Re: 12 Powerbook G4: an AppleCare and AppleStore assesment

2005-10-09 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I have mixed feelings about the Apple store. When the one near me
first opened, it was great. As was said earlier, the geniuses really
did seem to be geniuses. And they took a look at my Pismo (!) after
what I came to find out was a kernel panic, recommended DiskWarrior,
and I was up and running that very day, all for free (yeah, I bought
the DiskWarrior but it's not like they charged me for looking at my
way-out-of-warranty laptop).

However, fast forward two years. I finally convinced my SO to
switch. We go to buy a bright shiny new Powerbook, i.e., to drop
$1,500-$1,700. I have never been treated so rudely. The salesperson
tried to upsell Applecare (which we planned to buy, but not right
then, thank you). I mentioned that since it was available throughout
the time of the original warranty we were going to hold off because
this was a big purchase for us. He then made this face like, Well,
if you're willing to risk it, I hope nothing bad happens, as if
somehow we were at some additional risk by not purchasing Applecare
at the time of purchase. Please. But the worst thing was what
happened next. It took him a really long time to get the Powerbook
from the back and when he finally arrived, I asked if the Airport
extreme card was there. (I know they're stock, but I had a friend
who had gotten home and discovered that it wasn't there). He looked
at me like he hated me, raised the box up to my face, tapped his
finger on the side where the spec labels are, and glared at me.
Didn't say a word, didn't say Yes, of course, Yes, they're stock,
Yes, if there's any problem you can bring it back, Yes, would you
like me to open it and double-check?, nothing. Just tapped the box
about 6 inches from my face. I have never been treated like that
before, not at BestBuy, not at CompUSA, not at Circuit City, hell,
not even at Wal-Mart. And *especially* not when I was spending well
over a grand. I mean, it's not like I was buying a USB hub and asked
if the adapter was really there.

So after that, I am really, really soured on the Apple store. I
think Apple needs to regroup and refocus regarding exactly what they
want the Apple store to be. Right now it seems like it's a
storefront no different than the other retailers I mentioned, except
that it happens to sell only one brand.

Also, don't forget, the Apple store is geared mainly to supporting
new sales and systems. How many years has it been since Apple
shipped a G4 tower that could accept an internal Zip (don't
forget, neither the Quicksilver or the MDD models could take an
internal Zip. The last one that could was the Digital Audio)

Re: New to list with questions on Pismo

2005-07-18 Thread Nancy Lawrence

Hi all,

I just joined this list with the hopes of learning more about
upgrading my G3 PowerBook. It's 400 MHz and has FireWire ports, so
I'm assuming it's the Pismo FireWire model (if that's not correct,
please tell me!)

Yes, it's a Pismo Firewire model, also sometimes referred to as
Powerbook G3 2000.

It currently has 64MB of memory, which I'd like to increase as
inexpensively as possible. I'd also like to upgrade it to OS X.
My questions are:

--Can I upgrade it to OS X? Which version is the best for this
model? Do I need to do anything besides add more memory in order
to do this?

I'm running 10.4.2 on my 400mhz Pismo and it's very snappy and so far
also fairly stable, so I would recommend starting with it. But I
also upgraded to 1GB RAM and a 7200 rpm hard drive (stock drive, if
that's what you have is 4200 rpm).

--What is the minimum amount of memory I can get away with and
still run OS X. My computer needs are pretty basic: cruising the
Web, email, basic word processing, etc. I was thinking of adding a
256MB module, which I saw for $28.67 at macsolutionsinc.com. I'm a
little unclear as to how this works though. I know there are two
slots. Can I keep the existing 64MB memory chip and add the 256MB
module as well to bring it up to 320MB? I'd love to add two 512MB
modules to bring it up to 1 GB of memory, but I can't afford the
$200.00 that would require right now.

Yes, you can do that. If you're doing the RAM installation yourself,
be sure to re-seat the processor card very firmly, so much so that it
feels very much like you're doing something wrong and might break
it. You really have to press on it, but do so only in the bottom
right corner. When I upgraded my RAM I didn't know this, didn't have
the processor card seated properly, and freaked out because I thought
I had broken by beloved Pismo. Which brings me to another point,
with which I'm sure someone will disagree. The Pismo is quite simply
the best laptop Apple ever made. It's a great machine, still robust
despite being 5 years old, and very versatile and upgradeable as
well. I love mine and wouldn't part with it for anything.

--I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the
newer wireless technology? For example, could I go into Starbucks
and hook into their network using this model?

Yes.

