How much to increase 400Mhz to 500Mhz?

Powerlogix has a BlueChip G4 500 upgrade for the Lombard. Check

Are Jensen speakers standard on Pimo's?

Not sure, but there's some good general info on G3/G4 PBs here:

PC card slot lever is broken on this Pismo I'm looking at, is this easy to
fix?

You'll have to replace the PCMCIA card cage as the eject mechanism is
integrated. Doesn't appear to be too terribly difficult to do. You can get
one at http://www.pbparts.com for $59.

I just installed the IBM TravelStar 48GB drive in my Pismo 500 (orig. 20GB

it started working and I've just left things alone since then.

Joe, I ran into this problem a while back. When @Home folded and Comcast
switched me over to their own network, my cable modem connection via ABS
suddenly stopped working. Drove me nuts bouncing back and forth between
Comcast and Apple support for about a week.

Then I happened to find out that it's because Comcast changed their
networking protocol somehow. The recommended solution was to get a hub or
router to put between the cable modem and the ABS, which I did. This
resolved the problem. Some months later, Apple corrected the problem with
onr of their Airport updates (sorry, don't remember which). I've
subsequently ditched the router.

My recommendation is, unless you absolutely need the hub, download the ABS
updates and try it out. You may gain other benefits as well.

At home it's connected to a 19 in. monitor, an external keyboard and
mouse, and through a 4 port USB hub to a printer, a scanner, a pda
cradle, and sometimes a camera. The iMac used to do the same stuff.
I left it on all the time and put it to sleep when I wasn't sitting
in front of it. I want to do the same with the Pismo. Now, the
Pismo is setup to run with the case closed.
Should I continue to do this or not?
I've noticed that the bottom of the case gets hot when it's awake and
doing stuff. It cools down some when it's asleep. I have it raised
up from the desk surface sitting on two 1x1x10 in. pieces of wood, to
allow air circulation under it. I'm thinking of building a small fan
box for it to sit on. Or the idea just hit me to build a padded
stand so the Pismo could stand on end with the cd-dvd drive pointing
up. This would allow natural air flow around it. Is this necessary?
There must be other people using them for regular desktop use, what
 are your thoughts/experience?

Dan, I use my Pismo in a very similar situation. When in desktop mode I
leave it on all the time, sitting on a CoolPad (the smaller, portable
version), and connected to all my external peripherals. Since running OS X
(from first official release), I don't shut it down at all (I have some
backup scripts that run in the wee hours of them morning), and have had nary
a problem. When I first started running it like this, I monitored the heat
situation closely, but it never got significantly warm just sitting around.
It's been well over a year now that it's been serving in this manner, and
runs just as well as ever.

That's true -- probably wouldn't work with a docking station. I looked into
getting the BookEndz (I believe that's the name) station awhile back, but
the benefits didn't seem to justify the cost for me, since I'm not
hooking/unhooking the 'book every day -- maybe once a week.

I should also point out that the CoolPad is a fairly recent acquisition, and
it wasn't purchased due to any specific heat-related issue. I simply like
the pitch that it gives the keyboard for typing when not using my external

The best and most widely supported format for posting URLs in email and

More email clients will turn this format into an active link than any
 other format.

And it keeps the URL from breaking on line wraps in the message window.

Yeah, Peter, but it set you back 32 years!

Well, these are the same fragile tapes that I already trust many of my most
precious memories to - certainly as important to me as the data on my hard

And I'm thinking more of archiving than anything I would want instant access
to - why not back up your whole hard drive to a tape in the small hours?
CDs are too small to back up large files, e.g. Video, while DVD isn't really
 mainstream yet.

Fact is, I've got a medium which is ideal for large-scale storage (DV tape),
a device that can record onto this medium (the camcorder) and an interface
on my Mac that allows it to output a data stream to that device (firewire).

 So why not?

Well, then here is a good place to start:

Yep, it's good stuff... I checked it out yesterday.

Recommendation for him though: use JPGs instead of GIFs for your web
pictures, so we can see the true beauty of your work, not just in 256
colors.

I sure like those cherry bookshelves!

Re: Mac.com errors

2001-07-18 Thread Paige H. Adams

No, but I notice the Apple servers have been kind of finicky the past few
days for some reason... iTools was down for maintenance 2 days ago.

I'm sure it was just a temporary outage. I've received the below message
several times with my @home account, since my server seems to go down for a
few minutes about once every month or two.

I would think that this would be a qualifying product, but have you
 checked out MS's site?

Yep. I've dug all around there to no avail. I thought about e-mailing
Microsoft to ask, but figured I'd pose the question here first.

I tried using Appleworks for a while there too, but I don't care what
anybody says, it's just inferior to Word in particular, and the converters
 don't always work.

Agreed. It's good for what it is, but for heavy-duty stuff it just doesn't
fit the bill. Since I'm sharing a lot of work with MS Word owners, it's very
tedious to have the document converted each time and then lose most of the
formatting when it opens in AppleWorks. Plus, I've been hearing how good
Word 2001 is on the Mac (some people claim better then the PC version), so I
need to try it for myself.
