Re: Pismo Power Jack

2006-02-15 Thread themacuser
The 12 PowerBook has a 45W supply. The iBook 12 does as well, and
the 14 one (I think, I only have a 12 PB).
The 65W adaptors work fine on the 45W machine - they both supply 24
volts, and should be just the same.

On 16/02/2006, at 8:53 AM, Malcolm Cornelius wrote:

methinks, and could potentially be harmful to your old PowerBook.

Laurent is correct on this one. The G4 PowerBooks use a 65W power
supply, compared to the 45W supply of the G3 series. The voltage is
the same 24V, though. I'd advise keeping on with the YoYo, but that's
just me.

The early G4s were 45W, as are all the iBooks AFAIK.

Wattage isn't critical here, the adapter which can supply 65W will
work fine

with a 45W machine.

Open Firmware for controlling hardware. Open Firmware is a

the model number is between something and something then the part
should be replaced with some part number as a warranty repair.

I have had to call them again (I'm sure my mom's PC was the

I couldn't ask for more from Linksys.

I steer people away from Linksys, I've heard bad things about their
reliability and features. D-Link seems okay as is Netgear.

Oh boy do I agree here. We completely stopped carrying Linksys
products this year due to their flaky wireless routers.

As long as you don't need their support, you're fine. But if you
ever need
to call them and tell them that you're using it with a Macintosh,
they will

almost hang up on you.

FYI, Over the period of two years, I had 2 Linksys cable/dsl
routers. Both
stopped functioning without any apparent reasons. Right after the
warranty
ended up. I decided to go with D-Link and so far, after a little
bit over a
year, it's still running fine. They were all Ethernet routers, not
wireless,

though.

YMMV...

I've done it, it's not easy. Hacksaw the plastic case of the plug

Re: Ubuntu on PB rev2

2005-08-25 Thread themacuser
There is a way of using Ubuntu on an old-world machine. It can be
done with Ubuntu I know, but it's slightly tricky. I'm not sure
exactly what it is.

A G3-233 is an old-world machine. Old world machines are harder to
get linux

onto.
I think Ubuntu doesn't support old-world machines.
In general, you'll probably find a distro release that is 3 or more
years old
will install more smoothly on an oldworld machine. Also, you may
need to make

boot floppies.

NeoOffice works fine and would be well worth $100. Get that, and use

Get Office.

$99 after $50 rebate at http://store.apple.com/

I'm no MS fan, but it's a nice package, well worth the $100.

NeoOffice/J takes **forever** to load on my 1.5Ghz PBook w/ 1Gb ram.

Word is nearly instant.

Re: Hard Drive Replacement

2005-08-21 Thread themacuser

Come on, I loaded it onto a 4GB drive. Now that's cramped!
On 21/08/2005, at 2:59 PM, Clark Martin wrote:

I just loaded Tiger onto my G3 Dual-USB iBook with the 9.24GB

HD and I realize I barely have breathing room left.

Two questions:

1. Can a reasonably handy person (rebuilt the carburetor for
my 1965

Mustang once) replace the HD in this model iBook?

Never worked on a Mustang (horse, plane nor car). But I have
rebuilt a '69 Toyota's carburetor and replaced an iBook's HD. The
carburetor is easier.

The key is to get a good set of take apart instructions for the
iBook then tape every screw as you remove it to the instructions in
the appropriate location.

When I did it I lined up all the screws in a row but as I was
putting it back together there was one screw I just couldn't find a
place to put back. There were about 65 screws.

2. Can anyone recommend a HD?

I went to http://www.pbparts.com/shop/ and found an 80 GB
Hard Drive
(Toshiba 5400RPM): This Toshiba 80GB 5400RPM drive has a huge
16MB buffer,
improved noise reduction, and low power consumption. Here is a
link to specs
for the 8026GAX. This drive has a three year warranty from Toshiba
Note:

This drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops. 8026GAX.

At the same site, also found: This is a Hitachi Travelstar
7K60 60GB
7200RPM 2.5in ATA-6 Mobile Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer. Here is the
spec PDF for
the Hitachi Travelstar 7K60. This drive is equiped with a large
8MB Data
Buffer and a 7200 RPM Spindle Speed for increased performance.
Note: This

drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops.

Would I see a noticeable difference in the 7200 vice the 5400
RPM drive?

This thing is already running very slow when compared to my G5 iMac.

The iBook now has an IBM-DJSA-210 HD, according to System
Profiler, and
when I looked it up online, I found that it runs at 4200RPM. So,
5400 would

be an improvement; 7200 would be a vast improvement, no??

Suggestions gratefully accepted and many thanks.

