Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks

2004-04-29 Thread Wayne
Apple are too often no too smart with warranty issues or just giving good
service. In the long run they loose out because of this.
It doesn't matter how other companies behave because they don't have
 the same small market share.

Small market share for the iPod? According to eWeek, Apple is the demanding
leader in the MP3 player market of any company. Apple sold more iPods in one
quarter than the next leading company did all year.

I also have the same feelings as David, it seems at every turn there is a
group of Mac users (sometimes prompted by greedy lawyers) threatening a
class action suit against Apple.

I have always declined participation in the suits and written letters to the
court for my reasons to decline. I am not without problems with my Mac
systems, I owned a 5300 that the ram never stayed in and the power plug
constantly broke. Today I have one of those ibooks with the POSSIBILITY that
the logic board may go bad, if it happens, it happens and I will address the
issue then without legal action.

In our office, this year alone, 2 Compaqs and one Dell laptop had a series
of hardware problems (one Compaq has been sent back 3 times, returned with
the same problem), our Dell server's hard drive failed, and one Dell
workstation's ram and video card went bad. Even though we have on site
service, we are still waiting, the techs will not come out until WE exhaust
all trouble shooting from our end to determine what the problem is. (These
systems are all under warranty and 6 to 12 months old).

All high tech companies have problems, assembly lines make mistakes,
engineers design flaws and software is full of bugs and security issues,
etc. The one thing we do not see in these threads of a few dissatisfied Mac
users is the multitudes that are happy who have nothing to complain about.

I personally would never use anything but Apple and stand behind them as a
company.

[OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks

2004-01-14 Thread BA
I have several iBooks/Powerbooks that seem to be niggardly with respect
to battery life. However, the opposite seems to be true with the iPods
recently purchased. In fact, I almost need to charge my one iPod daily
as the battery drain is so horrible! Anyone else having similar
experiences? Thanks.

Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks

2004-01-14 Thread Hugo Trottier
I would like to share a little of my experience with iPods; I own 2,
the original 5 Gig and a brand new 20 Gig

The 5 Gig battery lasted for about 18 Months. The new 20 Gig one seems
to be fine (so far)

After reading a whole lot on the subject of iPod battery it seems to me
that:

a) those battery will last for (about) 2 years or anywhere between 200
and 500 charges

b) The best way to go about it is never charge the iPod unless it is
almost dead; Not because of the memory factor, but simply

because the battery Kind of remember how many time it has been
charged, and not the amount of energy left in the Battery.

c) Follow Apple iPod/iTunes up date, that is the best (and maybe) only
way to maintain your iPod Battery in top shape

d) Sure way to know if you need to replace the battery is simply making
the rationale as to: How long does it need to be charge vs how long
will it play Exemple: Charged for 12 hours vs played for 2 hours

e) If you want your Battery to last longer, do the following; Do not
set 1) Sound Check 2) Continuous play 3) Equalizer 4) The Shuffle and
play list functions d) Put the Back light control to the minimum

f) If all else fails go to www.pdasmart.com the will sell you a new
battery for your iPod that (with confidence) you can replace yourself

g) Send it in to PDASmart so they will change it for you (less
expansive service than Apple

h) If you are still under Apple warranty do not hesitate send it in!

i) If you can purchase a Apple Care extended Warranty for your iPod it
will pay for itself

Hope that help you

Kind Regards

Re: [OT] IPods / Unusually poor battery life compared to iBooks/Powerbooks

e) If you want your Battery to last longer, do the following; Do not
set 1) Sound Check 2) Continuous play 3) Equalizer 4) The Shuffle and
play list functions d) Put the Back light control to the minimum
Couple of things to add.

A) Your ipod is always on, even when it doesn't appear to be. That is
one reason that it can be ready to go so quickly when you press a
button. If you have it fully charged, and then leave it sit for 4 or 5
days, you will notice that the battery level has dropped quite a bit.

B) The size of your tracks will greatly influence the amount of battery
life that you have. A track that does not fit fully within the cache of
the ipod is going to hit the drive and thus the battery more. Higher
bitrate MP3s will also cause a faster battery loss due to the processor
needing to work harder to decode them.

I've had my 10GB ipod for a year and have not had any battery issues as
of yet.

There was a article on one of the news shows that went into the issue with
the iPod battery problem, where they only lost around 18 months. Originally
Apple would not replace the battery, and felt the iPod was a disposable
item, but after some creative negative advertising by some film makers, they
now offer battery changing directly from Apple. I have no idea of how much
the service costs though!

2004-01-14 Thread David M. Ensteness
I have to correct some of you statements Tom.

Apple offered the replacement service two weeks before the domain name
ipodsdirtylittlesecret was even registered, that was the domain of
the people who ran the advertising campaign. That site also was
connected to encouraging inflammatory vandalism of Apple ad physical
space such as store signs and billboards.

Nearly six other vendors also offer a similar battery replacement
service. Prices vary from $60-100.

Lithium Ion batteries only last 18-24 months on average use whether it
be a PowerBook battery, iPod battery, or Sony Viao battery, that is
just how the battery works. Some last longer, depends on use,
conditions, all sorts of stuff, some also last shorter.

I find it funny in a very sick way that Apple customers are talking
about suing Apple when every laptop available uses the same technology
and Dell uses the same technology in their music player ... no one is
complaining about those instances ...

I have no issue with Apple (Just back from MacWorld), including the battery
only lasting 18 months or so. The problem I had, was their initial refusal
to replace the iPod battery, looking at it as a $400 disposable item.
