OS 9.1 installed fine on my 7500, too. But not on the 8500. I bought OS 9.1
from Apple directly. It did not come on the machine. It couldn't have. The
7500 and 8500 machines came with 7.5 or so. I've had 9.1 install on the 7500
with a Sonnet Processor installed - on a clean hard drive! I won't tell if
you won't. ;-)
Someone suggested that it could be an LED problem? The little connector on
the board that the LED cable plugs into is bent up slightly. Is this a bad
thing?

Re: 8500 not installing

2002-09-20 Thread David M Kiely

Let me get this straight, Van. You say you can install 8.1, right? But that
9.1 won't do a clean install. What if you were to hack your 8.1 System
Folder with ResEdit (Finder, System and System Resources) and fool the
installer into believing you already had OS 9.0 on board? Worth a try.

Seconded. I set a friend up with a beige G3 that was given to him, and
that's the problem we ran into with 8.1.

9.1 is fine with a 7500, that's what I'm using. More than likely the
9.1 isn't the retail version but a machine specific version. If so
it is designed to only install on a select group of machines,

Actually, I just realized that I posted this thread to the wrong list. Oops.
When I boot up to the 9.1 cd to install the software on a clean hard drive,
the installer script tells me that it doesn't recognize the computer, to
please use the software that came with it. OS 8.1 installs on a clean hard
drive from the installer cd (while booted up to the cd) just fine.
I built this machine from the ground up. It's in a 7500 box to make
installing components easier. I have an 8500 mainboard and A/V module,

interleaved, a 1GB Quantum HD, 4X Matshita CD ROM drive, PM7500 power
supply, and no cards in any of the slots. Just about factory specs, right?
I could install it via network, if I wanted. I just wanna know why OS 9.1
doesn't recognize this computer.

Re: 8500 not installing

2002-09-20 Thread Dan K

7500, 8500, 7600, 8600 and 7300 use a jumper on the power LED connector
to specify which machine it actually is. While I don't know the details
of which pins correspond with which ID, is it possible your 8500's LED
got switched with 7600's LED? Or your power LED is missing or not
connected?

As for your installer troubles, it doesn't matter 7600 vs. 8500 to the
installer as both are supported by both 8.1 and 9.1, but it sounds like
the actual mach(ine) ID isn't set correctly and that is probably your
problem.

Find and DL the control panel "machidwannabe" or "machid wannabe"
(google'll getya), and use it to set your mach id to 069 (8500/8600).
This little bit of fakery works only with the control panel loaded, so
booting from a CD for the install won't work (unless of course the cp is
on the CD.)

This cp works on all Macs running < osX of course, including G3 and G4
PowerBooks! [obligatory on-topic content!]

For more info on _your_ Mac than you ever imagined you'd need, google and
DL "GestLab".

There hasn't been a full install version of a MacOS that required
any prior version of the OS to be installed first or that couldn't
install over any other version (assuming the machine can use the new
OS version). The installer usually requires a minimum OS version to
run on. OS 9.0 installer requires OS 8.5 or 8.6 or better to run but
you can always boot from the OS 9 disk to do it. You can install
directly to OS 9.1 if you have a 9.1 installer.

Ah, nostalgia! Yes, this brings it all back. But wasn't it the case that you
had to update 8.0 to 9.0 before you could install 9.1? Perhaps Mr Turner can
be more specific?

I had an 8100 once and I successfully installed OS 9 on it over OS 8.1
using the OS 9.0.4 CD. You don't have to upgrade to 8.6 before you can
upgrade to OS 9.

Hmm, I seem to have jumped midway into this thread. Do I understand that
you're trying to install 9.1 over 8.1? It's been a long time since I used OS

Apologies for all the numbers but I can't express this any other way :)