They both sound good. I'm not sure if the ATA-6 is okay or not,
there is a problem with some version of ATA but I don't know what
it is.

I have used a Travelstar inthe past on a Wallstreet.

Re: security on wireless router

2005-07-02 Thread themacuser
Correction: The AirPort Extreme card can't. The normal AirPort card
can. Most 3rd party USB/PCMCIA ones can on Macs with the supported
chipsets. And it's RFMon mode, not promiscuous mode. Promiscuous mode
is getting all the packets on a network. RFmon mode is getting all
the packets from every network.

The bad news it, its pretty trivial for anyone to do anything, no
matter what security you set. It used to take 100k packets or so
for them to be able to decrypt the WEP encoding but new software
can usually do it in a few seconds now.

MAC address restrictions are fine but if someone has their card in
promiscuous mode, they can see what MAC addresses are being allowed
'cos that part is sent in the clear, outside of any WEP
encryption. And then they just clone the address of someone who is
allowed.

Mac users are at a disadvantage for hacking into other peoples'
base stations, the Airport card cannot be put into a promiscous
mode (where it reads and records all traffic) unlike regular
cards. so if your neighbors are al Mac users, turn on MAC address
filtering and you are free from them, anyway :)

I use MAC address filtering, without WEP, and figure it's good
enough. If someone wanted in, or to snoop, they are in, I just
make it a little hard for regular folks and it's enough to keep
most out.

IMO the most important thing for you to do for real security is
make sure your base station has remote administration turned off;
so people on the wired internet cannot try and telnet into it (and
believe me, they will). Setting up MAC filtering or WEP is helpful
but not really that protective.

HTH.

iTunes

for instance, go with the G3. The extra 100Mhz will make more of a
difference in most operations. Plus it runs cooler.

XPostFacto is what you mean and you will need to do that from Mac OS 9.
Then you use it to boot the 10.3 installation disk.

You don't need to install 10.2 first. In fact, when I went from 10.2 to
10.3, I did backup key files in my home directory and just formatted
my OS X
partition before installing 10.3. It just ensures that no garbage

left over.

As for Xpost Facto (that's what I think you mean), I don't know about
it so
I can't comment on its installation.

Re: **NEW** 14 1.33Ghz G4 iBook for Sale

2005-04-27 Thread themacuser
Where are you at? I will make a note not to ever go there if they
require a PC laptop...
On 28/04/2005, at 06:13, Simon Tang wrote:

Hi all,
I have a brand new iBook for sale. New as in direct factory unit from
Apple, just shipped to me from Taiwan, package unopened, and the
AppleCare warranty will start the day you get your machine.
The reason that I'm selling:
This is a replacement unit for an iBook G4 933 which has gone under
the knife 3 times. In the upcoming semester, my courses will require
a PC laptop, so I have to sell this unit in order to accomodate the
course software requirements.
The basic specs:
1.33GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @ 1.33GHz
14-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
512MB DDR266 SDRAM == Upgraded from factory
60GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory
AirPort Extreme built-in
NOT REFURBISHED -- COMPLETELY NEW UNIT
This same unit w/ 256M RAM is offered through Amazon at $1299 shipped
w/ a $100 rebate, and $1199 + tax ($72 - 110 depending on where you
live) through Apple Education. Or $1299 + tax for those who like to
shop retail.
Cost
I will let this unit w/ the 512M RAM go for $1200 shipped w/ full
insurance via UPS 3-Day Select.
Payment/Transaction details
Due to recent mishaps with Paypal, I will no longer be able to accept
paypal payments. Thus only good ol' fashion check or money order will
be accepted.
Since this is a fairly large transaction, I will be open to shipping
to an impartial third party to act as an escrow, and I will be willing
to split up to half of the associated shipping fees.
Local pickup would obviously be best. This unit is located in Troy,
NY (upstate near Albany, NY). I will give a shipping discount for
local pickups ($1150).
Misc
This unit is completely new, with the labels still intact, and I have
not opened it as such. If you would like me to open to inspect, I can,
but only for serious buyers since the warranty will start the day it
is opened -- and if this sits here for a week, then the buyer will
lose a week of warranty. Obviously, any problems will go through
Apple, and I will be happy to assist w/ the process in whatever way I
can.
Tiger
This unit qualifies for a Tiger upgrade. I have ordered the disks (so
you don't have to), and I will ship you the new version of OS X once I
receive it in a few days for no additional cost!!
Please email me directly to minimize spam to the list, thanks.

In all seriousness, learning some basic UNIX commands is incredibly

Or just 4, ground and 3 phases.
In the US 208V 3ph is usually wired delta so there is no neutral.
2 phase is used and does exist. It's just a center tapped
transformer. The fact that the two phases are 180 degrees apart is
what makes them two phases.

