which they use for mobile computer labs. The majority of students here are
using desktop computers and very few have laptops.

I don't see having a need for floppy disks as being anti Mac, just being
practical using the least expensive way of transporting classroom projects
from school to home for my students.

I have always used Mac's and would never think of going to a PC, but still
find the floppy to be far more practical than CD's or DVD's for classroom
use.

Since only 60% of my students have internet access at home, although 80%
have computers, the internet is not a viable alternative either.

Your iPod is really an external hard drive with software that lets it

little extra. Plug it in and treat it like any other external. I have
a 1st

carrying around 10 CDs or a big external drive and power supply.

to fill the drive back up again first and see if we get errors again.

Anyway, the speed was great, but I'm skeptical about the diagnosis, and

Re: 144 buck expansion bay DVD-R/RW

2004-08-19 Thread Thomas Ethen
Did you try burning in Toast without the patch? My Matshita 330 that I used
for replacement in my Pismo went flawlessly and burning with Toast was
supported as soon as I put it in the expansion bay to replace my old drive.

I replaced my Superdrive (DVR-104) in my desktop with a Pioneer DVR-108
($85) and the switch went perfectly and burning both DVD's and CD's are
three times as fast as with the original drive. I have not tried burning
with anything other than Toast 5 and 6 though, as that is all that I use.

Tom

Wanted to share my positive experience regarding the DVD burner upgrade to my
 Pismo [500, 40gb 5400, 1gb, Airport, 10.3.5].

I purchased the 'Panasonic' (actually shows as a Matshita in ASP) UJ-825-B
from newegg.com at the low price of $143. It is: slot loading, black, 2.4X
 DVD+R, 2.4X DVD+RW, 4X DVD-R, 2X DVD-RW, 2X DVD-RAM, 16X CD-R, 8X CD-RW.

After installing it in the exp. bay, I found burning unsupported in 10.2.8 but
DVD viewing, CD reading was fine.

Pros - Cheap, slot loading, DVD burning, boots to CD, quieter than stock DVD.
 Cons - Bezel doesn't match.

I purchased a iBook 12 G3 and left it the way it was set up from the
previous owner, just adding my own software. Last night when I booted to

the old owners settings, such as e-mail settings and zeroed out my settings

In my two High School Computer Labs, the Mac lab just runs on its own and
the PC lab has to have a full time tech there to deal with almost daily
issues with the computers. I even have two extra PC's to cover for down
time, while that is not an issue in my Mac lab.

what bothers me is the seeming
attitude by many that the mac is just beset with horrible problems

Could you or someone else elaborate a little bit more on what this
KlearScreen is, where can I get it, or what are the alternatives? (in
case it's not available in Europe). Also, suggestions on how to clean
AlBook's case/keyboard are also welcome -- this thing's getting dirty

Re: battery

2004-08-12 Thread Thomas Ethen
I have a Newer battery from OWC and it will hold a 3+ hour charge in real
world work on my Pismo, and just under 5 hours with extensive power saving.

I am looking for a battery for my iBook G3 12 for a reasonable price and
would welcome any advice.

Tom

The real premium batteries these days seem to be the ones from Newer, via OWC:
 http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=999Title=PowerBook%20Acces
 soriesTemplate=
According to this page, Apple's standard Lombard/Pismo batteries are
4800mAH. So the $159 Newer battery (6600 mAH) offers 65% more
capacity (roughly equivalent to time) than the $109 battery (4000
mAH). The latter would probably be fine for me, as I seldom use my PB
off the desk, but need more than the 10 minutes I now get when I do.

Re: powerbook/ibook reccomendation?

2004-06-21 Thread Thomas Ethen
If you are traveling light, a PCMCIA compact flash card reader takes up no
space and works far faster that USB.

Tom

Of course there are many uses for PC cards but does the average user really
need them today? Looking around campus (instructors, students, and
university owned) the biggest use I *now* see is adding current technologies
to older notebooks...firewire cards, for example.

