There are other companies that perform this upgrade?
What are the advantages between the G3 upgrades over the G4 upgrades?
I looked around a bit and found a couple of companies that are doing
this...

A G4 basically provides you with Altivec, which certain applications require
or will perform a lot better if you have it. However, in term of raw
performance, there isn't a lot of difference between a 500MHz G3 and a
500MHz G4, certainly not enough to justify the price of the upgrade...

dinosaur n.: 1. Any hardware requiring raised flooring and special power.
Used especially of old minis and mainframes, in contrast with newer
microprocessor-based machines. In a famous quote from the 1988 Unix EXPO,
Bill Joy compared the liquid-cooled mainframe in the massive IBM display
with a grazing dinosaur with a truck outside pumping its bodily fluids
through it. IBM was not amused. Compare big iron; see also mainframe. 2.
[IBM] A very conservative user; a zipperhead.

Christmas is around the corner and i'm thinking about getting it
myself. I just want some input from people about their experiences
with the upgrade. So many people are telling me how much better their
Pismo is in terms of rigidity and usefulness so I'm thinking about
extending my computer's service another three years. :-P

Here's a link for a great review of the G4 550 upgrade for the Pismo by
Daystar written by Charles Moore:

PS he loved it!
Here's a whole page of other links on the Pismo. Most were of interest
to me as a new owner of a Pismo. Hope this helps answer your questions.

Re: G4 500mhz upgrade for Pismo

2004-11-02 Thread Clive Webber
I bought the 550MHz G4 upgrade from FastMac a little over a year ago
and can thoroughly recommend both the upgrade and the company. Total
turnaround was 9 days including shipping to and from the UK. The Pismo
booted up first time once the card was installed, the new spec
correctly identified in System Profiler with no software patches to
install and no compatibility problems with any software, either Apple
or 3rd party. The machine is rock solid, runs no hotter than before and
battery life is also unaffected. Combined with 1Gb RAM, OS X runs
beautifully, movie playback is smoother , apps open quicker, iTunes
ripping is greatly improved... all in all, a worthwhile exercise.
FastMac's service was also excellent, keeping me informed of progress
and delivering within the promised time. Only one very minor point to
note: The processor card came back without the little plastic pull tab
stuck on the back. I had a spare from another card so this wasn't a
problem (and it wouldn't be too much trouble to make a new one) but you
might want to remove it yourself before sending the card as it does
make subsequent removal much easier.
The Pismo remains my favorite PowerBook and this upgrade is an
excellent way to extend its useful life for several more years. Go
ahead an give yourself that Christmas present!

G4 500mhz upgrade for Pismo

Mark,
I got the 550MHz upgrade from Daystar Technology. I honestly haven't
used the machine enough to give a thorough evaluation (I gave the
machine to my parents), but there were no problems. Also, their
service and communication were very good.

The FastMac service is $40 cheaper but you have to take out the
processor board yourself and send it to them. Also, their turnaround
time is much slower; I used Daystar because I was in a hurry. I am
going to upgrade my own machine shortly and I will not be in a hurry
so I will try FastMac to save the $40.

I have seen only good feedback on both FastMac and Daystar.
