shift-Fn-ctl-power and the fan runs hit the power
button again.

Second, a bad keyboard will give you startup problems. Do you have
access to another keyboard?

Third, I saw the tech in our High School bring more things back to life
by resetting the pram. She would reset it at least 3 times before
trying anything else. Here's the drill if need to refresh:
  1. Locate the keys Command, Option, P, and R.

  2. Make sure the Caps Lock key is not down.
  3. Restart your Macintosh (using the Command, Control, and Power
keys or the reset button, if necessary).
Immediately after hearing the startup sound, press the Command,
Option, P, and R keys simultaneously. If you don't hold down the key
combination within 5 and 10 seconds after you restart, you may need to
repeat steps 1 through 3.

  4. Hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound again.
  5. If the computer shuts itself off, press the Power key to turn
it back on.

  6. When the computer has finished starting up, restore any custom
control panel and network settings.

Also, does it exhibit this behavior plugged in and unplugged, battery
only? Have you tried to startup from a system CD?

I think a dead pram battery can also cause startup problems. Sometimes
it can be revived by leaving the computer plugged in for a few days.

green light and fan going, but there is no sign of life in the LCD and
no noise from the HD. The reset keys combo will also shutdown, so
basically the thing is dead except the reset keys combo will toggle on
the light & fan. Any ideas?

Since I've got nothing invested I'm game for some inexpensive parts, I
was thinking about the PMU or the CPU card for starters. I've removed
the HD and tested it as good. I've also removed RAM and tested with
known good RAM with no effect. Help. Thanks! Kris

First thing to try is to reseat the processor card. Make sure it
is FIRMLY pressed into its slot.
Next would be to replace the processor.
Mine had the same symptoms. Turned out to need a new processor.

Re: Wallstreet vs iBook G3-G4

2005-05-05 Thread Matt and Sue Halter
My wallstreet w/bluechip 466 G3 will run many programs faster under OSX
than my 800 G4 iBook, even though I have 640 mb ram in the iBook and
only 256 in the WS. I think it has to do with the difference in L2
cache size as much as anything. Just speculation though.

Well after a year away from the WS (OS X 10.2.8) I noticed it is
pretty faster than the iBook G3 500 MHz and not so slower than the
iBook G4.

Opinions?

Re: New 12" PB

2005-02-02 Thread Matt and Sue Halter
Congrats, I agree the 12" is a great combination of size and power. I
always thought I'd want the 15" until I got to play with them in the
Apple Store. I quickly warmed up to the 12". If I had the money I
would buy one in a heartbeat. If Apple keeps lowering prices...

Well, I went and got my new 12" PB with SuperDrive this afternoon from
the
Apple Store in Pasadena CA. Actually, I called them earlier and was
told
that they only had the 15", so I went to look at it, but the 12"
models got
there about an hour before I did.

As I am all finished with school, I thought that perhaps the 15" model
would
be a better fit, as I no longer truck my laptop all over the greater
LA area
day in and day out, but looking at them side by side, the 12" was just
just
so much sexier, and well, I couldn't resist.

Part of it also was the EXTREMELY positive experience that I had with
my
previous 12" G4 (1.0 GHz), and while I'm sure that the 15" is just as
reliable and well made, the 12" really fits the way I use a laptop.

So far, I really don't notice much of a performance difference,
although my
1GHz book already had a fast 5400RPM TravelStar drive like the new one
does.
There are small differences though. The new scrolling trackpad is very
nice, and only took me about a minute to get used to (no more SideTrack
driver), and the keyboard feels even better, if such a thing is
possible.
I'm scoring the keyboard as just production variance, but it is
possible
that somewhere in the last two years that Apple may have switched
suppliers
or just improved on the design, as the keys are both quieter and a
little
crisper in feel, VERY NICE.

Everything else is about the same. I don't have any BT devices so I
can't
test the new BT speed. I'll install "Knights of the Old Republic" and
"Return to Castle Wolfenstein" over the weekend and I'm sure the
difference
of 50% faster processor speed and double the VRAM will make a huge
difference.

In all, I cannot complain. With my student pricing (they gave it to
me even
though I graduated at the end of July) I ended up with a 1.5GHz, 80GB
HD,
SuperDrive and AirPort Extreme for the same price I paid for the 1GHz
with a
40GB slow drive and the add-on AirPort Extreme card last year. What a
deal!