--Can I use an iPod mini with this computer? Since I do have the
FireWire port, I'm thinking that I could if I'm able to upgrade to
OS X and install iTunes on my computer.

Yes.

Also, is there any way to access the archives of previous messages
on the list?

Yes, see below.

Thanks for any tips or advice--it's greatly appreciated!

Karin

external monitor on iBook

2005-06-20 Thread Nancy Lawrence
Hi. I finally got my best friend to switch and she wants to buy an
iBook but she wants to be able to occasionally use it on an external
monitor. She is completely not tech-savvy and when she went to the
local Apple store and told the Apple Genius this he didn't listen
and went into great gobs of detail, so much so that I couldn't make
any sense of it when she got back. So I thought I'd turn to you all
for help.

Can anyone tell me a quick and reliable place to go for which models
can run external monitors with which cables, etc.? I would really
appreciate it because this information will make or break the deal
for her to buy the iBook.

Thanks in advance,
Nancy

Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-11 Thread Nancy Lawrence
Actually, as I'm gearing up to being one of those potentially highly
paid Professors in the next year or so, I can attest first-hand to
the fact that money from the forced sale of IBM Thinkpads at my
school does not in any way see the light of day in anyone in my
department's paycheck. I would look first to the Chancellor, then
the Provosts and Vice Provosts, then the Deans, and even various
lower-level administrators for excessive salaries due to fascist
computer policies. Since it's a publicly funded university you can
check it out yourself--the exact amount of everyone's salaries is
publicly available.

Meanwhile, there is *one* guy on the whole of campus that I can go to
if I have trouble with my Apple product, plus the only discount I get
is the one Apple itself provides me.

Re: Pismo Porcessor Upgrades ... G3 or G4?

2005-06-03 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I've been trying unsuccessfully to find out or actually purchase a
Powerlogix 900 G3 upgrade for at least 6 months, maybe longer, and I
always get that the store is not available at this time, and no other
places seem to be carrying it. So if you want an upgrade soon, then
you might abandon hope of getting a Powerlogix upgrade. If I
remember correctly, the store became permanently unavailable right
around the time of some big lawsuit in which Powerlogix is involved,
so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Please post or e-mail me directly if you find anything else out,
because I would really like to get this upgrade.

Good luck,

Of course, with the PowerLogix 900 I wouldn't have to purchase the

It always depends on what you're planning to use. If you are planning

to use

any application that would benefit (or even require) a G4, then
the choice
is obvious. Otherwise, the faster G3 will deliver more speed.
Also, the

processor speed itself should not always be the only factor to

consider when

buying a processor upgrade. The speed of the cache is also
important. For
instance, Sonnet offers an 1GHz G4 processor upgrade for Beige G3,
BW G3
and first generation PowerMac G4. However, the system bus in this
upgrade
runs at 66% of the original speed of the BW and G4 bus, which is
66MHz
instead of 100MHz. The bottom line is that it is not much faster
than the

OWC Mercury Z600 G4 500-600MHz ZIF because of this.

Re: Backup question, and a tip

2005-04-10 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I'm a big fan of SuperDuper. I've been using it through the last few
versions and I couldn't be happier. Cheap, easy, highly-functional.
It will back-up to a remote server and I think it has an option to do
the type of incremental backup you want. If not, you could use it in
conjunction w/ChronoSync--there's a nice article on that here:

http://www.mac360.com/index.php/mac360/more/
backup_and_sync_best_mac_apps_are_now_better/

and of course, there's a wealth of user experiences/reports here:

Hello again,
just wondered if anyone had any suggestions about good (and cheap)
remote backup options for Macs.

I considered .Mac, of course. But at the moment the MB allocation
seems rather paltry. SpyMac offers a lot of space for email but not so
much for storage (I think it's again 250MB). One option is of course
to email oneself with one's important files as attachments. But it
would be cumbersome. The ideal arrangement would be a remote server to
which a backup application automatically uploads the changed files for
the day. There are several offerings out there and I was wondering
whether anyone had had good experiences (in Mac-terms) with any of
them. I suppose the ideal space would be 3-5 GB or thereabouts.

And now for the tip: although I love OS X, one thing that gets me is
that when I single-click on a file/folder name in a finder window (I
use the 'view as columns' option), if there is not enough space in the
right column, the left columns gets moved off to the left and the file
name disappears under the next column. It makes getting back to that
column a bit of a pain, especially when it happens all the time. Well,
I've discovered that if you command-click on the file name again (or
any area of the half-hidden column), the left column comes back into
full view again without any need to reach for the scroll bar. Neat, I
thought.

