Re: Eject Removeables in OS 10

2005-06-15 Thread Stephen Bright
Thanks, Keith:

I don't have a problem ejecting a DVD, but I'm having a problem REMOVING the
module and swapping
out the HD with the DVD drive in Tiger. OS 9 had those nice messages, it is now
safe to remove the
DVD drive. I don't think Tiger has any code to handle the Pismo's external bay.
I can eject the
DVD, insert the HD module, and Tiger doesn't see it. It still thinks it has a
DVD drive.

If there is someone who can do the expansion bay swap in Tiger, PLEASE let me
know. Thanks
Stephen

Eject Removeables in OS 10

2005-06-15 Thread Stephen Bright
Hello list:

This is my first posting after leaving the list for several years. I have a
Pismo G4 with a nice
60 GB Travelstar HD in the expansion bay, but I'm having trouble telling OS 10
that I want to
eject the HD and install the DVD and vice versa. OS 9 handled this great, but
how do you do this
in OS 10?

Many thanks for anyone who has ideas or has solved this problem,
Stephen

Thanks all for the input. She decided to go with Earthlink, her current ISP,
because they are cheaper than RaodRunner ($19.95/mo vs. $25, and they have
no setup fee) and she didn't want to write a third check).

But I'm interested in what Ryan offers for $7.95, as a bare bones hosting

Re: Airport Extremely Frustrating

2003-02-27 Thread Stephen Bright
> What kind of Powerbook do you have?

Pismo G4/500 (40GB GNX), and I think the cables are crossover, as I bought
them to connect computers to the switch. The cable that came with the modem
did not work, and I suspect that is a direct connection cable, as it is
meant to connect the modem to 1 computer. Is there an easy way of telling
which kind of cable is which?

Also, I'm just trying to get the cable modem to connect to the WAN port of
the Base Station.

Thanks,
Stephen

PS I checked out your hosting site. Did you know you are more expensive than
say, Interland, and offer less mailboxes? And have you heard of bad
experiences with Time-Warner? Or other reasons to believe that they don't
know what they're doing? Thanks, S.

Airport Extremely Frustrating

2003-02-27 Thread Stephen Bright
My new AE base station has a fondness for 1 particular ethernet cable to
connect from the modem to the WAN port. It won't work with any of my other 5
cables, and it took me about 6 hours to figure that out (the other cables
work fine with other computers and my 10/100 switch).

Even with its favorite cable attached, I'll still get intermittent signal
drop-outs, and even then it takes several modem/AE reboots to get the system
up and running againing. Any ideas on what I can do about it?

Thanks,
Stephen

Re: Printing Font problem (slightly OT)

2003-02-18 Thread Stephen Bright
> I'm running OS9.2.2 on an iMac Bondi and am connected to an Apple
> LaserWriter 8500.

I'd guess it could only be a bad printer if the font is permanently stored
in ROM in the printer's permanent mewmory. Times New Roman is usually a
TrueType font, and those are not stored in many laser printers to my
knowledge.

Corrupt fonts are pretty common, and I'd try replacing that copy with
another copy of Times New Roman. Also check your system folder for multiple
copies of the same font, as you may have more than 1. A work around is using
Times, which is the postscript version of the font, and is otherwise
identical.

(As a rule, I am trained to avoid TrueType fonts in general, because they
are incompatible with many high-resolution imagesetters, including our own).

Re: Which Version MacOS for Pismo

> What company is as evil as quark?

Microsoft, and Adobe! To all who shelled out $300 for InDesign 1.0 (myself
included): you were swindled into paying to be a Beta Tester for an
half-finished product. For all who shelled out $150 to upgrade to InDesign
1.5 (myself included): you were suckered into thinking it would actually
work this time - and were wrong again.

Who else was suckered into buying endless versions of PageMaker (me) that
was expensive, the definition of bloat, didn't work half the time, and was
still inferior to Quark???

I work in prepress for a printing co. in Austin TX, and we have never
received a job in InDesign. I like version 2.0, but I also like Quark. Every
product they release is excellent, which is much better than Adobe, where
you get a good layout release about every 5th or 6th try.

Is anyone using a MAGMA CB2S (or other) PCI expansion bay to use full-length
PCI cards on their Powerbook?

