FW: G4 Sleeve recommendations? 2 (addendum)

2003-02-02 Thread Mike Amato

Can anyone recommend a good sleeve for a TiBook 15? I have a Port
laptop briefcase with the sling suspension system, but want some extra
protection for the TiBook. You can't be too careful with that big
screen and the painted surfaces. Ideally, I'm looking for a sleeve
that I can then put into the case I already have, for double protection.
I;ve seen the Waterfield design sleeve and the Maccase G4 sleeve, and
both look pretty good. Any one use one?

I use a CaseLogic Neoprene sleeve as further protection.Low cost, too.

 Here's their addresshttp://tinyurl.com/58c8

Yep, the Challenger disaster. The reason this slipped through is
because it was a long-awaited mission, and the ones in control didn't
want to listen to the warnings telling them to postpone the mission. I
don't know exactly what happened but it was a major fuck-up by NASA and
they didn't fly another shuttle for two years or something.

It wasn't NASA's fault. It was the fault of the manufacturer. There was a

Printer sharing works only with USB machines. You'd have to connect the

Send the document to the desktop computer and print from there, unless you
want to spend some money and get a wireless print server. I don't know if
they can handle a serial printer. You need either a USB or ethernet eqipped

Someone suggested Vaseline. I think that makes a lot of sence.
Everyone forgets that it's petroleum jelly - that's OIL.
I used to make leather goods and used it to bring new life to dry leather.
It's great on leather boots, makes them pliable and waterproof.
And it's cheap and readily available and sticks to the surface.
Great idea.

Re: Wireless Router options

2002-11-30 Thread Mike Amato

 From: Clark Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (G-Books)
 Date: Fri, 29 Nov 2002 23:42:24 -0800
 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (G-Books)
 Subject: Wireless Router options

I have a New Powerbook G3 (no Series). I want to put a Orinoco
Gold card in it and get a wireless router to connect it to the
 network. Some questions:

First does anyone know someplace to get an Orinoco Gold for less than $65.

Which routers support AppleTalk between the wireless and wired LAN.
This is a must for me, just to be able to print. I don't know why
but this should be difficult but it seems like the device should
 transfer ANY Ethernet packets.

As a general question can the wireless routers be used simply as an
access point. That is, to connect a wired LAN to wireless computers.
It seems some at least should be able to based on looking at some
features. I have a software router now and want to stick with it
unless I can find a hardware router than can do as much.

Are there any low cost routers that not only do port mapping but also
remap the port numbers. I think this is a big limitation of the ones
I've seen so far. They'll map one port number to a computer on the
LAN but what if you have two or more computers you want to make
available. For example you can have multiple computers accessible by
AppleShare IP or Timbuktu by mapping them to different port numbers
 (549, 550,... and 408, 409, ... respectively).

If you must print there are routers with built in printer servers, or you
could get a wireless print server. SMC is having a big sale on these routers

Depends on what you want to spend.
I would go wireless. You need 2 cards and a wireless router.
I have a Linksys wireless router (w/4 ports for hardwire)
Currently run 5 Macs 1) 6116 2) Starmax 3) Imac 4) Ibook 5) Powerbook

Re: airport alternatives for Wallstreet?

2002-11-20 Thread Mike Amato

 From: Kent Wieland [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Has anyone had success using any of the Airport-alternatives, such as
D-link, etc...? I'm interested in setting up a wireless network for my Imac
and Wallstreet from my cable modem. Ideally, I'd like to get a combination
access-point and router to connect the Imac directly via ethernet and the
 Wallstreet by PC Card.
Could anyone recommend brands/models for both the access-point/router and PC
card? BTW, I'm using OS 9.1 in both computers.
 Kent (digest mode)

Kent, I am using a Linksys Wireless router. I have a Lombard with a
MacWireless pc card, an Ibook with an Airport card, an Imac with a
Macwireless.com usb wireless adapter and a hardwired Mac 6116 and Starmax.
Microcenter is having a sale on the Linksys so others probably do as well.
No problems so far. The Linksys router is about the onl Mac they support.
Don't get their car or anything else that requires drivers.

Hope this helps,

Re: wiping hard drive clean

2002-11-20 Thread Mike Amato

Aladdin Systems, maker of Stuffit has a product called Secure Delete.
This is from their web page:

 http://www.aladdinsys.com/secure_delete/index.html

Secure DeleteĀ is like a paper shredder for your computer files. If you have
confidential paper documents you need to destroy, a paper shredder is the
best tool. But, today's paperless office needs a tool that safely and
effectively handles computer files as well.

