Re: HOWTO Boot Powerbook from Firewire drive

2006-01-06 Thread R Michael Vogt
I look at superDuper and I have used Carbon Cloner. Bu If you are
using Tiger There is better and faster way All you have to do is go
into Utilities then go to Restore drag the source disk to the first
blank then destaion to second blank then hit restore and it will
make duplicate of your start drive

It works great.

At least, that is, I think it does.

Truth is, I don't know if it would actually boot if I needed to,
and now that I've Googled around a bit, I can't seem to find out
for sure.

The closest I've found is this:

Command-Shift-Option-Delete bypasses the disk selected in the
Startup Disk control panel in favor of an external device or from
CD-ROM (on older Macs). This is also useful if your main hard disk
is having problems and you need to start up from another device.
(On some PowerBooks, however, this key combination merely ignores
the internal drive, which isn't as useful.)

source:

http://www.jacsoft.co.nz/Tech_Notes/Mac_Keys.htm#Command-Shift-
Option-Delete

I'd like to find something on Apple's website. I tried searching
there and had no luck there either.

It's not the sort of thing I'm want to try without a little
assurance I'm on the right track.

Got it!
play Speed Racer theme
Go get the download here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/racemanager/
RaceTrackInstallAllPlatforms.jar?download

This will download an installer that will run along looking fine until
the end then complain that 'serious errors have occurred'.

Ignore it.
Also, just accept the defaults when you install it, it seems to hang
if you want to choose a different directory or something.

Then start terminal.
By default terminal opens in your Home directory. The program was
installed in a folder called RaceTrack...

type 'cd RaceTrack' and hit enter.
Then enter the following (all as one line!)
java -cp
ThirdParty/hsqldb/hsqldb.jar:ThirdParty/commapi/comm.jar:classes
net.sourceforge.racemanager.race.Manager

The app should start up pretty quickly.
(also check the help message forum at
http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=94445 as there's some
weirdness about reports, I think...)

Go speed racer!...

Well, my instant vision was stacks and stacks of old Mac pluses
holding up the track ;-P My second was of a Mini with those skinny
plastic wheels on it...

My second thought was I doubt there's something out there *specific*
to a Pine Wood Derby, but it's a competition of players who have
scores (in this case times) with multiple rounds of competition,
there's a host of tournament scoring systems out there.

googlegooglegoogle
My third thought was, well I'll be gobsmacked.
http://racemanager.sourceforge.net/
Race Track is a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Race Management Application.
It supports racer registration, heat scheduling, electronic timer
integration, and sound effect playback. It is written in Java and runs
on any Java enabled platform.

This means OS X works.

I'm assuming, since you mention 'Carbon Copy Cloner', that you're
referring
to OS X.

If that's the case, then know that when I got my PowerBook G4 17, I
cloned
the Mac OS X system partition on my PowerBook G3 Pismo and restored it
over
the PowerBook 17 internal hard disk (which I did while in FireWire
target
mode). Since my PowerBook G3 Pismo didn't have some G4-based
applications
(like GarageBand), after I checked that the cloning was successful and
that
I could boot the 17, I then proceeded to install the missing
applications
from the installation DVD that came with the 17.

I've been using my PowerBook 17 for over a month now without any
adverse
effect.

I believe that, except for some applications, the OS X system
installation
is always the same no matter what the target Macintosh is. For
instance, all
installations I've done on various Macintosh have all the video card
drivers
for all the cards supported by Mac OS X, no matter if a given card
would be
usable in that Macintosh or not.

So, if OS X runs fine on your iBook G3, then it should work fine on
your
iBook G4...

One thing is that the Pismo has 100MHZ bus speed and I see that G3

I was wondering if runs panther better and you can also have gig of
ram in the pismo and 640 in the Ibooks

Thats great to know if you go to the spec sheet or macTracker it does
not talk about that if that is right I might move up to one of the
ibooks instead of the Pismo I use the DVD part alot and I like
panther . right now I have Lombard 400 I have used VLC but still a
little choppie when you play back a DVD so I put 9.2 on and use the
apple player just DVD play back then boot back to Panther for all my
other stuff now VLC works great SVCDs

are happy with the end result (with some post-installation repairs),
Norton Utilities (including the December 22nd 8.01 update) does not
seem
to agree and seems to identify spurious errors.

Two questions from this. What has been others' experience with Norton
Utilities and Panther? Second, what would you recommend as an
alternative to Norton's Speed Disk for defragmenting files with
Panther?

Norton - with or without Panther - is on my short list of software I
wouldn't give to my worst enemy. At one time it was the first tool I
turned
to when hard drive disaster struck. That ended about the same time that
Apple released OS 8.5

I am running 9.2.2 and I have DVD Player version 1.3 but it still
won't play. Comes up with an error stating it can't read the dvd.
Could this be some sort of Extension conflict? Video Player ext is on
but still no luck.

I had Jag on my Lombard and if you want to use you DVD you need to

use OSX on my 600 mhz imac, and am getting used to it (have to admit,
it is sometimes a struggle), i'm wondering if i should backtrack with
the powerbook and use only the old OS.(as in uninstall the OSX).
Understand the bronze wasn't loaded with X when produced and am
always leery of upgrading past a computers capabilities?
Any info would be appreciated.
Panther should work on the Lombard. Unless all the applications you're
using
are only available for the old Mac OS, I don't see any reason to stay
with
the old Mac OS. It hasn't been updated since a couple of years and
there are
less and less applications that are updated for it.

Re: Office Mac software query using OS 9/10 on the PISMO... help required

2003-10-24 Thread michael Vogt
you can use mac office 2001 and it will work in classic if your in X
I'm not sure about Mac office 98
now in your post you mention office 2000 that is a pc thing only and
you would need VPC to run it and I would get version 5 or 6 If You are
going to use x all the time I would look for Office X some where

G'day Guys,

I have a PISMO running OS 9.1 and I would like to buy (dare I say
it...) MS Office for the Mac,
so that I can work from home (I have to use WinTels @ work
unfortunately).

I've just brought OS X 10.2 and would like to know if I can run Office
98, (or possibly Office 2000) whilst using my new OS?

Can this software be used normally in OS X, or do you have to run it
in OS X classic mode,
or can it ONLY be used in OS 9.1?

Does any else run Office 98/2000 in OS X 10.2 and what problems or
bugs have you found in doing this?

Alternatively would I be best off splashing out and buying Office v. X
and ending all my troubles and concerns? I'd rather not as is quite
expensive considering the cost of AppleWorks.