The point I was making is that once upon a time having a PC card slot was
essential because notebooks lacked so many features. I well remember
spending big bucks to get a modem/network dual card so the Toshiba the
university expected me to use would actually be useful for more than keeping
a bit of my desk dust-free. But for typical usage I don't see the
 overwhelming need today.

Mine works best if I unplug my 2.4 Ghz phones, as the seem to really
interfere with the performance of my ABS.

 Yep, that's it.

You could try changing the channel to the other end, like a 1,2, or 3. This
will move the frequency farther away from where it is now, and maybe farther
from an interfering device. However, another device may have nothing to do
 with your problem.

When you change the frequency, you will just have to re-select the ABS out
of the wireless network list on your computer and log in again for it to
 work.

Re: iBook key pops off

2004-05-11 Thread Thomas Ethen
I replaced the key on my daughters Clamshell iBook which has the scissors
mechanism and it was an interesting experience getting the new key back on.
It would have been even more difficult if the keys had not been translucent
so I could see what I was doing.

You have to slide the front part of the scissors mechanism into place first,
then while holding it, place the back part of the mechanism into the two
holes on the keyboard one at a time. Dental tools work well to get under the
key, without dislodging the front and to hook each of the back arms to
direct them into the holes at the back.

Good luck!!

Re: WiFi range?

2004-05-09 Thread Thomas Ethen
On the card inside the ABS there is a small plug on the end, which if
removed will show a connector for an external antenna such as the one inside
a PowerBook. You can purchase the connector that goes from the card which
has a connector for a CB antenna on the other end(I got one on ebay quite a
while ago), which will give you range of between one half and two miles if
the antenna is placed high enough. You will have to modify the ABS case to
allow the cable to extend outside to be able to attach the external antenna.
There are also commercial antennas available for ABS which already have the
correct connector to plug onto your Airport card.

Tom

As I cannot return the ABS I'm ready to try an additional antenna but
my base station has no additional antenna port. What is the solution
 then?

 Greetings, Andre

I don't remember the exact address where I got the information, but I may
have it on my desktop, which I will check when I get home. Here is a ABS
with external antenna for sale on ebay, which may lead you to the source for
the antenna itself.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=44996item=3094857319
rd=1ssPageName=WDVW

Tom
Thank you Tom. Could you direct me to a source of such a commercial
antenna supplier? I vaguely remember an offer sometime back, before I
went wireless, where you had to drill a hole through the outer casing
of the ABS Extreme to accommodate the lead to the external antenna. The
 name and address escapes me.

Re: Clean Screens

2004-05-04 Thread Thomas Ethen
I find this quest for cheap solutions to be kind of strange, considering you
have hundreds if not thousands of dollars in your computer and you don't
want to use the product made for cleaning you screen because of a minimal
amount of money.

Hoodwipes cost me $1.05 each and I use them only about once a month if that,
which is about 3¢ a day to use a product that will not harm my LCD or my
laptop case. Why would I use some other product that may or may not do
damage to my computer to save that minimal amount of money?

Re: iBook G4 into a G3.

2004-04-16 Thread Thomas Ethen
Cute! You could fold it also.

Tom

Is it feasible to put the logic board of an iBook G4 14 into an ice
 iBook 12 dual USB.

After working into a few PowerBook models and seeing how tight the space is
in a laptop, I would imagine you would have to bend the board a little bit,
or maybe cut a couple of pieces here and there to make it fit. Of course, it
would probably not work anymore, but I'm sure it could fit!

Re: AirPort problem

2004-02-27 Thread Thomas Ethen
I thought that since the WaveLAN card comes in the ABS that you didn't need
any additional software to use it. I put a Compac PCMCIA card in a friends
Pismo and it worked just fine without any extra software.

Tom

I tried it in OS X but forgot that I needed drivers and I also forgot I
could have restarted in 9 to try it :-/

Re: New PB user questions

2004-02-24 Thread Thomas Ethen
I have all of my computers partitioned onto two sections, one with OSX and
one with OS 9.2.2. That way I can boot to either X or 9 and avoid the slow
processing in Classic, since 9 runs much faster on my computers.