Re: Kernel Panic

2005-03-15 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I don't know if this is relevant since consensus seems to be leaning
towards a RAM issue, but I suffered a kernel panic when my hard drive
got too full, i.e., not leaving at least 10% empty, something I
didn't know not to do until it was too late. DiskWarrior was the
*only* thing that rescued my data. Luckily for me I got everything
back, promptly installed a bigger drive, and now run at never more than
80% of the capacity of the drive. I haven't had a kernel panic since.
FWIW, I had 1GB third-party RAM installed, up from the stock 256,
throughout the whole ordeal and through every system update (I'm
running 10.3.8 now).

On Mar 14, 2005, at 1:57 PM, Rowan, Michael wrote:
Agreed. I was running for months with a cheap 512 chip added to my PB

chasing all kinds of stuff based on what was loading when it paniced,
etc. The apple dude yanked the new memory chip (which, when he did
it, had me shaking my head - it was *obvious* to me the upgraded os
was broken since the memory has been fine for months -- what are the
chances that my memory went south at precisely at the moment of
upgrade... )

Sure enough, the thing just booted up and ran flawlessly. Apparently,
the new os level is incredibly sensitive to memory quality. (probably
a feature added by the high end memory makers - since we are
entertaining conspiracy theories on gbooks.)

I thought it was the uplift to 10.3 that did this, but its been a
while. Might have been 10.2.

upgrade went through well apparently until time to reboot. Now it
kernel panics.
Following Apple's documentation, I've reset NVRAM PRAM and tried to
boot from the Mac OS X.2 install disc. When this happens, it boots to
the gray apple, then I get video problems (once an overly bright
screen wash, once lots of verticle gray lines) and a freeze. A soft
restart is possible (Apple-ctrl-Power), so I've not reset the PMU.
Reseat your RAM, possibly replace it...such kernel panics are usually
related to poor ram. (although if you had OS 10.1 installed it should
have given you hassles before.)
It could also well be a munged upgrade. Try resetting the PRAM three or
four times in a row (hold down control-alt-p-r until it bongs that many
times. Some people recommend ten times for particularly resilient NVRAM
resets)

FWIW, I've upgraded (twice) with Travelstar 7200rpm drives, a 40gb and
a 60gb, and I've never had any problems with heat or noise. I haven't
put them in an iBook, though, so I don't how that would go.

Re: Slow iBook G4 1Ghz

2005-02-15 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I too would really like to know about this. I recently acquired a G4
800mhz iBook and immediately upgraded it to a gig of RAM and I swear
that it is slower at most tasks than my 400mhz Pismo, also with a gig
of RAM. I really expected a big difference in speed and I just haven't
seen it. Any ideas??

Now have encountered an iBook G4 1Ghz with 128MB running Panther 10.3.6
that is slower than my old WS machine!

I looked at the processor with Top and it was running at about 50%.
Some

little RAM.

In my old WS changing to another app could take about 5 seconds at
times,
longer if I ran more than say 5 apps. To start an app took maybe 10
dock
bounces. On this book starting an app takes very long time, like 15
bounces. Changing app takes way more than 15 seconds, between say, Word
and System Preferences, those two being the only ones loaded.

While any machine with 128MB is running sub-optimally, I was impressed
on
the WS 266 when Panther support in XPostFacto arrived and how much
snappier my machine felt even with as little as 128MB ( I later
upgraded
to 384MB).

It seems that I'm not looking at processor overload, but something more
complex. Anyone have any suggestions what to look for including
hardware
problems in this model?

I'm going to try to redo prebinding and getting rid of all suspect

before I install more RAM. Any other suggestions?

Actually, you can change user short names, but you have to let someone

entered, like it usually has been with other things... I guess that is
what they want you to think...

You can't really change the account to your name, at least not fully
-- short user names cannot be changed once set.
Too bad... It would make a lot of things easier. iTunes is set so that
you have to enter his user name to access it. I guess it can be moved
to my user account, but... The obvious easy solution would be to just
change the account name and all would be OK, if it weren't for the
other challenges, that is...

Language changes don't take full effect until you log out and back in
again (or until you quit all open applications, including the Finder
and some system services). If you've done that, and some applications
still use the wrong language, they may not have Norwegian
localisations. Since you speak English, you should drag English
into second place in the Languages preference pane. This will force
every app that doesn't support Norwegian to use English instead.
Changing to English as second, then Swedish and Danish (which I can
read) as third and fourth, was the first thing I did. I thought I had
logged out and back in, but to be sure, I first double checked the
language preference panel, and logged out again and re-started. When
it started up, it showed french during the start-up. Then when I tried
to log out again, it still showed french. I really can't imagine that
it wouldn't show these basic things in Norwegian, all other OS's has
done in the past. I just don't get why I can't get rid of it... Maybe
the only choice I have, is to start over again.