Paper documents you crumple up and throw in the wastebasket can be easily
picked out and read by prying eyes. The same is true with digital files.
Even after you drag files to the trash and empty it, those files can be
recovered and read by people who should not have access to them.

With Secure Delete you can permanently remove files with confidence and
ease. Just drag and drop the files of your choice onto the Secure Delete
icon, and they are gone for good.

SECURE DELETE CAN HELP IF YOU:

*Use A Laptop. Theft rates are high and laptops are easily accessed by
others.
*Share a Workstation. Be careful of co-workers prying eyes.
*Take Your Mac in for Repairs. Don't let technicians read your private
files.
*Need More Disk Space. Why waste space? Get rid of useless files for
good.
*Operate a Home Business. Whether your office is inside or outside your
home, private documents need protection.
*Must Destroy Confidential Files. Secure Delete can help you comply with
the law if you are legally required to destroy confidential files.

WHEN YOU NEED TO BE CERTAIN, USE SECURE DELETE!

Re: airport alternatives for Wallstreet?

Check out Macwireless.com.==

MacWireless enables almost all Macintosh models to connect to a wireless
network, no matter how old or new these machines may be. If you have a
PowerBook 190, 5300, 2400; or if you have a desktop PCI system; or if you
have a machine with a USB port such as an iMac, now you also can have a
wireless network connection.

I am using their pc card in my lombard and the usb adapter with an Imac,
Both work flawlessly, have not had a problem.

You can get a pcmcia card. I got one for my Lombard from Macwireless.com
They also have a wireless usb card that you just plug into the usb of your

I have one of those for my wife's computer and both work well.

I think we'll be better off without them.
They're flimsy and not as well made as external ones plus they're IDE. I
think I will opt instead for a bigger internal and a Firewire external. They
seem to have lost their usefulness.

You need buy only one color cart, many generics cheap out there. Even if you
don't use it and it dries up. it will still register full.

Better yet, sell it and get a Laserwriter. They're really cheap now, have
infinitely better printing, lower per page cost, and don't dry out.
A plus, you can use Postsript printing. The quality is much better.
BTW I have a 740, too. People have given me laser printers Free!

Max out the ram and put as many apps as you can in memory. Put your cache

some extra pressure was applied to the closed 'book and now I have an exact
indentation of my keyboard on my screen. Its fairly light and if I turn up
the brightness, I can't see it and the screen itself is just fine. So, first
of all, is there any means of repairing the lightened areas of the screen
from where the edges of the keys touched the screen, and secondly, I've heard
that placing a peice of cloth or rubber across the board before closing stops
the indentations from getting worse/happening at all. Is this true, and what
material is the best to do this? I'd apreciate AS MUCH information on this as
possible, as I have to take it around with me quite a bit and I dont want the

I'm as old as the macintosh

Dylan, Other World Computing has a laptop screen protector, made of soft
leather, for $14.95. Below ia from their website:

OWC LSP Laptop Screen Protector

Have you ever noticed that the keyboard is leaving marks on the LCD screen?

Apple PowerBooks made since the 1998 Wallstreet models all the way up to the
brand new PowerBook G4 Titanium have had problems with their keyboards
coming into contact with the delicate LCD display and leaving marks on the
screen that sometimes will not come off. Most are oils left from your
fingers on the key caps; however, some are not removable.

Why take a chance?

We at Other World Computing have been troubled by this for a number of
years. And instead of just putting up with the problem, we decided to do
something about it. We have created.

Made of 100% top grain leather cowhide, this is a beautiful solution to the
problem. Finely crafted from first quality 1 oz. (approximately 1-2 mm
thick) black vegetable tanned cowhide, it is an elegant accessory for any
laptop. Please note, this is an all NATURAL product. Some slight marks, or
blemishes may appear on the surface of the protector. This is not because of
low quality, it should be viewed as proof of a genuine leather product.

Leather has always been thought of as one of the most durable natural
materials, and it is also very soft. The leather used to create the Laptop
Screen Protector is glove soft, you can be assured that it will protect your
screen from any marks. The Laptop Screen Protector has one side of the
leather finished in a smooth, tight pinpoint grain, called a chrome finish,
to protect your screen from any lint or dirt gathered by an unfinished hide.
The back side that lays on top of the keyboard is a soft suede backing,
natural unfinished leather hide.