Does this mean it is not necessary (or not even a good idea) to totally

Re: pcmica card

But all laptops have non-upgradeable video cards, so Pismo owners like
myself have no way to get a 16MB video card or better. I just thought the
pcmcia slot might me able to accommodate video upgrades, which every pbook
would want eventually, I would think, (unless you buy a new one every 2 or 3
years).

I'm wondering why nobody makes pcmcia video cards anymore. The last one I
could find was the 4MB 1x3D RoadRocket ($40 on ebay). Is there a hardware
limitation or demand limitation on producing upgraded pcmcia video cards?
Thanks,

Now that Apple has reduced the price of the regular Airport Base Station by

now or wait several months in hope that someone will develope the Extreme

Difference Between Pismo 400 & 500?

2003-01-13 Thread Stephen Bright
Is the only difference between the Pismo 400 and 500 in the processor card?

I'm asking because I recently took my Pismo 400 in to Powerlogix for the
G4/500 upgrade. They ran late on the install, because some of the RAM pins
were not functioning properly, so they eventually gave up on it and
installed the upgrade on a 500 MHz processor card, at no additional cost to
me. This lets me run the cache speed at 200 MHz as opposed to 166
recommended for the 400. Is there any other architecture difference between
the 400 and 500 that anyone is aware of?

Thanks.

Re: The 17" PowerBook

2003-01-08 Thread Stephen Bright
> digital vs. analog is an argument about the source of the sound.

There is another digital vs. analog argument about the best way to record
acoustic instruments. Some will use tape to 'warm' a sound and then proceed
from there digitally. Some will record and mix 100% analog. A modern
recording facility will have both digital and analog recorders, and the
choice is often one of personal taste.

DVD Europe/USA Compatability Question

2003-01-04 Thread Stephen Bright
I just found out that I can't play German bought DVD movies on my home DVD
player. I assume it is because of the PAL/NTSC format difference. 2

1) would my Pismo DVD player (or any other laptop) be able to play
European-market DVD's
2) would my Pismo be able to play European home recorded DVD's?

Slightly off-topic, but hopefully someone here can shed some light on the
matter. Thanks,

Fan of Fanless

2003-01-01 Thread Stephen Bright
So as I embark on my migration from several Umax towers to a Pismo, I'm
wondering how much of my old gear I can bring with me. The only requirement
is that it doesn't make a sound. (I almost went for the Cube instead of
Pismo for its totally fanless operation, but the Pismo won out for the ease
of mobile audio recording.)

1) I have a nice internal 80 GB Barracuda 3.5" ATA drive that I'd like to
recycle as a Firewire drive for the Pismo, but I'm wondering if there is
such a thing as a fanless case for it.

2) Anyone using SCSI on their Pismo? I also have a very quiet 36 GB Atlas II
10K scsi drive, that in theory would be my fastest HD, if I could find a
quiet external (fanless???) SCSI case for it (and a PC card to go with it).
Who makes the SCSI PC cards, anyway? And can you get one at 20 or 40 mb/sec.
speed?

Thanks much for any ideas on this. Also, any suggestions on keeping the
Pismo internal fan from coming on will be most welcome.

Re: new pismo owner

> Re. you memory upgrade, you may have 2 x 128MB installed

Thanks for the warning, but it has 1 x 256MB, with one slot open. I'm still
wondering who buys the 'low power' RAM? I'm interested because the main
reason I bought the Pismo is to do fanless audio recording, and although I
really don't want to pay 2 or 3 times the going rate for RAM, I do want to
do what I can to keep the fan from coming on. But I assume the 'low power'
refers more to battery drain than heat generated.

New Pismo Owner - G4, Upgrade Questions

2002-12-30 Thread Stephen Bright
Hello, I am a new Pismo 400MHz/256/10 GB/DVD owner ($700) and this is my
first post to this list. I am migrating to the Pismo from a Umax s900 to do
fanless (hopefully) audio reccording via Firewire (MOTU 828) interface. And
I am interested in getting some feedback about Pismo upgrades.

1) G4 upgrade. I was planning on going Powerlogix, mainly because it is only
$279 for Austin TX, residents. Any reason to prefer Newer?

2) Ram upgrade. I was planning on getting 1 new 512 MB stick from OWC. Any
reasons to consider the much more expensive "low power" RAM?

3) CD upgrade. Looking at the IBM 40 GB Travelstar 5400/8 MB cache. Any
thoughts on what may be a better choice?

Thanks in andvance for any help from more experienced users.

Best,
Stephen
