PowerMac G5 1.6 or 1.8 gig single?

2005-06-23 Thread simon goslin

G'day,

I'm just about to part with my hard earned cash and buy an ex-demo G5 tower
and wondered which was the better option: the 1.6 or 1.8 gig single?

Do you own one of the above machines and if so what issues (if any) have you
had with it over the last couple of years?

I've heard that are slight problems with the fan (ie it's a bit noisy now
and then), is this something to be concerned about and should I ask the
Apple Reseller to sort it out before I buy? It comes with a 12 month
warranty so hopefully I should be covered if things go t i t s up...

I currently have a Pismo which is cool as but a little on the slow side now
that I'm really starting to get to grips with Adobe's Creative Suite for
Graphic Design and Mapping work.

What about running Virtual PC on it, or is this a big no-no? I'm forced to
use PC's at work for GIS and mapping work; as ESRI, MapInfo, et al, can't
see past the end of their noses' and think that there is only one OS/Pl!
atform in the world, but that's another story (there loss, not mine)...

I think it will be a while before I outgrow the G5 me finx *:)

Any help/advice/thoughts would be most appreciated.

Cheers guys (and girls),

Simon

powerbook g3 pismo battery problem

2005-06-08 Thread simon goslin

g'day,

the battery in my pismo (powerbook g3 firewire) has just died (m7318) and i
wondered if it

has anything to do with the recent os upgrade i performed (10.2 to 10.3)?

everything was fine until i upgraded a couple of weeks ago and now it's as
dead as a dodo.

is this a strange coincedence or just a case of bad timing?

are there any tests in os x i can perform to see if it has really died or if
it's something else?
i can't run apple's battery reset 2.0 as i no longer have classic on my
machine due to

storage constraints.

i'm just about to buy a quicksilver (powermac g4) and can't really afford to
replace the
battery yet. does it matter if leave the battery left in the slot until i
have sufficient funds to

obtain a replacement or should i remove it completely?

finally can anyone recommend a good replacement for the m7318 that holds
around 5-6 hours of charge as most of the one's i've seen on the web only
seem to last for 2-3 hours?

cheers,

simon

2004-09-30 Thread simon goslin
G'day,
My iSync and .Mac problem is no more...
Check out: www.mac.com and you'll see why.
Thanks for warning in advance us Apple!
250mb (125mb email, 125mb iDisk) storage limit and 10mb email attachment is
way over due.
It just goes to show what people power can do as this forum has been going
strong on www.apple.com discussions for some time now.

I also had trouble, but I think it started Sunday night when I was trying
to download an iTunes song and my password wouldn't work. I asked to be
reminded of my password, but it didn't recognize my username. So then I
went to dotMac to explain the situation in an e-mail, but have not received
a reply. I've since bought the CD at the bookstore, so I don't need to try
iTunes again for now. I still can't download my e-mail because it wants me
to confirm my password, yet tells me it's incorrect. I paid dotMac's year
membership nearly three months ago, and now it behaves as if I'm not in the
system at all. Weird... Since I'm not really using that address yet, I
can wait it out and see what happens. The scary thing, though, is if iSync
isn't working. The first time I iSync'd my PB with my iMac, I erased the
filled calendar rather than filling the empty calendar - not sure exactly
what I did wrong there. However, that's the risk I feel I'm taking each
time I iSync. It hasn't happened again, but it seems as if this sort of
Apple glitch could cause that. How do you back up iCal and Address Book,
anyway?- - - Claire

 Hey Simon...
A more incisive interpretation of my travails yesterday would,
reasonably, indicate that this has been an ongoing problem with the
SERVICE for some of us for some time; and, more to the point that, what
APPLE laughingly offers for TECH SUPPORT, such-as-it-is, in this area
is blissfully, (and dangerously), ignorant of the problem.
As of now, my iSync only works sporadically, and my iDisk not at all.
eMail is a mess, and it'll be some-time before I know how many
Accounts I've been 'Bounced-Off of.
I too had some of these problems today, but my iSync problemo
has been occuring for the last week or so and it's really annoying.
dotMAC's been having major MAINFRAME?) problems for the last 24hr or
so.
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' went down 11:00 PM last night for many of us and
'Locked' us 'Out' of the SYSTEM till after 02:00 PM this afternoon.
iDisk, Bounced Mail, the whole 9yards.
I spent over 3 hours this afternoon 'sloshing' thru APPLE's,
'Worst-in-the-Industry's', live Tech and Account Support system, only
to find, after 8 different assistants and supervisors, that no one
there had a clue that there was anything wrong.
G'day Guys,

I was actually on the phone with a 'Senior' Tech Support staffer, who was

I received a chagrined apology.
I DON'T know what 10:00 AM location they're referring to above, but MY
System began to 'come-back Up' at 06:00 PM my time, and is still not 100%.

