Keith, I know where you are at; I was in this position about a year ago. You can buy on eBay reasonably safely - I did it from overseas even. Learn how to use it. The best feature of eBay is the seller feedback rating, which sellers are very concerned to keep as high as possible. You have ninety days after the purchase to leave feedback for the seller. Most sellers are very happy to please. Also you can get an idea of the current prices by doing an advanced search for completed items; that will let you know if its in your range. There are good Pismos going on eBay regularly. If you are not in a rush, you will find a near new unit. To get some extra life you might also like to upgrade to G4 550 MHz which costs ~ 300. Happy with my Daystar upgrade, even if the fan is running more often. Good luck. I had a delve into the issue of lithium battery life when my G4 550MHz battery went on the blink last autumn. You may find this interesting... http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm Also, there's an applecare article on this, and it contradicts what's been largely agreed on this list and what the above link says: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10970 Recharge Lithium-ion batteries when they become depleted. Although they are not subject to the memory effect, it is suggested that you let the battery drain fully before recharging. Sorry Apple, I think this suggestion is wrong. I remember this was a hot topic about one year ago. The final message came from an engineer on the list. He supported what is on this batteryuniversity.com web page. If your laptop sits on your desk plugged in for most of the time, discharge your battery to _40%_ and stick it in the fridge. For lithium-ion batteries, this is the best way to preserve them when not in use. Interesting. I've heard this before, but in my case, keeping the Ti plugged in most of the time (almost always), I only recently noticed the battery is not staying charged for more than 60-75 minutes. Got the 400 during the middle period of their release so it's been a few years. Partial discharges produce less wear than a full discharge and the capacity loss per cycle is reduced. A periodic full discharge is not required because the lithium-based battery has no memory. A full cycle constitutes a discharge to 3V/cell. When specifying the number of cycles a lithium-based battery can endure, manufacturers commonly use an 80 percent depth of discharge. This method resembles a reasonably accurate field simulation. It also achieves a higher cycle count than doing full discharges. TimH -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Your Mac guru is correct with respect to nimh and nicad batteries but wrong when it comes to LiIon batteries which lose significant life every time they're fully discharged. Every few weeks would is certainly overkill. That said, it can be useful to occasionally calibrate LiIon batteries. The best advice I've seen for maximizing LiIon battery runtime, as posted to usenet by Peter (whose last name escapes me at this moment): -- (Peter's Trickle Calibration) 1. charge fully and then some 2. in terminal, ioreg -p IODeviceTree -n battery -w0 | grep Bat (make a note of your Capacity -- should be around 4000 or more) sudo pmset -b spindown 1 sleep 0 reduce 1 dim 1 (prevents idle-sleep, and after 1 idle minute spins down your disk, reduces your processor speed, and turns off the LCD when on battery) (Maybe in Panther you can do that without pmset, but Jaguar is broken) 3. shut down all applications. turn off airport, disconnect anything external -- keyborad, mouse, printers, and finally, power. 4. LEAVE IT ALONE -- DO NOT TOUCH IT 5. W A I T (5 hours or more ...) 6. eventually your notebook will go to sleep 7. plug it in. wait 3 minutes. (mebbe 5 to be sure :-) 8. ioreg -p IODeviceTree -n battery -w0 | grep Bat (Has it re-evaluated your Capacity?) 9. leave it alone and let it charge fully. 10. if the Capacity changed significantly, you might want to repeat the calibration cycle. 11. Adjust your battery-power management settings to make it sleep at a more reasonable time. Note -- *calibration* means helping the battery's firmware estimate the battery's capacity. -- Obviously, the bits about using terminal to read and set some parameters are not applicable to those using a classic MacOS, but the idea remains the same. The discharge should be as slow as possible. hth, Thanks for this. How about leaving the battery in all the time whilst using the PB plugged in? Does that make any difference? Partial discharges produce less wear than a full discharge and the capacity loss per cycle is reduced. A periodic full discharge is not required because the lithium-based battery has no memory. A full cycle constitutes a discharge to 3V/cell. When specifying the number of cycles a lithium-based battery can endure, manufacturers commonly use an 80 percent depth of discharge. This method resembles a reasonably accurate field simulation. It also achieves a higher cycle count than doing full discharges. The POSSIBLE reason for doing a deep discharge with LiON is to calibrate the battery charging circuitry. After repeated charge discharge cycles it can get confused about the full and discharged voltage for the battery. This can result in the equipment not using the full capacity of the battery. I would only consider deeply discharging it if there was a specific problem. Where available a utility like Apple Battery Reset is a much better approach. Isn't the Apple Battery Reset utility doing this? I bought one about a month ago from OWC (macsales.com). It's a NewerTech 6600mAh battery that is something like 37% more capacity. Re: Buying Replacement Pismo Batteries: Experiences?
Folks: I just bought a battery (6600mAh) for one of our Pismo's from Otherworld. They have 5400mAh and 6600mAh replacement batteries for the Pismo/Lombard which they list as 12.5 and 37.5% higher in capacity than the original Apple battery (doing the math calculates the standard OEM Apple battery at 4800mAh). These sell for $146 and $160 respectively. Otherworld does list a 4500mAh battery but that is for the Wallstreet and is listed as 25% higher in capacity than the original OEM Apple battery (doing the math gives the original as 4000mAh). I checked NewerTech.com and they list the same batteries with the same stats... not sure where on their site Laurent got his 3750mAh figure from. We haven't had the 6600mAh long enough to see if it is worth the price but I'll get back to the list once we've had a chance to try it. As far as I'm concerned, if it really does pack 37.5% more power into the same size package, it is well worth the additional cost (although no one listed the price of the batteries from laptops-batteries.com and I can't even find a Pismo compatible battery there (Apple's orginal part# for Lombard and Pimo batteries are M7385G/A and M7318 respectively) so if they are really cheap I guess they could possibly be a better value). ... Hi folks, For what it's worth, I too recently purchased a NewerTech 6600mAh battery for my Pismo from Other World Computing. I haven't had it long enough to check the actual working time on a charge, but the Battery Status Indicator shows 4:06 at 99% capacity (it showed 4:57 at 100% capacity when I first unplugged the power adapter and seems to be all over the place, especially after a short period of inactivity or a sleep period.) Re: Buying Replacement Pismo Batteries: Experiences?
My Mac guru advises that it is wise not to keep a PB plugged in all the time but instead let the battery run down fully at least every few weeks, that doing so will actually enhance the life span of the battery. He seems to be correct, as with every PB I have owned I have had spare batteries for the other bay which get little use and they always die long before the main battery which I let wear down periodically.