Throw away an (almost) perfectly good powerbook? I'll have it if you're
throwing it out...

It very likely doesn't like one of the modules in the 'wrong' slot.
Also do alt-apple - O - F just after the BONG and when you get a
DOS-like screen type 'reset-nvram' then hit return.

Can also type 'reset-all' instead.
Or, better still, throw the damn thing away. Sounds like a nightmare.

But they list clamshell iBooks which had 4MB of Video RAM and up to

466MHz processors with a max of what 768MB RAM?

I can’t imagine running OS X on a clamshell, which is limited to

both connectors must be wired in the exact same order. Keeping the

pin 2 to pin 2 and so on.

The crossover cable (direct connect, computer to computer) is a

Re: Lombard, Pismo LCD

Is a Lombard screen assembly interchangeable with a Pismo, or do they
have
different connectors on the motherboard?

I just use my server space provided for free from my ISP. I have a

don't have to worry about ads. I use a simple but powerful FTP

offer with your account. For example, DSL Extreme offers 25 megabytes
of server space for each email account, giving 10 email accounts.
Earthlink offers 8 email accounts with up to 10 megabytes of server
space for each account. Charter has 10 email accounts with up to 10

Use Macstumbler or iStumbler or Kismac (or for classic users,
ClassicStumbler) to find networks, it's MUCH easier.

My latest PB is the first one with a wireless option. I'm pretty much
ignorant about how it works to simply sit outside a library and tap
into their network. Don't I need a password and stuff like that in
order to get on line?
Lawrence
Lawrence,
Last Christmas eve, we were driving through a small ski town in
northern New Mexico, planning to ski Christmas Day. It was late and
everything was closed, so it was impossible to ask around to find
decently-priced accommodations (the resort wanted $217/night). So, my
son on his PC and my other son on my PowerBook looked for a signal as
I slowly drove down the main street in that town. About every other
business gave off a signal that reached the street, and about every
third signal did not require a password. We went to Orbit and found
our sleeping accommodations for the night, in another small town 10
miles down the road (paid $45/night). From there, we got MapQuest's
help for directions, and took a screen capture of it.

Just click your Airport signal in the menu bar. It will automatically
list in black any signal that reaches your computer. Click one to see
if it requires a password. If it does, close the window, drive a
little further and try again.

From my house, I sometimes have a second signal to show up as
available. It requires a password. I have no idea whose it is.
Also, my neighbor's signal sometimes shows up if I'm in my front or
back yard.

Re: max ram for Wallstreet?

2005-04-01 Thread themacuser
Just because Apple never fully tested 512 doesn't mean it can't be
done. They haven't fully tested 512s so they just say 192 is the
maximum because they don't want heaps of people asking for support if
their 512 screws up.

512mb.
BUT on the Apple site I see 192mb given as the max, 1 128 in the upper
slot, and a 64mb in the lower. So I'm wondering why the discrepancy
and who
is right?
I think you can go up to 512MB in a Wallstreet. The Apple web site
lists
192MB because at the time when the Wallstreet was introduced, the
density of
the memory chips didn't allow for greater than 192MB.

An external antenna will probably do your job if your base station

Me too, never seen a machine with bad VRAM that was variable.
Get it opened up and check the cables.

upgrade went through well apparently until time to reboot. Now it
kernel panics.

Following Apple's documentation, I've reset NVRAM PRAM and tried to
boot from the Mac OS X.2 install disc. When this happens, it boots to
the gray apple, then I get video problems (once an overly bright
screen wash, once lots of verticle gray lines) and a freeze. A soft
restart is possible (Apple-ctrl-Power), so I've not reset the PMU.

Reseat your RAM, possibly replace it...such kernel panics are usually
related to poor ram. (although if you had OS 10.1 installed it should
have given you hassles before.)

It could also well be a munged upgrade. Try resetting the PRAM three
or four times in a row (hold down control-alt-p-r until it bongs that
many times. Some people recommend ten times for particularly resilient
NVRAM resets)

That is correct. USB uses 7-bit addressing = 128 devices, 1 of them is
the computer = 127 devices.

I'm no USB expert, but I strongly suspect the limitation comes from
the way USB devices are addressed. Each device on the bus needs to
have its own unique identifier, so that the host can exchange data
with it. Due to whatever addressing scheme the designers of USB came
up with, it's simply not possible to have more than 127 devices
connected to a host at any given time.

DVD drives with the decoder card included go for about US$80-100 on

I use Sidetrack on my laptop. In addition to its primary purpose of

YES! SideTrack does not work on the new PowerBooks - different