Hmmm... If I load iTunes and it's contents over to an external HD,
re-install the system etc., and load it back, would I be able to
access it? Then I won't have the account with the previous owner's
name anymore, the one which I have to enter now to be able to access
iTunes... Maybe I am forced to move the library first? I have no idea
how I can do that, not being used to OS X (or different accounts in
general), but I am sure it can't be all that difficult. Can you change
the settings for iTunes, so that it becomes available from all
accounts?

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it!!!

Aase--FWIW, the jumpiness of the trackpad on my ibook is something
I'm still not used to, especially compared to my Pismo. I've fiddled

One big thing just happened though... I am now typing on my new

of a little, super silly mistake! That is how it often is, I think, I
just assume that it is much more serious and difficult than it is...
How super-neat to be on though!!! I am having some problems while

happening with this track pad. The one on the Pismo isn`t that

Right now I really want to go and start downloading stuff, but I guess
I will have to wait until tomorrow, after we have re-installed the

I must say, even if it is odd with a smaller screen, I love the colors

Thanks again! I am afraid that I will be bugging you guys a lot in the

Re: wireless for pismo: card or airport?

2005-01-10 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I have a Pismo 400 mhz, 1gb RAM, running 10.3.5 and have used both the
Buffalo 54g w/port for optional antenna and the Belkin 54g (the one
that can go up to 125 mbs) PCMIA cards. I have been happy with both.
I take my Pismo to and from my workplace at least every other day and
haven't yet even bumped the card. I liked the convenience of not
having to do an internal installation and the option of faster
speeds/upgrading. I can get the model #'s if you're interested.

As far as I can tell, the advantages of getting an airport card are
full support and once it's in there it's in there, doesn't stick out
at all, but on the other hand it costs more, needs to be installed

The various cards run 802.11g, are mostly cheaper and by all reports
the broadcom ones seem to work well. The macwireless one is supported,
but costs more. I do worry a little about how robust they are when
traveling -- maybe the policy will be to remove the card before
putting computer in case, and find special case to put card? or is it
pretty safe once it's in there? And then there was something about
breaking a little plastic tab somewhere on the way to finding how to
release the battery (I haven't examined closely, but I think we're
talking about the card slot on that one, does she need to fix it if
she wants to use a card?)

Any thoughts, questions, suggestions, and warnings welcome!

Not specifically to do with iMovie but I crashed my orig. 10gb Pismo
hard drive by getting it too full and it was a week-long nightmare
that eventually ended with it being mostly restored, thanks to
DiskWarrior. Shelled out the $100 for DW after two days of kernel
panics and fscks to no avail and then an additional 5 days of DW
running non-stop restoring the drive. Before that happened, I didn't
know about the keep 10-15% of your hard drive free no matter what
rule but I found out about it afterwards and now abide by it
religiously. Just my .02...

Re: Pismo HD replacement, 7200 rpm?

2004-12-13 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I really like my Hitachi 40gb 7200rpm drive. I have a Pismo 400 and my
only complaint is that I should've gotten a 60 gb. It did make a
peculiar whirring sound after about a month of use but I figured that
perhaps the whole sled had gotten jarred--I carry it on a bike quite
often--and so I removed the drive sled and put it back and put an
eyeglass pad on top for good measure. I haven't heard anything from it
since. Oh, and my fan has *never* come on. I really noticed a big
speed difference, too. I upgraded from the stock drive, which is 4200
rpm.

Re: Pismo max ram and floppy options

2004-12-11 Thread Nancy Lawrence
Pismos can indeed take 1GB of ram. I've been running 10.3.5 on a
400mhz with 1GB quite happily for a while now. A few months after I
installed the ram I also upgraded to a 7200rpm 40gb Hitachi drive and I
was surprised by how much difference there was between it and the old
4200rpm drive.

Don't know about the floppy drives.

I've got a PowerBook G3/500 Firewire model (Pismo).
I'm running OS X.3 on it, but it spools the hard drive OFTEN which

performance to a halt. Currently it has 256 MB ram. So I want to max
out
the ram, but I'm unsure if the max is 512 or 1024.

Apple and EveryMac claim 512. However, I know Apple often specs the max
lower then it really is (they spec based on what could be tested when
the
unit was released, so if 256 was the largest chip size in 2000, they
will
claim it tops out at 512 (2x 256)).

