In spite of my "encouragements" to my wife to keep drinks away from her
laptop, she has had three or four spills onto her keyboard. It's been
different things--sweet tea (iced tea) pepsi, and hot tea. Each time, she
shut off her computer immediately, and I was forced to take her keyboard
apart. Once was on her Duo, and twice on her PB 1400 (It has a g3 card so it
belongs on this list) :-) Anyway, the Duo was a simple fix, because the
keyboard is so cheaply built. :-) The 1400 surprised me, however. It appears
that the keyboard in that thing can trap a fair amount of liquid, and not
let any of it escape onto the mobo below, or drip into the actual actuators
inside. It is a marvel of engineering. I was quite surprised at how well it
holds liquid. The last time I had it out, I purposely poured clean water on
it to see how much it would hold, and it was quite a lot. The problem is
getting the liquid out without spilling it! I used kleenex and Q-tips to get
the liquid out, and it seems to work well. I wonder if other, newer models
have these little "dams" built into them? If that's the case, then turning
off the laptop very quickly and not moving it would be the best thing to
do...

We've lost both an Acer laptop and a WallStreet over the last two years
due to soft drink spills. I've also salvaged every single external
keyboard that someone has spilled on by unplugging it, rinsing it under
water, and letting it dry overnight. No such luck with laptops, though.

Good advice. Ditto for getting crumbs from your cookies inside the
keyboard.

Re: G4 spill damage

2002-11-22 Thread Paul Nicholson
Hi,

You could have saved it. It's not the beer by itself that caused the problem.
Destruction is caused by the application of an electrolyte (beer in this case) and
voltage, which causes electrolysis, as in electroplating. Metals in the conductors are
removed and plated onto other conductors depending on voltage polarity. Metallic salts
are formed and these combine with the sugary residue of the beer to leave a partially
conductive sticky mess.

What you should have done was to immediately pull the power cord and battery before
significant electrolysis occurred. Then disassemble the computer, remove the circuit
boards and wash off all the beer with clean water. It's OK to wash the keyboard, and
hard disk too.

Now you want to make absolutely sure that everything is dry before you reassemble and
apply power. You can rinse with alcohol, which will wash off the water and evaporate
quickly. Sling the boards with your arm to use centrifugal force to force out water -
it hides under surface mount chips. Use a hair dryer, or put your boards in the sun.
The keyboard has several layers of plastic sheet printed with conductors and it takes
a long time to dry. Do NOT in any case apply power until everything is thoroughly dry,
just a drop of moisture across a couple of conductors at different polarity can cause
failure.

My bookkeeper recently had coffee spilled on his Dell laptop. Fortunately, I was his
next stop and he shut it down quickly. His IBM hard drive and keyboard were wet, and
after a wash and dry, everything worked.

not really. you're just luckier than he was. i've seen about as much
water dumped into an iBook, requiring almost the entire computer be
replaced.

$600 is a fairly decent price for such a part. I've seen it more
expensive. Much more expensive.

Pbparts.com lists the part at $699...

for cheaper, you may want to look on ebay for a 550 that's nonfunct
that can be parted out, or some such.

G4 spill damage

2002-11-21 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Hi Listers,

Well, while ripping my bartender's CDs to my Powerbook 550 I spilled some
beer on the keyboard. Tekserve has cleaned it up and says the logic board
must be replaced to the tune of over $600. Wow, expensive beer. Tekserve has
been very helpful, but I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with this
sort of thing (logic board replacement, not beer spillage) and has advice;
such as finding cheaper parts, etc.

Thanks much,
