I still have a couple of Mac friends who don't get it. We play the "learn the

Adapter for cig lighter

2005-07-21 Thread diane
Any recommendations on an adapter to use my iBook in the car? I see
that Linksys has one that will actually allow you to plug a 2 or
3-prong plug into it, while others (APC was one that I saw) just
allows you to plug the ibook into the lighter. The APC one is $40
while the others were $80.

TIA,

Re: New laptop possibility

2005-03-13 Thread diane
Hi Tim! The scary thing is that I was using a borrowed XP laptop on
the couch, and more than the G4 MDD. It's too easy to sit there and
surf, isn't it. ;)

Hopefully with the ibook I can get rid of the two machines I use for
my home business as well, providing I can get my cutter to work off
it. Worst case I keep the 6500 which isn't worth much on the open
market anyway!

Right now the book is a bit slower at only 256mb. When will Apple put
real ram in their machines? I upgraded the desktop to 1gb
right off the bat.

I have 2 iPods compliments of my SO. The 5gb 1G when it first came
out, and then xmas 03 for some reason he decided I needed a bigger
one so he got me the 40gb 3G. I hadn't even filled the 5gb yet.
Anyway, I do take them out blading, biking, running etc and even in
the car, depending on where I go, I'm a nervous wreck with them. I
think the Shuffle will put my mind at ease some. If he had bought it
for me without the 'book, I know I'd have the bigger one but honestly
neither of us will use it for more than 8 hours at a stretch!

I did find the 9.2 install on the cd's with the iBook. It's on the
repair cd, under install additional software. How odd is that, you'd
never find it unless you looked. Are your cd's like that or are they
complete 9.2 cd's? You may be able to twist my arm if that's the
case, esp if I need to keep the 6500.

Thanks for the offer and glad to know I'm not the only crazy one
sitting on the couch with a laptop. Not too good for the posture
though LOL

A new iBook should have OS 9 installed. If not it's on your restore
disks. Panther works fine with 9.1 if that's what you've got. Yes,
you should be able to get it off the G4 disks using Pacifist.

There is no 9.x folder at all, I searched for it. If 9.1 will work,
that is great, I know I have those in my piles o'cds!

I was really hoping to find a 14" but I suppose in a pinch this would
do, I would still do heavy editing on the 21" monitors attached to
the tower.

I can't seem to find the specs on the older ones on the Apple site,
any opinons on the price difference and airport/iLife?

How fast is wireless compared to 10 or 100BT these days? When I
looked into it years ago it was pretty slow.
Apple's airport base station supports up to 10 systems at 11 mbs,
shared, best case scenario. It isn't switched, which most wired
networks are these days so it'll end up slower than 10-base-t. At
farther distances your transmission rate will drop.

Of course 100BT will blow it out of the water.
The catch, of course is that even 11 Mbs shared is faster than
99.99% of home user's connection to the internet...

Thanks for the replies! One of the reasons I had discounted it for
the office network way back when (which you reminded me of) was that
the 100BT network was much quicker. But I had a friend recently ask
me for an opinion for home use with the internet and I drew a blank.
They do not have a home network, we do (again at 100BT)

Interesting to hear the facts from those that use it. :)

Looking for recommendations on secondary machine

2004-10-21 Thread diane
Hi folks,
I've been a Mac user since 1987 but always desktops. I currently run
a dual 1.42 FW800 machine (although I still use my Yikes! and PM6500
for my home business). Considering how long my other machines have
lasted, I expect this one to last for many years as well.

I've love to pickup an *book in the near future. Primary uses would
be Illustrator/Photoshop (have both OS9 & X versions), email, web and
maybe Quickbooks. I can see this being used for my business more than
personal use. I have an old 540C that I was using for QB and web
browsing but it's incredibly painful for the web.

Using X on it isn't a requirement but it would be nice (I still use 9
on the other two machines). I am using a 350mhz iMac at work with X
and it's slow, but tolerable. It only has 192mb so I think an
increase would speed it up.

Firewire and USB would be nice but I know I can add a card if I have
to. I don't have wireless at the house so it's not a necessity but
again, the ability to add it would be nice.

With that in mine I asked a friend who works with Macs if he knew
what the used prices were these days, the sites I used to use
(American Computer Exchange and one other) are now defunct.

He came back with a few machines that he, his family and friends may
be convinced to part with. In a nutshell they are:
Wallstreet
Original Blueberry iBook
iBook 600mhz (icebook from what I can tell)
Pismo 400mhz

A couple need batteries, the 600mhz needs a new combo drive, all are
running X right now.

It seems like400 mhz Pismo's are averaging $500 or so on ebay Some
Icebooks are going for over $600

Of course, with that in mind it's almost worth looking for closeouts
on new machines isn't it! Especially if you have to consider a
battery or additional RAM.

Is it even possible to get an X-capable *book for under $500?
Sorry for the long winded post but TIA for any advice!
Diane

How does a crossover cable differ?

2002-05-20 Thread Diane Gamm

A crossover cable was mentioned in a recent post for transferring files
between computers. I've wondered what the difference is between a
crossover and a regular ethernet cable. Can anyone enlighten me?
 Thanks! Diane

Re-awakening a Pismo?

2002-05-15 Thread Diane Gamm

Subject: Re: re-awakening a Pismo?

My used Pismo came not able to wake up from sleep - ever! I did quite a
bit of research to try to solve the problem, and there seems to be many
possible reasons and suggested solutions.

Mine turned out to be an extension problem. I believe it was Norton's
"disk light" extension (whatever that's supposed to do). I can't be
certain, as I disabled a few at the same time, but with the leaner
extension set it hasn't occurred once! If you haven't done so yet, I'd
suggest initialy seeing if it wakes after starting with a basic OS
extension set. Simplest place to start.

Apple has some resources on this apparently common problem - you can
find lots of info on other possible causes by doing a search on the
Apple Discussion boards. Also:

Good luck! It's a frustrating problem. - Diane

Re: Expansion Bay products

2002-05-11 Thread Diane Gamm

Does anyone know if you could put any other kind of drive (like CD-RW or
a hard drive) into one of the $20 Pismo Zip 100 expansion bay drive
casings? And if so, where do you get just the "innards" like Tom seems
to be talking about here. This is new territory for me. - Thanks, Diane

Common courtesy

2002-05-09 Thread Diane Gamm

Hi, as a new subscriber here, I have to agree that this comment - and a
few others I would consider disrespectful and arrogant - put me off as
well; wondering what kind of response I'll get if I ask a simple
question . . . I did appreciate the information that came with it, but
one has to learn it somewhere! I have a Mac but don't spend much of my
time researching company attitudes towards Macs. My $.02 worth - Diane

p.s. CompUSA has a Belkin wireless router on sale for $99 this week.

BG - No, the expansion bay drives for 99/00 models won't fit the
Wallstreet; it's a different model. Do a search on eBay for Wallstreet
and zip drive, and you can see the physical difference between those and
the later version. They seem to be available often on eBay, though not
as common as the Pismo model. Hope that helps, Diane

zip drives

2002-05-07 Thread Diane Gamm

Todd and others: thanks for the info on the Iomega zip drive problems
and cure. I had no idea the problems were that extensive! Ignorance
can be bliss I guess, at least temporarily. I've left all the Iomega
drives behind for someone else to manage and only have a VST zip
expansion bay now. I'm still going to do a better job at frequent
archiving to CD!

This looks like it will be a valuable discussion list! (I just joined.)
