4X has been confirmed to work using a UJ-845.

My 2X confirmation was using a DVR-K05.

I have no reason to doubt that the DVR-K05 will do 4X as well.

The 2X write test with the Pioneer DVR-K05 and the Pismo worked perfectly.

2X write was explicitly selected, overriding "best" write rate, although
it appeared that the actual writing took less than one-half of the entire
program's length. The test source was a movie which took the entire
single-layer media.

I noticed that even though the drives are rated 2.4X for dual-layer
media, Roxio products use 2X.

Or, perhaps that is a characteristic of those products ... displaying 2X
even though 2.4X was used.

Since dual-layer media is costing about $3.25 per unit, and single-layer
media is costing about $0.25 per unit, I'll likely defer dual-layer
internal testing for a later time.

For now, I am pleased with 2X internal EIDE/UATA write and 8X external
Firewire write.

I believe reading and verification was done at "best" speed, but I have
not confirmed that beyond reasonable doubt.

I did not test that. Perhaps I will, later.

I'm a stickler for stability, and I detest "coasters".

If I could consistently get good DVD burns at 2X, using a Pioneer DVR-K05
or Panasonic UJ-845 in the Lombard and Pismo, then I would be satisfied
for "run and gun" DVD burning, on an occasional basis, with a fallback to
USB or Firewire, for stationary use, at the fastest possible speed,
depending upon what the rate limiting factor was, interface or drive.

I guess I'll buy a USB + Firewire case this coming week, that way it will
be usable on either the Lombard (USB only) or the Pismo (USB and/or
Firewire).

I am very pleased with the results with the Pioneer DVR-109 (now replaced
by the DVR-110), the Pioneer DVR-K05, and the Panasonic UJ-845, when used
in my B&W G3/450.

I am also very pleased with the results of the Pioneer DVR-109 in my old
Firewire-only case.

I trust the DVR-109 or DVR-110 will work as well in the new USB +
Firewire case.

That way, I'll be pleased pretty much all around.

Actually the Pismo will burn DVDs okay, just at slower speeds.
Depends on your setup, portability needs, etc. External firewire will
always be much better, faster, stabler, etc. As I mentioned, I used a
Panasonic UJ-811B in my Pismo and it burned movies to DVD-R's okay.
Was able to read those movies on the same drive and on a home DVD
player. I used DVD Backup and DVD2oneX to prepare the source video file.
The Panasonic drives have the advantage of being tray-loaders that
can use the original Panasonic DVD-Rom drive bezel from the Pismo
(not the LG one). The series includes UJ-810, UJ-811 and UJ-820, if I
remember correctly. The burning speeds increase as the model number
goes up, with the 820 at 4x.