Tom
It's not necessary to partition the drive; I keep both Classic and OS X
on the same volume in all of my system builds. I believe you bought a
15 Titanium G4, correct? If so, that computer WILL boot into OS 9 if
you want it to and if the drive had OS 9 drivers installed upon
initialization. BTW, I consider partitioning to be a religious matter.

Re: USB 2.0 to IDE 2.5 HDD enclosure trouble

I have five USB 1.0 drive enclosures (all left over's from upgrades) that I
use all the time with my Pismo's, my G/4 977, my G/4 9600 and my 8600 and
they all work flawlessly, but I had to install an extension that came with
the drives for them to work reliably. These are really inexpensive
enclosures ($16 ea) and they have worked well out of the box, so you may

You could probably save some money. I have a fairly wireless
household (Powerbook 800, Airport card in a G4 PPC and a Windows
box). I use a Buffalo Airstation wireless router (has 4 ethernet
connections as well as the wireless). Less than half the cost of the
Apple base station and works perfectly with the Macs.

Re: VHS to DVD

2004-01-04 Thread Thomas Ethen
Toast 6 does a direct DVD burn if you just want a straight through copy
without any editing, but you still need to convert the analog signal to
digital.

Tom
In my somewhat limited knowledge in this, you will need a DV bridge to
connect your VCR to your Titanium because as far as I know, there are no VCR
with FireWire output. Then, you will have to use something like iMovie to
put the raw footage coming from the VCR and finally, iDVD to create a
professionally looking DVD. I'm not sure if Toast can do that or not. Once
you mastered your DVD, I'm pretty sure you can make copies using Toast, but
I'm not sure you can author DVD with it.

Piranha was of absolutely no help at all during a year of basically one way
communication with them-I communicated, they failed to respond most of the
time.

Tom

Also, when trying to get a hold of Piranha, I eventually turned to the
Better Business Bureau in their area. The BBB told me they have a
history of not returning phone calls, emails going unanswered,
merchandise sent that is faulty, etc., etc. I told the BBB that
Pirahna is using the BBB logo on their website and that really caught
her interest. I would not do any business with them ... I thought I
was saving some bucks, now it's coming back to haunt me.

Re: OS10 sleep

2003-11-16 Thread Thomas Ethen
I have both 10.2 and 9.2 on my 977 G4 and both seem to run just fine, but
when I let the G4 go into sleep mode in 10, nothing will wake it from sleep
and I have to do a hard start to get it running again. Any ideas?

Re: Pismo processor

2003-10-20 Thread Thomas Ethen
I have a question for the list about switching processors in a Pismo. I have
acquired a 500MHZ G3 processor and want to exchange it for the 400MHZ
processor I now have in my Pismo. Is it a simple exchange, or do I have to
something other than just switching them?

Re: Pismo keyboard wobble

2003-09-26 Thread Thomas Ethen
I had the same problem with my Pismo on one of the many times I had the
keyboard off and could not see anything wrong with the way it was put back
on the Laptop. After quite a few tries, it suddenly fit perfectly, so there
was some obstruction somewhere that was causing the problem, and I would bet
that it is the same here. Check everything under the keyboard to see if it
is sticking up further than normal.

Tom

The Wallstreet and the Lombard/Pismo have completely different
keyboards, as well as different ways of locking them in place.

Re: Powerbook (firewire) power adaptor failure

I had both of my Yo-Yo adapters replaced by Apple and have had no problems

the winding caused quite a bit of stress on the cord where it met the
adapter.

While it boots fine to OS 8.6, it does not charge the battery and when
the power connector is disconnected, the time reverts to 1904. Do these
 things have a PRAM battery?

Does anyone have any experience taking these things apart? From my
Internet search, it would appear that it is not for the faint of heart,
but for $20 it may be worth the risk and learning experience!

The site from which I normally get manuals is down until tomorrow, and I
don't know if the take-apart is even available for this machine.
