Re: Anyone still using the Powerbook G3 Kanga Original

2005-02-03 Thread starfleet52
I have a kanga with a 5GB HD os 9.2.2 64MB
Ram and it has to be one of the best laptops I have used.
Only problem is finding the ram for it and the expansion bay the minimum for
that would be floppy and CD. I don't use mine any ore due to the screen
becoming cracked by my foot back in January of this year. But it was a great
laptop with very little flaws but the flaws are there. It lacks USB ports
but has Serial ADB and SCSI. Its proscessor is slower than a 250MHZ
Wallstreet or even a 233 with L2 Wallstreet. If you are strapped for cash I
recommend it it served me well and I have plans to replace its screen
eventually.

hi all,

Anyone still use one of these?:

I'd love to get my hands on a good unit but they are very hard to find in
Singapore. Any users care to share their experiences with the Kanga?

I have an immaculate Kanga that I use as a backup in
case my 12 G4 goes down, or for when I get fits of
nostalgia and want to play Marathon or Doom II.

It is still a nice machine, though it is very thick
and heavy by today's standards.

Mine only 32MB of ram, so I'm using OS 8.6 and both
RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler with great results.

If my G4 ever did have problems, this makes a fine
substitute, as it runs Office 2001 very well, gets
right on the wireless network with the cheap Lucent
card I bought last year, and overall feels just as
fast or faster (old OS and apps will do that) than the
new machine.

Re: Less is more- a little story (Gather 'round!)

2004-12-31 Thread starfleet52
I have a happier tale that involves replacing a Powerbook

Lets go back to well early September 2004 I being a student in HS need a
laptop due to my bad handwriting. First laptop was a Thinkpad 755cd that
lasted from 9/03-9/04 I bought a Powerbook 5300ce that lasted me until its
flaws started to show their ugly heads. The keyboard cable broke in an
expedition to repair it so it was useless even if I replaced the damaged
power connectors. In October 2004 I bought off eBay a G3 kanga and I have
been happy with it ever since with 64MB ram and the 250MHZ G3 it outperforms
my old 117MHZ 5300. Just goes to show you a old 7.7LB Powerbook can still
make you happy even 7 years after it was built.

Hey all,

My bronze Gbook and I-- You couldn't separate us, and I just flat out
loved that machine. All it took was some terrible circumstances and a
shady motherfucker like my ex-roomate's boyfriend, and that was the end
of the romance. Several days later, I had to watch as lombard parts
went up on ebay from some undisclosed place in jersey, painfully aware,
but unable to prove, that they were probably the remnants of my
computer. (Nothing that was sold could be tracked back to mine, but I
knew the guy lived in jersey. My keyboard was partly broken, and the
only part not listed was --drum roll--- the keyboard. Bastard.)

So, friendly reminder from an ex-owner of the world's best laptop-
watch your stuff, don't even think for a SECOND to let it out of your
sight. It WILL walk.

Since then, I bought a 12 ibook. Yeah, it rocks and it was really
cheap (799), but I miss those sexy curves and jaw-dropping matte black
case. I took so much pride in having the last version of an apple
laptop with the upside-down illuminated apple-- just seeing the right
side up one on my ibook is a constant sore reminder.

Someday when I'm not a poor college kid, I'm going to buy one for
myself again. Its up to you guys to keep them in good shape, so when
you're ready to move on to a G5 'book, I'll be ready with a loving
home.

Take care,
-dylan

Re: Aluminum and Alzheimer's

2004-12-02 Thread starfleet52
IF your worried go and sell the Aluminum Ibook and get one made out of
regular plastic and you will no longer about the very evil aluminum. But
aluminum was never linked to any disease and it is a myth about aluminum
that you are worried about.

Quote From Website

Most experts will tell you, however, that aluminum is not a cause of
Alzheimer's disease. You can safely continue using your antiperspirants,
drink the city water (aluminum is used in some water systems to remove
silt), wrap left-overs in aluminum foil, take antacids, and cook with your
aluminum pots and pans.

If you're that concerned, this is a question that you should be
asking of your personal physician, not here.

Okay, here we go, I've wanted to post this question for a long time,
but it seems somewhat inflammitory, at least on another forum.

Is there the possibility of absorbing aluminum through your skin from
the palmrest of the AlBook? I've heard people complain of corrosion
on the AlBook due to contact with sweat from the skin, so it seems
like a possibility that aluminum molecules are being disloged.

I know the links to alzheimer's disease are debated, but I
personally don't cook on aluminum or drink from aluminum soda cans.
Seems to me the TiBook would be safer.

Exterminate all rational thought.

Re: Pismo top half on a Wallstreet?

2004-11-22 Thread starfleet52
It isnt like on the old 5300/190 and 3400/Kanga Series where the 2 models
that make up the line share major parts we all know the 190 can be upgraded
with a Logic board and screen swap and the 3400 can become a G3 with the
Kanga logic board swap.