LowEndMac claims 1024 is the max, as does Crucial.com.
Before I spend $200 getting a pair of 512 chips, I wanted to know if
anyone was actually running 1024 successfully in a Pismo (and are there
any gotchas I should be aware of).
Also, as long as I am on the Pismo topic, I want to get a floppy drive
for it. I found an Apple Tech Note that says the Pismo can use the
Lombard drive modules (but not always the other way around). I was
under
the impression the Lombard has a floppy drive available for it. Can
anyone confirm that I can in fact use a Lombard floppy in my Pismo? I'd
rather get a floppy drive that uses the drive bay over a USB based one.

Or does anyone know of a 3rd party floppy drive module that works with
the Pismo?
Thanks!

Re: Default Application in OS X Panther

2004-11-16 Thread Nancy Lawrence
FWIW, it's not anything you did. The same thing happened to me when I
downloaded Nisus. Apparently changing your default word processor is
supposed to be a helpful feature. I spent a while trying to get the
icons to change to no avail. Eventually some of them changed but I
don't know why.

the icons back to Word icons?

Re: Pismo disaster - please help!

2004-11-07 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I'm sure someone else will mention this, and I know you already tried
it, but are you sure that you've re-seated the processor card firmly?
When I upgraded the ram in my Pismo I didn't press hard enough the
first time and I got nothing upon booting up. I did some checking
online and found that you actually have to press pretty hard on the
bottom right corner (as you're facing the open screen) in order to
properly re-seat the processor. I thought for sure I was going to
break it but it worked after that.

hello all, i'm putting together a Pismo for my

5400 rpm Toshiba drive, making sure of course that is
is ATA-5 compliant as per Other World Computer's item
description.
so... i installed it, which is easy in these 'Books as
i'm sure you all know, buttoned it back up, and upon
attempting to boot, was greeted not with The Chime,
but rather with a single beep and a black screen. i
opened it back up and made sure connectios were
secure, and tried again with the same result. i
subsequently tried:
1) checking the connections again (keyboard, hard
drive, LCD, PRAM battery)
2) removing, and reseating the processor
daughterboard, as i had inadvertantly pulled on it's
tab when pulling the original hard drive out (of
course, i checked it immediately, but did it again) -
*this might come up again*
3) reinstalled the original hard drive (which worked
fine initially)
4) reseated the processor daughterboard again, and the
single 512Mb RAM chip
5) tried booting with the keyboard and hard drive(s)
unconnected to see if i could at least get the ?/Boot
Volume (of course, the battery and CD/DVD drive were
unconnected the entire time)
6) pressing the reset button on the back, and then
holding down the power button for twenty seconds
7) and finally, disconnecting the PRAM battery, power
cord, battery, and CD drive, waiting 24 hours, then
resetting and attempting to boot again
... each time, single note chime and black screen. my
thinking is that i must have damaged the processor
daughterboard when i pulled on it's tab accidentally
with the heat tube assembly still screwed down, but i
don't want to buy a new 500mhz processor/board only to
find out it's something else...
any suggestions would be much appreciated, as a 14
year-old girl's Holday (and, therefore, global peace
and happiness) hangs in the balance.

David

Re: Wireless but not AirPort ???

2004-11-02 Thread Nancy Lawrence
If you decide to go with PCMIA, I recommend the Buffalo G54A (the whole
model # is WLI-CB-G54A). I have been using it in my Pismo and it works
great. I didn't have to install any drivers or anything because the OS
apparently already recognizes it, so it was just plug-n-play. It also
has an external jack for an antenna if you decide that's something you
want. And it cost around $30 at newegg but I think that it was on sale
at the time.

I am fixing a PowerBook Lombard or an IceBook
for my wife and she'll probably want it to be
wireless, but rather than spending (too much)
money on AirPort I'm thinking of buying a
standard PC basestation/sender.
Which ones work well with a Mac ? Makes ?
USB or PCMCIA ?
Larry
P.S. I have asked about this before but I recall
the topic going off rails due to Windoze topics
so I never got a real answer...

I would recommend a Netgear base station I have had very good
experiences with them and they are completely configured through a web
interface so they are completely OS independent.
As far as a card goes I definitely recommend PCMCIA over USB. First of
all PCMCIA is faster so you could use 802.11g (54Mbps) if you wanted
to.
Second you usually have a sturdier device that doesn't stick as far out
the laptop. Lastly I've personally had too many reliability problems
with USB in the past to recommend it.
