TiBook display repair (follow-up)
hello listers, following up my previous posts some weeks ago concerning a TiBook with a dark display (after a bad cleaning action), I have finally got a replacement display assembly. My question I hope some tech on the list could address is: I'd like to test quickly if just replacing the display fixes the problem (the inverter could be fried as well) before taking the machine apart (which I've never done before). Say I connect the data cable to the logic board, the backlight cable directly to the inverter (bypassing the cable extension), do I risk damaging the display or backlight if the inverter is bad? Or is it a test I can carry out with no risk? cheers and thanks in advance for any help, gianfranco -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: TiBook 667 ID and wifi reception
Just to add my experience... I have both an 800MHz 15 Tibook and a 12 867MHz AlBook using AP and AP Extreme respectively. I live in a duplex apt with 6 concrete floors and cinder block walls. I can take these books to any part of the house, upstairs or downstairs and I have all the arcs showing full reception. I'm using a Belkin wireless router as the transmitter and everything has been functioning without drops or loss. So IOW, it may not be a problem at all? I seem to recall reading something about these along time ago, in reference to something inside that gets dislocated that could cause poor reception too. Maybe the antenna? As I remember, you could put whatever it was back into the proper place and reception would be much improved. I think I might do some googling on this.. I had asked a similar question some time ago and what I gathered from the replies was that the airport issue was fixed with the 867/1000 Titanium iteration. Maybe also the 800 was mentioned but I think the problem still existed in the 667. cheers, gianfranco -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: TiBook display replacement (was: TiBook display crisis)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (gianfranco sciacca) asked: My question to the list is: are displays and inverter boards / cables the same across the entire DVI range (667 MHz to 1GHz), or the 1GHz shares parts only with the 867 MHz? Hardware is the same across the DVI line, with the only difference (of which I'm aware) the typeface on the screen bezel changed between the two series. Data cables can be interchanged between any TiBooks, and inverters are interchangable across the DVI lines. ok, this was confirmed by the contact at pbparts suggested by Laurent and Bob. I hope to be able to pick up soon a DVI TiBook for parts and carry out the repair (Dan pages are an excellent help). I only have one additional doubt and a visit to local Apple centers did not help, as I got two different opinions. I turn the question to the list, hoping to clear the fog. I have said before that the screen light flashes briefly (not a full luminosity and with a gradient to zero towards the left of the screen) at startup, after waking from sleep and when detecting displays. Disconnecting the backlight cable, the flashing does not occur. I think this means (I guess) that the backlight bulb is still alive? If yes, does this rule out a display swap (thus leaving only the inverter as possible culprit - a straightforward and inexpensive repair), or there could be some other damage inside the display assembly. I know this is a quite specialised question, as a matter of fact these apple technicians I consulted had opposite opinions. Maybe some tech on the list could have a third opinion... Quite frankly, having examined the construction of the display assembly, I do not see where some liquid could penetrate inside (even though it *was* dripping on the screen) in order to damage it. The only place that seems conceivable to me, is the right speaker /secondary fan area, which is just next to the inverter connector to the logic board (although this is located at the back of the board). Thanks again for all the help, I hope to revive the beast in the near future. cheers, gianfranco -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... TiBook display replacement (was: TiBook display crisis)
Thanks to all who gave suggestions to try and tackle my 15 TiBook display problem. Unfortunately the display is still dark with brief flashing at startup and the explosion effect after shutting it down or sleeping it is visible also in daylight. A local Apple Centre gave me an approximate quote of up to EUR 1000 ($ 1200) for a display replacement. They would not consider the inverter as being the problem, which means that they will replace the display in any case, or in the worst case the display+inverter. This is economically not viable, so I consider looking for a defective machine with a good display to revive mine by myself (it's a 1GHz). My question to the list is: are displays and inverter boards / cables the same across the entire DVI range (667 MHz to 1GHz), or the 1GHz shares parts only with the 867 MHz? Scouring websites offering PB parts, I've come across contradictory information. Many do sell display assemblies working for 667 MHz to 1 GHz, others have separate parts for 667/800 and 867/1000. Useless to say, would anyone have a good display to throw away, throw it my way :-) cheers, gianfranco -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: TiBook display crisis
The briefly flashing screen, hissing sound, and uneven illumination suggests that your problem is with the inverter circuitry that drives the LCD backlight. If the other suggestions don't work out, replacing the inverter board might work ($84.50 at http://www.wegenermedia.com/titp.htm). Although the inverter is located under the optical drive in your model of PowerBook, cleaning fluid could have shorted the backlight connector. ok, following the suggestions, I let it rest for some 48 hours. I also pulled the bottom cover and visually inspected it just for the sake of it. No visible traces of anomalies. If I understand Ben's suggestion, some fluid might have shorted the backlight connector, thus damaging the circuitry at the inverter. Just to make sure I understand this right: fluid might have infiltrated in the display assembly, as I exclude that it could have reached the backlight connector at the inverter board. Could this lead to the problem you suggest? I ask this as I don't know how the circuitry looks like inside the display assembly. I just add a few details in the hope that someone with experience with LCDs could catch a hint: currently the machine seems to work all fine, S-video out works OK. I could not try an external display, but I assume it would work as well. The PB display now flashes briefly with some luminosity at the right side fading to black towards the left side when powered up (startup), after waking from sleep, after changing resolution. The hissing sound no longer occurs. Then again the flashing is no longer at max luminosity. Bulb fried as well? An oddity I have noticed is the following: I have run the machine in the evening with a light pointed towards the screen in order to be able to see the minimum to click around with the mouse. I have noticed that when shutting down or putting it to sleep, the display first goes pitch black, after a second or so a sort of dark yellowish light (very low intensity) diffuses from the top right area to cover the entire screen area in 2 or 3 seconds. It resembles a screen saver featuring an explosion! The screen then stays like this, i.e. not pitch black. This is to be seen only when shining a light towards the screen, it may be as well normal and one does not see this during normal operation. Of course I can see nearly nothing else if not pointing a light to it, but it's certainly not the normal way to run a PowerBook! An Apple centre would ask me to leave the machine for a quote on the repair, which would cost me already quite an amount, so before doing that I hope to be able to figure out whether the problem lies simply with the inverter board or if more likely the display must be replaced, hoping to do it myself. Well, I've heard that the latter is quite a job, opening the display assembly is a half-nightmare. By the way, can the clutch covers be removed and replaced simply by removing/replacing the two screws securing each of them? Or is some gluing involved? Thanks again for any advice and cheers, gianfranco -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