Pismo boot up problem

2004-03-08 Thread simon goslin
G'day,

Ocassionally my Pismo refuses to boot up, or do anything for that matter.

Any ideas on how to prevent this, or recify it?

I've tried ejecting the battery and restarting but to no avail.

Then after unplugging and replugging in all the leads it works, sometimes...

This has only happened 2 or 3 times but it's really annoying to say the
least.

I'm running 10.2.8 on a 400 mhz powerbook pismo g3.

Cheers,

Simon

This is the link in question...

Appartently if your bid is sucessfull you'll get the instructions on how to

Sounds way too dodgy to me, but I just wondered if anyone out there had seen
it and proceeded.

According to the blurb on the Apple webbo, it's only for 10.3, but can it be

If not, is Apple planning to release an upgrade version for 10.2 users?

Re: GPS software

2004-02-05 Thread simon goslin
Pat,

What are we looking at?

The page has been removed to which you are refering to.

I would be interested in seeing what it is as I'm trying to set up my GPS on
my Pismo.

Cheers,

Simon

I have been looking into GPS software for OS X I believe I have found
most everything out there. There are a few people over at geocaching.com
that are developing software, but it would be great to have Garmin's apps
work natively in OS X. I found this while searching

   http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/3215.1.12398727029410847560/
macsignup.html

If you would, check it out and if you feel the need, sign it. It is
definitely a worthy cause.

Thanks for the help!!!

Import Hotmail address book into Mac Mail app - advice required

2004-02-02 Thread simon goslin
G'day,

I have a PISMO running OSX 10.2.8 and I've just splashed out and bought
a .Mac email account.

I'd like to somehow import my address list from Hotmail into my .Mac
account and kill off the MS spam generator once and for all.

I noticed in Mac Address Book that you can import vCards and LDIF (?)...

How do I go out doing this as I've several hundred address and
inputting them one-by-one would take rather along time, me thinks.

Has anyone done this and if so, how?

Cheers,

Simon

Ram upgrade enquiry on the Pismo

2004-01-22 Thread simon goslin
Howdy!

I currently have 128mb of ram installed on my Pismo and it's suffering
slightly with multiple applications running in OSX 10.2.8.

According to the manual the max limit is 512mb but I've heard that some of
you out there have increased this to 1Gb. If so, which chips did you use
and did you have any problems arising as a result of this, and what were
they?

If I upgraded to 512mb should I buy 2x256mb chips or 1x512mb? Does it make
any difference performance wise?

Finally if anyone has some spare pc100 chips they no longer require please
drop me a line!

Cheers,

Simon

GIS/mapping software and the Apple Mac

2004-01-04 Thread simon goslin
G'day!

Does anyone out there use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and/or
mapping applications on the Apple Mac?

I have a Pismo running OS X 10.2.8 and would like to obtain some GIS
software for work at home.
I use ArcGIS suite (v 8.3) and MapInfo Professional (v 7.0) @ work on those
$hitty windoze things...

I have heard that ESRI's ArcView software can be used on the Mac.
Does anyone know where I can obtain version 3.0 from, or does anyone have a
copy for sale out there?

I've seen that a University in the US has/had MapInfo running on their Macs
but don't know which version they use or if it's still available - MapInfo
can't/won't reply to my emails.
Above question applies.

What about other GIS/mapping software?

Grass seems pretty good from the website info, but what's it like in the
flesh and is it worth the $$$?
I had trouble installing OpenOffice (another open source program) using x11
and unix and gave up so I'm now using ThinkFree Office - is Grass just as
complex to install?

Any others out there worth investigating?

Cheers guys,

Simon
